From: Vares Solvang Absolutely it's unethical. But it's not fraud and it's not Linden Lab's fault.
It was a stupid mistake. Nothing more, nothing less. This thread is becoming the semantics thread lol. Agreed on unethical, agreed that its not fraud, and it is a stupid mistake that is being exploited. But LL is at fault as if enough people are making the same mistake, then its reasonable to assume its the SL interface, and that is something LL has sole control over.

From: MadamG Zagato Is there a database or someplace we can all see who these peeps are for the purpose of banning them from our own land as well? I know others may not want them around either. Perhaps when they can't fly from parcel to parcel without bouncing off of red ban lines they'll get the message! i try to catch a few of them here: http://kdc.ethernia.net/sys/ban_list.php

We often have to split and change parcels on our condo land, but here are a few rules we always abide by:
Always keep your land set at $999999999999999 in the money box, no exceptions unless the land is going to be sold. (As soon as you buy land, set the price way up)
When selling land to a person, or trading land, etc ALWAYS set the name of that person in the SELL TO box, no exceptions.
If passing the land within the group prepare, have your group title on, set in the name of the person you selling to, have everything ready and be prepared for the sale or transfer.
Hopefully the new thing wed will stop some of this, but if you are a first time buyer or seller, its confusing, so call in a mentor or a friend that is experienced to help you. If you have never subdivided land or joined land its confusing too, call for help the first time, and be very careful, read all the pop ups and instructions carefully.
The land swoopers watch that sale list and refresh it every few second, hours on end, if you are not one step ahead of the boogy man he will get you.

Bans and buying...
08-22-2006 04:56
From: Jopsy Pendragon does banning someone actually prevent them from buying the land? Unfortunetly no. I once thought that this should be the case. I mean what better way to send out a message to someone you don't want on your property then not allow them to even buy it? This however was said to be BAD for all. So I never said anymore about it. In light of all this talk here though. I really do think if you ban someone why ARE they allowed to buy the land they are banned from? I mean that may not be WHY you banned them. But, if you don't welcome them to your property. Why on earth would you really want to see them in possession of what you are now trying to sell? Unless you really don't care in which case you can UNBAN them so they too could buy it at that point?! Simple in and of itself. This idea too though I'm sure wouldn't meet with a great deal of applause. Unless of course you do think like this? Hope this answers your question Jopsy. I really wish what you asked in short was YES! Isaac

From: Magnum Serpentine I totally disagree with you Its so true it doesn't matter if you do. If someone ignores the warnings on their computer about viruses and opens the email anyway, its their fault. If soemone ignores the warning about shaking nitroglycerine, its their fault. If someone ignores the warning that pops up when they set land to sell its their fault.

Well all I can say is thank you all for such support and the ones that want to blame blame blame me that is fine! I have bought and sold land and have never run into this issue, but if there wasn’t an issue here there would be NO discussion. This is the 109th post! I think there is an issue with this topic, whether it is a bug or bad ethics!
What this all boils down to is that no matter what world you are in, the ethics of people are just amazing! W.H. just appalls me!
And you guys that are so convinced I was just plain ignorant, I hope this never happens to you cause it is devastating....Oh and by the way there was no buyers remorse just disgust for unethical behavior...
Please be aware also there is a group of people heading up a group called "Players Against Land Abuse" the website is the same, this is a website to SHOUT to the world of SL who has ripped peeps off!
ANYWAY FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN SUPPORTIVE! THANK YOU AND I WILL ADVISE OF THE FINAL OUTCOME AND WHEATHER LINDEN LABS CHOOSE TO DO ANYTHING.

I sat by and watched this thread and completely understand both sides of the arguement. I've also looked at the new land sales implementation in 1.12.. making it idiot-proof (so to speak). You cannot sell your land unless you've completed (and not bypass or glare over) all steps. I'm curious if we'll be having this same discussion afterwards if a person STILL willfully sets their land to 1L to public sale and argue that it was a mistake. Then what? They have to fully intentionally sell it as public, and enter a price, and confirm yet again that this is what they want to do. I fully sympathize with the joining land for sale problem though. That's a LL bug, pure and simple. I was unable to test this in the preview grid since it doesn't allow for joining land. As for, oh it's 3L/sqm, guess what, that happens ALL THE TIME, hell, I've seen less than 1L/sqm sales that were also fully intentional and was thanked by the seller for buying it. I've operated on the basis that if someone claims it was a obvious mistake, and not seller's remorse (selling the land below market value, and because someone bought it within 10 seconds, then trying to get it back so they can sell it for more than what they listed it for to make more money), then yeah, by all means I'll sell it back to them for the same price. But these new land sales tools will make alot of land buyers less likely to sell it back and put the onus completely on the seller.

The strange thing is I personally know the said EVIL person, and met that person a long time ago. They provided me with lots of info about how there are all these land scanners etc in the metaverse. As far as I know they had a legitimate business of picking up abandoned land before LL decided they wanted abandoned land for themselves so that they can resell what they sold in the first place for a second set of profit --thereby pretty much ruining this person's business and not really benefiting the SL society. Most abandoned land ends up getting auctioned or turned into First Land. first land almost always gets resold fast to make a profit then next thing you know there's advertisement banners or a shooting range next to your French Villa. Take your pick.
The real question is, are monsters born or are they created? I am starting to opt more and more for the second one.

Umm, I would say this is your fault. I just sold a bunch of land for the first time and the client warned me about what I was doing. Its made pretty clear unless you are drunk or stoned when doing it.
If you ignore a stop sign and plow into traffic, is it the stop sign or the cars fault?
Hope your next land purchase goes better. Next time, RTFM.

From: Jonas Pierterson Thats their mistake too. Fact. So, Peter is *not* acting stupid by raising false wolf alarms, and is not responsible whatsoever for situation where his valid warning goes ignored? Quite curious how you're going to justify this as intelligent course of action, and strictly receiver's stupidity.

When enough of teh gum chewing public keep making the same mistake, maybe its not stupidity, but a poor design. I'm not 100% just how many people are putting land for sale up by mistake or are getting caught in the join land bug, but it really doesn't matter. Of course, there will always be stupid people who do stupid things, and I'm sure that even after 1.12 is released there will still be idiots making avoidable mistakes. For them, I offer a gift.... A ride in an elevator that has a big red button that says "CABLE RELEASE." Natural selection will do the rest.

The problem here arose from joining land, there is no warning when you do this. This particular problem has been acknowledged as a known issue by LL, I believe.

Quite curious how you're going to justify this as intelligent course of action, and strictly receiver's stupidity. I'm going to disagree with this being an appropriate metaphor. Peter *is* at fault for raising false alarms. However, when *John* raises an alarm and noone comes to protect the flock, it is not his fault, and he should not be then required to revamp the village's system of alarm. The fault in this instance rests on the villagers for *assuming* John's alarm is unimportant.
