From: Madame Maracas While we're making confessions...Nala Galatea told me how cool SL was in a non-judgemental way, I listened and ignored it! For months! I was happy.
Then Nala went MIA. I joined SL to look for my buddy. Different name here than THERE. Couldn't find Nala. I went to night every time I got into SL. Hated my avie. Kept lagging into building walls that wouldnt' rezz (I know now). Hated it. Hated it.
Months went by.
There did dumb things that scared many folks. The economy changed. Event support went away. I went looking for a possible alternative, incase There kacked.
I looked at Moove, AW, and WTF else I dont' remember (it was a bunch of us, we split up in teams, real methodical). Came back to SL. Grudgingly. Found out how to turn the FRICKIN' sun on. Got some help w/clothes and avies. Started to dig it.
Found Nala (well made Nala find me).
Was really happy here in SL.
Until today.
My guilt is overburdening me.
/stands up, shuffling nervously.
"I, Madame Maracas, was once Asandra in There. I love it here. But I miss spades, buggies and voice chat. Esp. Buggy bombing Duda Beach. But I didn't say that."
/sits down, sobbing uncontrollably with relief
/skulks out of the room to go build a house that de rezzes when folks teleport away while seated
(if you remember, you know why that's really REALLY funny) Thats how it all started. I left There during Black Friday and hate myself for it. I look at how far they have come and the friends I left behind but can't bring myself to join again. Because I know i'd never be able to face people in There again. I still refer people to There because I love it. I will never forget There and the things I did in There. I am still very passionate about There but can't show it. Well i'm sick of the There sucks comments and such. Why can't we live in peace. Why don't our two worlds just be friends and we exchange ideas and opinions. But people make it seem like There is the enemy when its not. We make ourselves look foolish.

Oh right and the nay sayers then were SURE There would close in 90 days (really poorly worded memo) and that would have meant THERE would have RIP'd itself on JUNE 21st 2004.
They made it through that Zack, did you "live" through that section of Thereian history? Or when LeviJones left/was let go and everyone was sure that was the end?
Bwak bwak the sky IS falling! oh, it's just particle chickens!

I see, the problem is that you're hanging out with folks that find value in picking on There? That's the height of their creative discourse? Dude, you need to mute/ignore those that are being all negative. I can go weeks w/out talking about There, and really I don't have much to say negative, other than that stupidly worded memo has got to stand out there with Reagan's "begin bombing" gaffe for foot in mouth moments in history.
And that's about what's his face, not There.
Wasting time on your guilt and the folks you spend time with and THEIR negativity is skewing yer focus.
Look around, there's so many other things to get dramatic about in the forums that AbsoLutely 100% ignore There's existence. Promise!

Sigh.

From: Zack Cline No, you don't get my point. People try and sell Second Life in There after you all know they have no intrest in Second Life. And when you get a newbie to try Second Life out once in a while you are destroying There. You are taking money away from them.
You are forcing them to die and decay... Ok... overkill much? Everyone hate obnoxious "recruiters". If the people who go to There to pimp SL are so annoying, they'll just get eventualy shunned and ignored. No worries. As a There supporter, you should only begin to "worry" if the people who come and try SL from There actually decide to stay in SL. Because, if after having a taste of SL they do decide that SL is better out of their own will and accord... that may point out that something is missing in There. No one is stealing anything. People raving about a system or acting obnoxious on behalf of something they love is pretty common on the net. But I can assure you that non of this is a "concpiracy" or designed by a group. SecondLife is not a religion. We dont send priests out to convert the indians. They come to us. If you want my personal point of view: The problem with There today is that its stuck. Its a zombie platform. Its not evolving. The tech is static. Other then afew patchs and a little in-house content every now and then, There is pretty much the same as it was last year. This is partialy due to the nature of There: It was originaly designed as a top-down enviroment. "We build the world for you. You come and pay to play." This was all nice and dadny in theory - but it never really went too far. There realised too late that users are the best source for content - not the company. Too late, because the system was not geared to handle this very well - infact it still isnt. ThereScript rocks... except, its not open for the users to develop with. There's the ability to submit textures, and objects... which, unfortunatly, have nothing to do with the more advance aspects of making sure the DDS version works as intended in world or letting you mess with the collision mesh. Fact is, There is not user-content oriented. And thats its main point of failure. Ofcourse, thats not really a bad thing, if your user community isnt big on content creation. There is about consumers, with some customisation. SL is about developers. Perhaps the people who decided to migrate from There to SL just found out that they prefer to develop rather then consume. Finally, Afew intresting points to concider: A whole batch of Ex-There developers (I am talking in-house) have moved from There.Inc to work at LindenLab. This includes some techs, engineers, and helpers. Infact, one of the recent "There.Inc imports" happens to be the guy who did work on the pet A.I. (Hi Jeff!) Why did they move? All I can say is that I dont think it has much to do with having a better pay. "We" are not forcing There to die and decay. I'm afraid There has been doing it themselves, starting with letting their Marketing department dictate the company aims... continued with letting each of its departments have its own vision for the company... and concluding with the final axing of its in-house software and in-world content development team, which was what really made There, There. Think about it.

The funny thing is There did die in 90 days. It didn't close, but it died a slow death. The current there is just a living dead version of the past There. There has never recovered from that memo, and probably never will. They lowered rents on houses and still, they can't rent them, and some of the houses, Tyr comes to mind, you can't even give away.
There members are constantly making threads about SL, and no I am not talking about member of There that are mainly here, but members of There that LOVE There. They obsessed with SL and the large vibrant community SL has. They can't figure out why people love SL over There "OMG it must be the SEX, the DIRTY DIRTY SEX". So when members of There stop making threads obsessing about SL and the economy here, people will stop responding.

From: Zack Cline The vision of There is truely one of a kind. There was developed by some of the greatest minds in the gaming world. I'm proud to say I was once a member of There. I also feel disapointed that I left There. If you are disapointed that you left There, why haven't you gotten back into it in some form?

From: Kris Ritter By the way, I'd like to take this opportunity to make a true confession. I feel I need to unburden myself of this awful secret after Zacks words rang so true with me. I'll make a confession, too, if you promise not to think badly of me. I talked about SL at work and caused Lecktor Hannibal to join.
