As your login splash screen may have already told you, an optional viewer upgrade is available today. Announcing the Second Life 1.21 Viewer!

As many scripters are aware, this 1.21 viewer brings you the ability to compile scripts using Mono. This viewer is also a maintenance release: There are over 150 fixes that solve bugs from previous versions of Second Life. Many of these are small improvements that make existing features work more smoothly (like menus, Inventory offers, IM and Chat, Snapshots, Estate tools, and many more).

There is so much to list, please check out the Full release notes. There is a lot worth reading:
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/1.21

Please visit the Downloads page to download the 1.21.6 viewer:
http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php
... or simply click when your older viewer suggests you to upgrade to the new version.

Note: This viewer upgrade is OPTIONAL. You may still log in to Second Life with your current viewer 1.20.17.

Please of course continue to report new issues in the Issue Tracker and set the "Affects Version/s" to "1.21". We can only investigate and solve issues that are reported in the Issue Tracker.

TY, Ramzi.

What are you guys up to next? A thread, or follow-up to this one, on the big-bullet items planned for 1.22 would be cool..

Good suggestion Meade, I will do that. We are still gearing up for a 1.22 Release Candidate. Give me a couple days into next week and I will post some highlights of what is coming.

Funny thing I noticed about my 1.21.xx lag spikes... Since .6 is a release, I decided to bear with it for most of the day. I found as time passed my frame rate would get better and better. It may be that the caching of textures may be introducing an increased processor load? I dunno. I'm still seeing epic lag spikes within 10 - 30 seconds after teleporting and slow loading textures. (>_<;)

Though... After spending about an hour in a single region, things improve to a much more usable state. I just wish I had the same performance from beginning to end. I've already updated some Jiras on frame rate. (^_^)y

1000m Map Cap unfixed in RELEASE?
10-17-2008 09:30
Not to be a pest... but why wasn't http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7331 this fixed before release?

This is a major major problem for everyone trying to use SL above 1000m now that the build hight is 4096m.

Error opening new viewer
10-17-2008 09:34
I have attempted 4 times to install the updated viewer and before install is totally finished I get an error message:

Error Opening File for Writing C:\Program File\secondlife\wrap_oal.dll

Attempted to download on back up computer, received same thing, and again on my business computer, same thing....

Received a call from my mother and she is having the same issue.

Filed a ticket however, knowing I NEVER get any response to them posted here in hopes of help, ideas, answers... Maybe a way to download the old view till this 'glitch' is repaired.

(I have tried the 'work around' listed in the release notes however it still fails to install)

Erik- could you add your vote or any more information to VWR-8818 ?
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8818

Our testing thoroughly tried to narrow down this issue, and we were never able to see the terrible delay problem that a few residents had. This means this is a particularly subtle or tricky bug, and we need more information from everyone to help us solve it.

Hi- wow that is VERY unusual- we have not seen this particular bug before. Certainly not one where rebooting your computer would not work. I can assume all of you machines are Windows (Vista?).

In the meantime, you asked for a way to download 1.20.17 again, you can find that here (this list is not maintained by Linden Lab):

Oh dear.

Just downloaded the new viewer and seem to have an odd problem (not sure if it's me or not?) as my graphics setting were re-set but seems very odd.

I have round hollow objects (call them cylinders if you will)

One is 9m dia, and a shorter 9.1m dia one.

The larger one is over the top of the smaller one (like a ring on a finger)

Now, when I move away, I can see bits from smaller one poking thru the larger one.
Actually I can fly back towards the item and they still show thru (and they never did before, even at maximum viewable distance)

I even tried installing the previous version of SL (the one before todays one) and it's still like this, and it had never showed thru like this before.

Any ideas why a 9.0m object should al of a sudden (in places around the dia) be showing thru a 9.1m one (which is around it like a ring)

I have the same problem and more. I would give good money for the old one back. It sure worked better than this 'fix'.

Dont suppose the group search has been put back to the way it was? If we want the new group search its on the main tab via a dropdown, what was the point of duplicating it over to the group tag thereby making it nigh on impossible to find groups by size any more.

And what about an option to turn off the clouds back to solid avs yet?

No? Ok ill stick with the old insecure one then- it simply has more functionality than all this 'like it or lump it' new rubbish thats foisted on us, with no options to choose for ourselves.

I've found out the issue with my ring showing thru another dia.
It's the rotation of the two items.

Now normally, (as a circle) is made or straight sections, if the flats of the circle are not aligned you can end up with the points of the circle? poking thru.

But you can adjust them to make the flats aligned and all is fine.

That's how I had it. But with this release, even though the flats (of the circle) were dead on, the actual rotation of the whole item was not the same

when you zoom away, this makes bits poke out from the smaller layer, as if they are not rotationally (flats lined up) correct. Even though the flats are lined up, but just the whole item is not in the same orientation as the other one.

If you can undertand what I mean.

Seems odd this should have been fine before todays release

Oh no no no.........

Something is definatly screwed here.

I also saw some (what looked like) cylinder flats misalignment on some other items I made and they were all the same orientation.

So I made a quick new test item.

Two new cyliners, 3mx3mx3m in size, one stacked on top of the other, and all exactly that same in all orientaions.

From some angles and distances it looks just as if they are not aligned.

Photo of the effect here:

Yet, they are 100% spot on, and if you look closer, this misalignment effect goes away.

This is what I was seeing in my 1st posting.

And, remember, I have re-installed the earlier version and it's STILL screwed like this.

Ok, I've just about lost all my politeness regarding the VWR-7331 issue for llMapDestination being capped to 1000m.

We have even fixed the bug for you and created a patch file. It's 1 fracking line of code for christ sake.

Would you like us to redo the .patch file on a big A1 size piece of paper using crayons? That's the kind of mentality that you guys seem to have with this problem.

Get it sorted please. It won't take you 5 seconds to fix it and given the amount of time that has passed since this was originally reported it's really starting to go beyond taking the piss.

I'm extremely unhappy about LL stripping the viewer of existing, well running and useful features, especially when residents payed a substantial amount of money to buy hardware to use this feature.

I thought developing software further was about improving it, making it more usable and comfortable - and *not* about taking away existing useful features.

New viewer
10-17-2008 12:13
I had no problem with the previous viewer. With the new one, every time I do something, e.g. sit down, I get flung into the dark. In spite of information to the contrary I was not allowed to revert to the previous viewer. What can I do now?
