Are you saying it is not correct to interpret FU to mean FUCK YOU? No matter what other connotation it carries, FU stands for FUCK YOU in English. Sure FU can refer to a kung fu thing, but in ENGLISH FU also is the abbreviated shorthand for FUCK YOU.

If you and former resmod Hathor want to say I am stupid for thinking FU can stand for FUCK YOU in English, then perhaps you need to become more familiar with English, because in the ENGLISH language, regardless of other meaning, FU clearly can mean FUCK YOU. Capische?

Why persist in claiming it was otherwise? You have made several very strong arguments about the ResMod program, but pushing this particular non-issue is just odd.

No, in that context, it was completely invalid to take it as such, especially once the meaning has been reiterated. Claiming that people need to become more familiar with the English language is no better than commenting on someone's intelligence. Context is everything. I am shocked at how strongly you are holding onto such a weak claim - and I'm not sure what the purpose of doing so is. English may be my second language, but I dare say I speak as well if not better than you do. Taking FU in that context to mean "fuck you" is just plain wrong.

Since you are so bent on analyzing english, everything after the a is one phrase - resmod fu roundhouse kick. You can't just extract the fu and isolate it. Resmod fu is further classifying the roundhouse kick. You have roundhouse kicks in kung fu, martial arts, and fighting. You don't have fuck you roundhouse kicks - this is not a known phrase. While you may kick someone while yelling fuck you at them, there is no such thing as a "fuck you roundhouse kick". Claiming that the fu represents fuck you is ridiculous.

Nope. No capische. Ironic choice of words for someone lecturing me on the english language. One of the very first things you learn in any study of language is that context is extremely important. Please see my example on the phrase "sob story". A word without context has no meaning... The earliest theories of language actually said that a word was defined only by the words around it. This isn't the accepted theory any longer, but the basic premise, that context defines words to a large extent, is still true. To ignore context is to ignore the true meaning of the sentance. If you're determined to ignore the meaning of the sentance, yes, that invalidates your opinion, sorry.

In the first place, I didn't make this rule. The Lindens made it. It is the same rule they made for the world.

In the second place, you are not my child, and I wouldn't want you for my child, even if you were young enough. You give yourself airs to think I want to mother you.

I don't give a damn how you act, or what words you use, on your own time, with your own friends, or really anything about you whatsoever. Just as I expect for you not to give a damn about what I say or do in my own home, or with my own friends.

But here we are in the official forum for the entire Second Life population, which is advertised as being PG. Generally, in circumstances like this where adults gather - such as the mall, the legislature, the local news, the gym, the driver's license bureau, the movies, the park, the recreation center, need I go on? and all other places where strangers from disparate walks of life who happen to have like-minded interests come to discuss those interests and socialize - a certain modicum of civility is expected. That's just the way things are.

The issue is, what are these forums promised to be? And are they, really?

Admittedly, it is most difficult to assign ratings to anything, whether it is a movie or an online game. And once assigned, it gets even trickier trying to enforce them. It gets down to, in the case of movies and whatnot, the stupidity of actually COUNTING the number of F words in something, then seeing if the work has any other redeemable qualities to make up for that one extra f-word or whatever.

Now, obviously that is ridiculous on the face of it, and the whole thing is very difficult. On the other hand, we have a need as a society to have a fairly good idea of what we are getting into. The ratings serve as warnings, more or less, or should. And it is necessary to pretty much enforce them as a general rule.

The problem is the Lindens state that this is a PG forum and yet deliver to the unwary reader a complete cesspool. And then they basically say sink or swim in it, at your peril, cause you know, we can always GET YOU. For saying "moron." ("F**ktard, is, of course, all right.)

And no, Eboni, I did not get a warning for whatever you are talking about above.

I have gotten one warning, and that was when Weedy was saying for the umpteeth time that I needed to stop injecting myself into threads. It was a thread about mentors, in General.

I finally said to her, "No, why don't you get off MY forums instead."

For that, I received an official warning. However people can say to me, "You're full of s**t and I dare you to AR that" and the like, and they get off scot-free.

Yes, I have an agenda. It is that I would prefer a forums where people talking to me that way was not the norm. But my major agenda in this thread is to point out that we have a rule that says these forums should be PG, yet we have no enforcement of any such at all.

A couple of things. The forums are not public space. They are private space owned by a company, and we pay a fee to access them. Also, they are 18+ - so no random children to corrupt as you would find in the mall, etc.

PG means nothing except parental guidance. We were made no promises. One solution that many (including myself) have suggested is that LL define what they mean by PG. At least then you would have something concrete to post about.

But even then, you have all the shades of grey, such as if I can't tell you to fuck yourself, can I tell you to bugger off? What about FO?

Lastly... modicum of civility. Who decides what is acceptable if it isn't Linden Labs? You? Me? Siggy!!

I just finished reading the TOS, Community Standards, and the Forum General Guidelines (my eyes are bleeding) and I found nothing regarding the forums being PG, except for Jeska's sticky in the Classifieds stating that you can't post full-frontal nudity.

If you're going to put quotations around something attributed to someone else, you really should have the decency to make it an actual, factual quote of what they said. I'm surprised a writer wouldn't know that.
