and they are?

group think is the least problem.
From: someone
really now...I answered your questiona and thats your responce?
actually you haven't read anything there have you? If you join to post serious comments and are genuine in your responces how would that be a bad thing?

group membership is an odd threshhold for measuring the validity of an opinion.
From: someone
No ..I'm countering lies and crap from people that have no clue but just want to bash the project...you can have all the opinions you want...if you want your opinions to mean something and count in the project then join...otherwise your opinions aren't doing much are they?

what my opinions achieve is satisfactory to me.
From: someone
Thats just bullshit and you know it...have you been silenced? Again if you want to have a voice in the project then join ...if not don't tell me your opinion should matter.

it's not bullshit. you don't want certain opinions. that's silencing people. you justify your silencing based on group membership. however, how unhappy will you be if people simply joing the group to post? will you then complain about the validity of their membership?
From: someone
The appropriate place is where you aren't interfearing with a group just because you want to. Post in any forum you like. You can even post in our group forum but unless you are a member you won't be allowed to post to any threads where decisions, policy, and or debate about our project is ongoing because you aren't a member and you shouldn't have a say in our groups activities unless you are.

it's true you can do as you please, but keep in mind, it is an interesting commentary about your government.

keep in mind, i'm really trying to convince you to do any particular thing - beyond thinking through what you are actually doing. what you do has a net effect.

that net effect speaks more to your actual principles than your stated principles.

Stoneself,

I am pretty sure group-think is something they are trying to encourage. They have lots of very intricate, fascinating, genuinely brilliant if completely unwise things they are doing.

Yes. Like actually considering your proposals in the Avatar's Bill of Rights thread were decent.

Don't worry, Pendari. Wisdom is sometimes overrated.

Stone, we can accept outside opinions, though they are better placed not within threads where we are seriously trying to hash out details. If someone comes to our group forum and places a new thread that has some opinions in it, as long as there is no personal attacking, I doubt seriously we would feel the need to delete the thread. What is acceptable for outsiders to post in our group forum is something we are discussing. Another appropriate place to discuss issues with us in within any of the other public forums within valid categories. But I'm sorry, even if we haven't decided yet it is the action we want to take, we do reserve the right to delete posts in our group forum that are counter productive. I didn't say critical, but I think by now you should understand what types of posts we mean.

And yes, we are working on a propsal for qualifications for citizenship. However they are more along the lines of anyone can join but lets have these simple requirements. They are not going to be so harsh as to really keep anyone out. But within the laws we are making and such, there could be a chance someone could lose a government position etc. Again, these would be in keeping with the laws we pass. A judicial system will be in place as well.

accepting opinions and shutting out opinions are difficult issues.

deleting posts, limiting who can post, they do shut people out and silence people.

in all societies the freedom to express oneself and the needs for order need to be balanced.

it is the process of balance that comes to focus.

beyond describing how you define who is inside the group and what their rights are. the projekt should address who is not inside the group and what their rights are.

the rights of the individual are balanced against that of the state. and the individual can be inside or outside the state.

a society isn't just measured on how it treats its members, but also how it treats its outlanders. in the end insiders and outsiders are people, and addressing that fundamental personhood is important in how a state addresses itself.

group think is the least problem.

well I see you addressed my question.

From: someone
group membership is an odd threshhold for measuring the validity of an opinion.

Why should we take your opinion seriously in a policy debate if you have nothing at stake?

From: someone
what my opinions achieve is satisfactory to me.

Obviously and they might be to me and others too...one never knows.

From: someone
it's not bullshit. you don't want certain opinions. that's silencing people. you justify your silencing based on group membership. however, how unhappy will you be if people simply joing the group to post? will you then complain about the validity of their membership?

Please tell me what opinions I stated I don't want? We have silenced no one with group membership...join and have a say in how things work...don't join and you have no say. If people join and post serious questions and have serious insight ...no I won't complain. If they join just to bash and and subvert what we are doing ...then yes I will complain.

From: someone
it's true you can do as you please, but keep in mind, it is an interesting commentary about your government.

Yes...it says we care about what we're doing ...enough to take all this bashing and still be involved.

From: someone
keep in mind, i'm really trying to convince you to do any particular thing - beyond thinking through what you are actually doing. what you do has a net effect.

Yes and thats the experiment...we don't know what effect we will have .
that net effect speaks more to your actual principles than your stated principles.
My actual and stated principles are the same.

