How does a thread like this provide anything positive or constructive for SL?

Answer: It doesn't.

It occurred to me the other day that Linden Lab probably doesn't want to kill forum drama. At all.

I was sitting in at a strategy meeting with a couple of my old bosses. I'd helped them about six months earlier with the Terms of Use and moderation guidelines for the discussion forum they'd just launched at the higher-ed company they work for. The forum allows about 5000 people, students and staff, to communicate in ways that the school's grueling schedule didn't usually allow for.

Basically, the good news they had to share was that their traffic numbers were excellent and steadily climbing. Their favorite feature of the boards, they said, were the heated discussions that arose out of hot-button issues. Occasionally, they said, people got out of line and that had to be cleaned up. But mostly, the "drama" (my boss's word) was great for the traffic of the site and kept people chatting.

I'm sure it's the same here, and I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. Surely they don't want people smearing their feces everywhere, but Linden Lab is probably pretty satisfied with the passionate and often fevered discourse here on the boards. The moment that stops, LL loses a dramatically valuable pulse-taker for their world.

Mm, perhaps not. Though I would venture that it's about as constructive as the threatened, sanctimonious "Forum Reform" thread is going to be.

Speculation. And, if true, aren't you just sinking to the same low level?

Remove yourself from this thread. This whole thread is a clear violation of naming names and singles out Cocoanut for the purpose of ridicule. That's not productive.

All that has been named in the original post is that Cocoanut is going to finally make her long-threatened Forum Reform post. She has been going on about it for a month. It's been built up with such ferocity it's almost a public event. She has admitted that it is true in this very thread that she is going to make the post. Thus, the thread is about an event, which happens to be sponsored by a person. If you're saying that her forum reform ideas are worth ridicule, maybe you should wait until you've actually read them. Maybe they'll be worth it after, huh? Let's not jump to uncharitable conclusions here.

Issuing orders now are we?

I guess I missed the memo, the one which explained how Hiro was hired by LL to be the next moderator.

If Hiro removed his name, then he would never have said that in the first place!

If we ALL removed our names, this conversation never would have happened!

If I didn't have so much to drink last night, I wouldn't be babbling like an eejit now!

CHEESE I SAY!

I think that the thick sarcasm in the original post is fairly clear about intent.

If you feel that spamming of the forum has occured, I urge you to report abuse on threads that are duplicates. I also urge you to ignore them - responding gives more publicity.

However, being a forum regular, and not even having heard of this "forum reform post", I think things are a bit exagerated.

Agreed and well said Hiro.

Yes. Yes indeed. Catherine certainly wouldn't approve of a thread started about a specific person. I can completely understand why she would agree.

I made the first comment about the inappropriate nature of the thread, not her. Please don't use ad hominem to try and red herring the discussion.

Nay, nay, lad, nothing of the sort. You made the remark that a thread about a specific person was bad, she agreed with the remark and I happened to point out the hypocrisy of such agreement.

I don't NEED Catherine Cotton to prove my point. Dismissing her does nothing. You're spinning your wheels.

I'd like to sign up for the shot in the head, too. It looks like after a period of relative calm, the forums will dissolve into being crapflings again. :(

Who says it mattered to me what your point was? I'm just delighted to observe hypocrisy. Eyes on the prize, man. Don't let yourself be distracted by little ol' me.
