From: Rolig Loon Well, I'm running XP with an NVidia GeForce 8500. The new SLCP previewer loads OK, and I can rotate and move the avatar. My only problem is that the previewer doesn't recognize my alpha channel, so I can't see how well things are working at the edges of my outfits, where things are supposed to go transparent. I was using the Beta version before, and it kept crashing so I upgraded. Rolig- yes, but what you run on XP isn't terribly relevant, because I'm not running XP. Vista is a bit of a tyrant, from what I hear. I used to save my images as jpgs with a white background. I could see exactly where edges lined up. (Sorry, I misspelled rolig's name.)

User error to blame!
03-13-2008 16:19
Good news, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the program. I went back and redownloaded the file and reinstalled, and boom, it works like a charm. I'm going to blame it on user error.

From: Keanna Spyker Hi, I downloaded the previewer, unzipped and everything, went to open it and it crashes on itself. ?___? It opens, loads, and crashes all in a matter of 2 seconds. Is there anything I could be doing wrong? I even tried to download your old version, but it is no longer available in the links I have found. :\ Thank you for all your time! Keanna You have a problem with either a: video card b: operating system c: a misxture of both. The question can't be answered because there are too many variables. You need specifics. Like what type of computer: Windows, Mac or Linux its age what video card you are running. and its memory All these things are relevant. We can't read you mind. So when you offer some more info maybe you will get more help.

From: Keanna Spyker I'm guessing because almost a month has passed there is no answer to my question....? Nor mine, although it might not have been interpreted as a question at the time, now that I look back at it. My fault. I am running XP on a custom machine with 2 Gb RAM and an NVidia Ge Force 8500 video card that has 512Mb on board. As I said in my earlier note, the previewer works fine except that (a) it doesn't recognize any alpha channel, so transparent components of my clothing aren't transparent and (b) the labels on the selection buttons all say "UPPER.JPG," "LOWER.JPG," and so forth, which I find odd. I have downloaded and re-installed the program three times, with no improvement. My guess is that there's nothing wrong with my machine, but that I've missed some toggle in the program that tells it to interpret my files as 32 bit TGA, not JPG. So where is it?

If those are the names on the buttons then your tga files aren't loaded onto those layers. There's certainly no toggle for turning TGA on/off, since that is the only file format accepted by SLCP; the fact that the default templates are jpegs was an oversight on my part that doesn't affect anything.
In a nutshell, to apply a clothing item with alpha transparency then click on any of the blank buttons (ie. NOT a button that refers to UPPER or LOWER) and then select your image in the file requester that comes up.
Can you maybe post a screenshot of how it looks with your clothing applied? Your post seems to indicate that the clothing is visible without alpha which confuses me.

Bingo! I KNEW there was a simple trick I was overlooking. I was so fascinated by the buttons with UPPER and LOWER on them that it never occurred to me that I ought to try a blank button. Duh! To see what I was seeing, try making any simple piece of clothing (a T-shirt, maybe) and NOT trimming the fabric layer with a mask. You don't really need to, after all. Just let the alpha channel determine the visible shape of the work. Save the file as TGA and pick it up with the wrong (JPG) button in your viewer. When you do, you'll see that the fabric shows up fine, but it covers the entire upper body of the avatar, ignoring the cutouts that should be created by the alpha. As I guessed earlier, it's because when you use the wrong button, the previewer doesn't recognize the file as 32 bit TGA. Thanks, Johan. Great tool, BTW.

I'm running windows XP with 2gigs ram. I'm on a newer laptop, the Acer Aspire 5570Z running on an integrated Intel chipset-- the 945 Express family. I have no problem running things like Zbrush, or SL and photoshop, even two instances of SL at higher graphic settings. I can even run the demo of AVpainter without any hassle :[
I'm trying to figure out if the zip I got was corrupt, or if my system requirements are too low-- they don't seem to be by the other things I can do with it.

just wondering...

I know i'm like the weirdest person on the planet because I don't use Photoshop lol.. I use fireworks. Would it be possible at some point in time for an update that recognizes PNG files and JPG files? I never save in TGA because Fireworks doesn't save in that format and its a pain in the behind to have to convert the file before I can view it.
Just a suggestion from one of the weirdo's

This program is great! Obviously it needs some work, but I'm already happy with it due to the fact that I could not afford to continue uploading and hating my designs any longer! Last night, I designed a pair of pants for my character, and when I tried to get online...OH NO! Grid Maintainence! I couldn't get online!
Well I couldn't download this program until this morning either, but it's already made a huge difference in my design process. No more frustrating wastes of L$10!
Thanks a lot for this program. I encourage you whole-heartedly to continue it's development!

Just read the entire thread (whew). I'm wondering if there was any news on a Linux version (since it was mentioned a while back) or if I just overlooked it when I was reading.
I've been running SCLP under WINE for a while without any real issues, so this is more curiosity than anything.

Just haven't gotten around to compiling a Linux version. Shouldn't take long if/when I have Linux running, so the main barrier is the time it takes me to set them up. I'll just need a free afternoon when I'm not up to anything more important, so maybe next week.

Thanks! I had the problem of not having alpha channels show either!

I downloaded the plugin from multiple browsers, but whenever I go to extract the archive, I get an error that the header is damaged.

From: Jake24 Numanox I downloaded the plugin from multiple browsers, but whenever I go to extract the archive, I get an error that the header is damaged. Well just for clarity, SLCP isn't a plugin for anything, it's a standalone program. That has nothing to do with the archive though; if the file is damaged, then you just need to try downloading again some other time. You know how it is, once in a while the server hosting the download is just flaky (this is a free host after all.) SLCP uses TGA files, so if those aren't showing up in the file browser, um, I don't know what the issue is actually.

Isn't that the one that's at the link on the first page of this sticky? It was current a month or so back, when I downloaded a fresh copy myself.

Change default shapes?
06-30-2008 15:00
Hi and thank you for taking the time to make such an awesome tool I use it daily^^ I was wondering however if there was a way to change the default female shape as it differs slightly from the current shape I am working on. I know this is a minor problem for most, but I had to ask. Don't ask, don't get - right? Thanks!

Glad you like the tool, but unfortunately that specific request is unlikely. Given that your shape in-world is continuously modifiable based on a multitude of sliders, there's no way for SLCP to know what that adjusted shape is.

For some reason, the program won't accept my PNG files. I use PNG for simpler projects because I don't have to fiddle with an alpha channel. Is there any way to get a PNG to work in this program?