So now I have a question for you. Seeing as we are a group and you think you should be able to participate in the group without being a member...DO you believe you can walk into the United States Senate at any time and debate bills with the senators?

Cat,

Maybe we can all keep the offensive language to a minimum .. and I think we all have a right to our ideas, as long as we present them politely.

Ok guys I am going to break one of my own rules about bringing rl into sl here. I will try to brief and to the point.

One thing that disturbs me about all this is Ulrika's recent statements on Haneys blog. In particular her personal views as listed here:

http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/2004/11/red_staters_mee_4.html

Its one thing to stand back and judge one countries politics, its another to beable to see it from the inside.

I take some of those remarks personaly. I lived in fear for 4 long years when I lived in the middle east 1997-2001 I was living very close to Yemen when the USS Cole was bombed. I lived threw arabs spitting on me becuase I was American. I lived threw a sniper trying to kill me and my family. In Khamis Mushayt, Saudi Arabia. Feel free to look it up on the news wires. It happened. This all occured before 9-11-01 What was my crime? I was an American woman. I arrived back in the US on 9-6-01. On a flight from the middle east.

So when your standing on the side lines spouting your political bullshit keep in mind that at least one SL resident lived threw a hell of a lot more than you can imagine.

There are middle eastern groups that believe if they kill Americans, Ali will grant into the kingdom of heaven and give them 100 virgins.

Unless you have been in the shit, you have no right to stand on the side lines and spout the bullshit you do.

Now here is the kicker, for the first time in 18 years I will be spending Christmas alone, because my husband is in Uzbekistan. As a US civilian doing a job that few can do to support our troops over in the middle east. Why can't I be there? Its too dangerous.

I can imagine now you know my views.

Cat

Boo Hoo .. you have no idea what any one of us have been through dear so stop being so self rightous. To be even more exact this has absolutely nothing to do with our project ...this isn't real life.

Yes Catherine. I think a lot of people know where Ulrika stands on RL political issues. Her and I are about polar opposites almost. hehe.. I'm not the only one in the project that has very different RL political views than her either. But, the diversity in the group is what really brings about some great thoughts and ideas. Our focus is on issues within our SL world. However, the city will be an event area as well and we will not squelch free speech. Any events that focus on RL issues will be at the hands of the host that is putting on the event. It does not mean that every event that happens bears the opinion of Neaultenburg citizens as a whole.

Of the 3 Governmental Branches we have:
1) Leftist meritocracy
2) Rightist Randian corporatism
3) Constitutional moderate democracy

So a lot of different viewpoints are getting out in the project.

And of course this project is about an online community. It goes beyond just us making a government also. We are basically working on a fully functioning city. The government is just one aspect of the entire project. Granted the hardest one, but still only one part of it.

We are not always going to agree on everything. I could hate my neighbor, but if he is a citizen then that is what he is. It is just on a smaller scale but is no different really than the community at large.

You should've removed it, as it seemed to have little, if any, relevance to Nuealtenburg and this discussion.

I could be wrong though. ;)

Sigh.

There is so much love in the air, I can just feel it.

You know, SL being a microcosm of real society, I wonder sometimes that the world hasn't blown itself up.

BTW - this is referring to everyone, me included. No one take this personally.

hehe.. If I started walking through the city with Pen for President signs in my hand, I imagine I'd get chased with a pitchfork! :p

Seriously though. One thing most don't realize about our government is that no one person will have all the power. The three branches will work together, each with their specific policies and areas of focus, but with checks and balances in place to make sure that no one branch ever has more power than another.

For instance, I am very much interested and hopeful to be elected to The Representative Assembly:

From: someone

The Representative Assembly (RA) is a body of democratically
elected factions which represent different ideological views
of its citizens. Its governmental role is to pass laws and
its service role is to promote the city and perform long-term
planning.

I would like to be in this assembly because I feel I would do well with its main roles. However, if I am elected to this Assembly, for as long as I am in office, then I could not move into a Meister position in The Artisanal Branch. The reason being is that it would give too much power to one person.

So we have been working very hard to put checks and balances into place. And once our government "goes live", there will be no one leader. And it is my hope that we can help make this understood about our government and ultimately our project. As I do believe it would help with some concerns. :)

Thats a very interesting idea for govt Pen, sounds very involved. Although I must admit I am now more curious than ever.
