didn't flip sell slboutique.com to electric sheep recently?

Yes, indeedy, I did. I made announcements, there was coverage in the Herald and the Metaverse Messenger, and I've been completely transparent about it. I owe that to the people who've put trust in me by using the site. I continue to run the day to day operations as a consultant of Electric Sheep.

Now, what the heck does any of that have to do with the slashdotting of this upcoming, very cool sounding event? Nothing at all.

Thanks.

As I have to wonder about the fanboyz, and how much of a vested interest they have in corporate america in sl.

Yah, I mean corporate america obviously killed the internet. One can only imagine what corporate america would do to SL.

Isn't this just the electric sheep company wanting to be an iw advertizing company? Perhaps I missed their purpose.

In less than a week, Second Life has been slashdotted four times (although some other articles tended to comment on Second Life as well). This is utterly impressive — congratulations on The Happening making it as well :)

Now, read the comments (if you dare) and you'll see something in common: people are utterly clueless regarding virtual realities and what you can do with them today.

Still, it's better than the alternative: being ignored!

Some stats from Help Island: in the past week, after each Slashdot article, the number of new users rised from the usual 650-700 per day to around 1700! (ie. three times as much). Impressive statistics! Perhaps we might reach a million users by the end of this year; we'll certainly be very close to 200,000 by the end of this month... or, put into another way: we doubled the user base in just a bit over two months... and it took us 3 years to reach 100,000 in the first place.

Wow. Wow. And I say it again (in case you missed it): Wow.

Jerry23 writes "This Saturday The Happening will bring Second Life to first life. The Electric Sheep Company, a new metaverse developer, has virtually recreated R&B Coffee in Washington DC for use in a mixed-reality party and benefit for the DC art scene and several local nonprofits. Real people will mingle with avatars via realtime video projections in the real and virtual R&B spaces, and MAKE Magazine's Phillip Torrone will be on-hand showing off his homemade Virtual Reality headsets and gloves. The whole world is invited to attend in DC or Second Life, whichever's closer for you." This is just conceptually a weird idea to me.

Ok I re read it. The idea that they recreated R&B Coffee shop is interesting :) The benefit to local non profits is also nice.

Quite the opposite. Check the web site before you make such assumptions; the portfolio page might surprise you.

Excellent. Couldn't find Sheep Island today though. Are the sheep worried or something?

Opening the island would spoil the surprise.

Join the SL group "The Happening" to reserve a spot at Saturday's event! (Or ask an officer in the group for an invite if it's not open, this I'm not sure about.)

... what do they mean by people mixing with video avatars? Is that some kind of holographic projection thingy? And where is this happening in SL? Can anyone go over there?

... okay checked the portfolio. I guess I would just like a broken down summary of what to expect there and see if it's something I'd check out in SL. We have to join a group to check out the SL event?

Sheep Island will open for public inspection tomorrow. There's still a bunch of plywood lying around. Apologies on the delay to Garnet (you were the first person to register for the event, before we were internet celebrities) and everyone else who's been looking.

Not you in particular. I don't know who you are at all and really I don't care to. It just seems that there are a handful of forum conspiracy theorists who always have something to complain about and no matter how well things are explained and by how many people they chose to remain stupid and ignorant. I'm always on the side of not bullshit so take that as you will.

Thanks for posting this Flip, hopefully SL will see the usual growth spurt.

As for confict of interest, or free advertising.. huh? What is the General forum for if not to post stuff of general interest about SL. My suspicion is that the poster with the problem is just re-treading their often voiced dislike of all commercial activity in SL.

It floors me that anyone would question Flip's ethics anyway.

Oh... and in the interests of full disclosure, I was part of the team that launched SLBoutique and also got $$ from the sale. If you think I have a conflict of interest, well you can bite me.

That doesn't say a thing about in world advertising, unless I'm missing something? Even if it did, so what?

When I bought Indigo you were part of a group of people convinced I was bringing billboards to SL and that's why I was buying the sim - same thing with Fizik and avalon. That's the first thing that brought me to the forums, actually; to clear it up that no, I wasn't a business, and I was buying Indigo to make a residential sim.

Actually, and I'm so going to regret saying this, but it does actually have an awful lot to do with it.

But then, all of a sudden, there's a ground swell of immense FIC-like proportions. And I'm somebody who never, ever signed up to the idea of the FIC before. But now, well you all seem to be melding together into the same gestalt and the tangled little webs don't seem so little any more. I guess it was always going to happen at some point and I'm still kind of hoping that we have a sudden influx of people so it can dilute the self-importance that's starting to brim over the surface.

Woohoo lets bite Surreal. I bet she tastes like caramel :D

I forgot that being married to flip automatically is a conflict of interest on my part and that I should never agree with him and never support him publically. HA

Stupid and ignorant, conspiracy therorists. Why is it that some ppl feel its ok to just out and out insult others.

Come on now lets be realistic. This is just business as usual. Re read Coco's post for goodness sake. I don't look at this with rose colored glasses on, no matter how much I am insulted. Kewl they are getting slash dotted. kewl they are helping a non profit. But in the end its just a rl business doing it. So it belongs in advertizing or special events forum. Thats all its not a big deal till ppl start insulting each other.

BTW if you didn't care you wouldn't of responded.

Cat.

What I'm getting from this, you're all arguing over if this is the right spot to post this? Does it *REALLY* matter all that much? 2 pages of this and it's bound to be locked soon anyways.

If you have to personaly attack me to get your point across then then I have no interest in your event or your business. Carry on without my further input.

Forum thread marked: not ok to post in.

No need to feel regret, Moopf, you've always stated your honest opinions and back them up with rational reason, far better than I could hope to! That can't be said for everyone, myself included at times. ;)

SL is growing at an exponential pace, and some self-examination is probably a good thing to keep in mind now that such major growth, as Gwyneth pointed out, is upon us.

That being said, the time to act is now if you want to be part of the evolution of the metaverse, as the numbers showing the popularity points towards an explosion of new residents this year.

-Flip
