Another quick question, should I be designing on a new layer? Or duplicate one you've already made and go from there? What's the process to beginning a new item?

You always want to work on new layers. You might want to create them between the bottom grid layer and the upper edge and seam matching guide layers, but it's really a matter of personal preference. All of the template layers are there for reference only so you know where you need to paint and can see what seams and edges connect together. You don't want to put any of your work on those layers.

That's what I figured. Now, I am still a little lost, I mean I used the default template before so I shouldn't be this lost, but do I fill over like the edge layers? Or better yet, so you have a screen shot of a finished product in Photoshop, I think something like that would definitely clear up some of my newbish questions. :) Right now I'm just playing around with it until I get a real good hang of it, so I'm trying to make a simple shirt.

If you go to the downloads section of the SL site there are some sample clothing textures. Resize them to 1024x1024 and paste them over the templates so you can examine how they're made and how they relate to the templates. That should help you out a lot.

How about make the cells act as "Shading Guide", they seem to be following the female body, but how about the male one? Seeing those cells form female breast make it hard to figure out how a male clothing would be. Not to mention me as gay wish NOT to use that template.

The cell lines could be followed to make clothings edges all good and nice looking, if the cells where made in such way that they would be helpful.

Delu, the structure of the male and female avatars are exactly the same so the polygonal structure of the template represents both equally. The shading layers are only there to show you where things like fingernails, toes, and nipples are located, which also are the same for male and female. You might want to check the link in the first post to the seperate topography guides which do have male and female versions.

asking for the moon...
02-12-2007 11:54
another relative newbie- not so bad with photoshop and I've made some textures for building, now I'm interested in the trickier bits...

I think these templates are going to be a big help- but I'm wondering- is there anywhere I can find an image of a completed skin? It would be a big help to study where another artist made their marks, but I haven't been able to find any images or tutorials online...

I realize asking for an image like this is asking for a freebie- but maybe someone has a throw-away one they don't care about or knows where I can find one to look at... (?)

I understand processes much better if I can see a finished product...

thanks lots- lt.

thankey, but a question
03-06-2007 15:55
I was wondering, What format i can save my files in so they retain transparency? Jpg doesn't like it, and i believe I tried to save it as a Tiff and it saves the alpha as black... I are sad now.

Hi Ima :) The only file format you can upload to SL that supports alpha channels is TGA.

Chip's templates via BitTorrent
04-15-2007 22:43
Hello!
I've seen that many people say they can't download Chip's templates, so I've set them up for download via BitTorrent.
If you download them, please keep them active in your BitTorrent client to help keeping the download active and fast.

The torrent file is attached in the zip file here, and can also be downloaded directly via this link.
Thanks to my friend Anders who generously hosts the download.

Uber Super Cool template...
04-16-2007 11:33
I absolutely LOVE the work that Chip Midnight and Robin Sojourner both have done to supply the community with a good, detailed (and FREE) template to use for clothing design. Where would we be without both of their contributions?

I like each template for different reasons...Chip has nice neat seam lables and numbers, while Robin has color bands to help me keep track of where I am. I like to use them both.

As a matter of fact, I like to use them both at the same time! I've created a PSD that I use everytime I create clothes using a combination of Chip's and Robin's templates. I've gotten so much valued use out of it, that I thought I should tell everyone how I made it and a bit on how I use it. So if you are interested, especially Chip or Robin, please feel free to take a look.

P.S. - Sorry if the page isn't all styled and "purty-fied", but I didn't have a lot of time today. I may spruce it up if it seems people visit a lot.

Suzhanna, I added a link to your post in the first post in the thread. Thanks a bunch for setting it up and to your friend for the generous hosting. :)

Pyxel, that's great! I'm adding a link to that also. Thanks for sharing it!

So frustrated
04-21-2007 10:24
I'm making a pair of hotpants. I am also driving myself mad. This is the first time in a long time I've tried something like this. I'm going nuts because evidently I'm not fully understanding how the image fits on the polygons. The front of the thigh like zags down, makes tiny little wings, so instead of a smooth curve it's... well ugly. Is there a tool to show my how these polygons fit? Or has anyone encountered this before? Is it just my av? because it looks great on the preview

Hi Chloe :) I added a couple of links to some things you might find helpful at the bottom of the first post in this thread. Beyond that, make sure to have a look through the sticky thread of links.

Ack! A couple of people have noticed that my tutorial for combining Chip's and Robin's templates was missing a few details! Sorry it took so long for me to get back to it, but I've updated the page and you should be able to follow along completely now.

Thanks to all of those whe brought it to my attention!

A little bit up on this page you find /109/72/40762/8.html#post1609939 where you can download a bittorrent file to get the CMFF files. As far as I know, it's alive and well.

Glad to know that's still being seeded. For now that seems to be the only way to download them. The primarly download site was at slboutique and that link stopped working when they changed the url to the new Onrez shopping site. Hopefully the templates will have a new URL shortly. In the meantime, I've attached the flattened JPG versions.

EDIT: I accidentally attached the wrong lower body template. It's fixed now :)

Thanks ... I've been going nuts trying to find the templates (disk crash ate the earlier ones). I'll leave the torrent running for a few days.

ftp://ftp.the-server.net/pub/sl/AllCMFF.torrent is the URL for the torrent.

For those of you mystiufied by the talk of "Torrents", see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent

And if you have cable or DSL, get a client and start moving the bits.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client lists most of them.

The templates are available in normal download form again. See the downloads section of the first post in this thread. :)

I don't believe so, Candy. It wouldn't output anything suitable for use with SL's templates, unless you used it to generate shots of garments created with it on their models and then used those as source photos for recreating them for SL. Looks like a nifty program though.
