I would say that us, regular paying players who care and contribute and build Second Life, are far more important than some venture capitalist throwing a few million dollars at Linden Lab with the sole aim of making a profit.

We are what makes the game what it is. Without us, their money wouldn't make a bit of difference, it would just be an empty wasteland with a few abandoned plywood cubes here and there.

We are what should be driving SL and it's future. We are the ones who should be involved in the planning and decisions. We are the ones who should be talking about new features. Not some external influence who probably doesn't even have an account, but happens to have lots of money.

Lewis

That is pretty much what I was saying Lewis. :) Though both the resident/client and venture capital investor hold a symbiotic relationship.

=P I gave them to this guy. He seems to be a bit attached to them.

Funny, that looks like Marcus last night. He enjoys being chained.

I've been thinking lately about what Second Life would be like without some of its more prominent residents and businesses.

Ultimately, it'd probably not be very different from now. Very few individuals are equipped with skills on level that cannot be replaced, especially in environment which attracts people with similar skill sets (content creation, programming, social interaction etc) ... so while most of such people may not bother to re-do things others already did earlier, it doesn't mean these things would never get done without these particular people who did them in SL first. Nature always finds way to fill the void and all that.

I think it goes beyond skillsets and more into the personas of the most prominent individual. The personalities aren't replaceable while the skillsets can be replaced by others with similar skills.

Ummm, "all of" whom? I tend to object to that phrase.

Given that he was suspended from the forums, his post was without a doubt forwarded from a resmod to a Linden that enacted the suspension, all of us agree that he revealed no methodology and his intent was not malicious, what else but the moderation system exists as the cause of this snafu?

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?
Yes, it's true, I have a blog now!

I suppose it depends on what aspect(s) of personality you have on mind ^^ i mentioned social interaction in the skillset, in the sense some of things will require individuals which are oriented on both cooperation, sharing, will to do something 'for people' etc. But really, maybe if i try to word it differently... i believe there's significant number of individuals with the sort of personality/skills needed to achieve what's been done in SL so far. But simply because it's already been done, these people have no reason to reinvent the wheel, so to speak (e.g. how many offline markeplaces like slExchange or slBoutique can SL really bear before the market is more than saturated, which throttles the interest in development of competition... but it doesn't mean if there was no slBoutique and no slExchange then there would never be such service period ^^; )

We hear all kinds of complaints that people had objects returned.

Was anyone actually banned for using this exploit?

Seems unlikely anyone was.

Well, supposedly there is an appeal process. Supposedly they are willing to listen to reason and overturn incorrect decisions.

Mmhmm. And by the time they decide what to do about it, the period of suspension is over anyway?

Persona is a commodity as much as skill and it's the most unstable and readily replaceable asset of all. Just ask anyone who has been the It Girl or the vast number of stars who left a successful series to pursue movies and cash in on their fleeting fame.

I can't judge whether what was revealed in the post by Cristiano was detailed enough to allow replicating the exploit, since that post has been removed. I can't agree that posting about the exstence of a serious bug should be help back until there's an official reply. Especially if it's an exploit currently in use and being used against folks. If there was an exploit in use at 2 AM on Saturday night of a long weekend, I would not expect developers to drive into the office to fix it, but it would be nice to know it existed even as a warning to back up work or take some basic protective measure. It's like arguing you shouldn't reveal the existence of a new computer virus until Symantec works up a a fix, because that will encourage it to spread.

If the bug is fixed, they could show the post and make the whole event transparent, which should quiet some critics and answer questions, at least.

Clearly, you have never worked in the software industry.
