Hi Chip I was wondering if you or anyone had a shadeing templete yet? I know there was some talk of someone making one for wrinkles on shirts, skirts and pants. If so can you tell me how to get them?

I don't know of any templates for wrinkles, but there are definitely some good wrinkle tutorials out there. Your best bet is to search for those and to study photos of clothing being worn so you can see what you're trying to replicate and where they should be. Then just experiment with painting them and figuring out how to position them on the templates.

Here's an excellent how-to post from Robin: /109/25/77501/1.html#post808672

for basic stretch wrinkles look in the Second life files and you will find the tga file used for default clothing there, its not great but it can be used as a guide. Also if you look at alot of clothing images you will get a good idea of the direction and depth of the wrinkles made on typical clothing. In photoshop you can use "dodge" (lighten) and "burn";(darken) as well. There are some threads here somewhere that give a better explination also on the shading and develovment of wrinkles and streched fabric.

Like to say great templates they are amazing. I can create shirts long and short sleeve no problem however i'm having trouble getting skirts to line up in photoshop they are within the bleed areas but when going to SL and uploading the preview shows half the rear end covered and half the front covered. Is there something i'm not doing right, i have tried stretching the image past the bleed lines but that doesnt help at all. Any suggestions? This the template i am using CMFF-Master_Template-Skirt.
Thanks

Drah, can you post a small version of one of your skirt textures (maybe as just a 64x64 or so)? Without seeing what you're doing it's hard to make a guess as to what might be going wrong.

using DAZ or Poser content
10-30-2007 10:36
I see loads of threads about using these tools for animations obviously but what about textures? It seems as though you could easily get high quality textures to import into photoshop and then tweak to fit templates...or am i totally offbase here? does that infringe somehow on their copyrights? aren't the packs on like content paradise sold as stock, for creating your own content with? I am curious if anyone will admit to using these for SL....
please respond! :D inquiring minds must know.

The templates in this thread are used as guides for creating avatar textures. They don't have anything to do with animations. Textures that are sold by third parties such as in texture library CDs will all have their own license agreements. Most generally allow you to use them as part of commercial works but do not allow you to resell them as raw textures. I'm sure there are many people who use them in SL, but what that has to do with avatar templates I'm not quite sure. :)

read the title

I don't think you read my title. I am asking if Daz or Poser content can be used as a basis for things like skin texture.

The UV mapping used on Poser figures if very different than that used on the SL avatar, so in general, no. While you could do a great deal of Photoshop work to make it work with SL it would be easier just to make your own skin from scratch, and if you sold a skin in SL that was made from a purchased Poser skin you would definitely be violating the copyrights of the original artist. If you just made it for your own personal use that would be okay (you'd have to check the license agreement) but it really wouldn't be worth the trouble. If you have the skills to convert a Poser skin to an SL skin then you have the skills to make your own to begin with.

Wrinkles and shading...
11-08-2007 18:20
I just use photshop for these and of course the marvellous templates that Chip has kindly provided for us all.

What I do is copy the clothing layer that I've just created and do my shading etc on that. That way I can adjust the opacity to however I want it to look without changing the actual clothing texture....

I use the burn tool, set quite small and to about 35% strength, draw some lines with the burn tool across the fabric while at the same time holding the shift key, that keeps them straight. Then I use my dodge tool to create highlights above the lines. Then I just sweep my smudge tool across to make them a bit more realistic. If I have time later I'll make it a bit clearer, numbered list etc etc.....

I find that the shading and wrinkles just take a bit of practice and If I can do it then believe me, anyone can...

I don't believe so, Candy. It wouldn't output anything suitable for use with SL's templates, unless you used it to generate shots of garments created with it on their models and then used those as source photos for recreating them for SL. Looks like a nifty program though.

I know this is a old post I am responding to, but they just introduced a way to add models to their program. If enough of us ask, perhaps they will add the SL base avatars as well?

You never know. They'd certainly have a market here.

Thanks...

Hi there! I'm really, really new to SL and still bumbling my way through the tutorials. I have only the slightest idea of what to do with these textures, for now... But I know that these things are going to look great once I figure out the way to do it. SO... thank you VERY much for sharing these textures! I am especially in love with the Black Leather Jacket! YOU ROCK!

Cheers,
Lyrra M.

Thanks Lyrra :) I can't take any credit for the sample textures available for download with the templates. I'm not sure who did those. Someone at LL I believe. All I did was the templates themselves. Whoever it was did an excellent job.

Hey guys, I'm brand new to creating clothes and the templates look great, the only problem I am having is with the grids, how do I get them off of my clothing, is there a way to just delete them, or do I have to create over top of them to get rid of them.

Thanks for the help in adavnce.

Don't do you work on any of the existing template layers. Always work on newly created layers. When you're ready to save your texture, turn off visibility on all the template layers.

Also make sure to browse through the sticky thread of links. You might find links to a few gems in there. Once you have alpha channels down it really just comes down to coming to grips with the quirks of the templates (like learning where the bad stretch areas are) and lots of practice and experimentation.

Full set of stripe templates?
04-13-2008 12:07
Chip, These are great. I know I'm being greedy and you may have answered already, but I'm not having any luck finding the reply here.

Is there a full set of the Horizontal Stripes templates anywhere? Arikinui seems to only have a flattened version of the female lower template. I'm particularly interested in the male versions. Thanks so much for all this great work!

Thanks for the reminder. I still haven't gotten around to redoing them since the forum ate the old ones. It's on my to do list so hopefully I'll have some new ones uploaded in the next few days. If not, please remind me again. Brain like a sieve and all that. :)

Great guides...had a similar one but these are great.

One thing..... is there a tutorial on how to create tops or bottoms that is detailed?

I've taken real pictures of dress tops and cut them out and put them on the avatars but it's not always easy, in fact it's a pain. I see that some people cannot be using this method because there top looks much much better I just can't figure out what they are doing.

Check the sticky thread of links for links to some tutorials. When you use photographs to create clothing textures, especially tops, you have to fit the photographs to the templates to match the distortions created by the way the UV map is laid out. If you're using photoshop you can use the liquify filter or smart objects to warp the images to fit the templates.
