The Profanity Conundrum: Here's the deal.

The forums are PG. Can't handle that, put the forums on your ignore list.

What is a rule and what is reality are two different things. The forums are whatever the Lindens let people get away with.

I am sure that Jeska Linden and the resident moderators are quite capable of reading the post in context, especially when Torley Linden has already read and understood the intent of the post.

The forums aren't a bar, they aren't your living room. They are a place for users of a 3D simulation program to discuss the product, like an AutoCad forum.

So viewing the post in context excuses the profanity oh high and mighty one?

I think Siggy was right on with his evaluation. If you think this forum is a place for users of a 3d sim proggy to discuss the product, you are sadly disillusioned.

I'll treat the forums as I like just as you may. I just like to point out hypocrisy when it glares out in the darkness.

Religious people with sincere objections to the use of profanity and other forms of taboo speech are losers.

Second Life should not give religious people any respect, certainly not if it constrains my speech in any way.

I think an eyeroll is in order here.

I wrote a script that could convert hand massaged data from simple Hewlett Packard PLT files into prims. Maybe that could serve as a starting point.

This might be more appropriate in the "Most of SL is ugly" thread, though.

No simply asking how long it takes for someone to become a netnanny. Coming in for 3 seconds and telling people to piss off... seems a nice way to join a 'community' (as I'm told this is supposed to be).

I find it strangely funny that in my saying 'you don't have to listen' I acknowledge that my freedom of speech doesn't come with a covernote that all must listen.

It almost doesnt matter whether the standard is PG or M. The issue that affects all of us is that the standard be defined clearly so we can know with certainty what is allowed, and what is not, AND that the rules be applied CONSISTENTLY AND EVENHANDEDLY.

The rules have to count equally and not be held applicable depending upon who is the enforcer on duty, or who is the offender.

If the forums are PG then define in a list which words are forbidden so we can know. The way it is now some members can post profanity and its ignored, some resmods can post profanity and tell the membership FU, and then there are some poor sucker members who get disciplined for typing the same exact words, (a real discipline that counts, not the pretend ones that dont really count.)

If one member cannot post profanity or tell other members "FU," which is still the same insult whether its spelled out or not, then NO ONE should get away with it, particularly a resmod.

I really thought you were smarter than that. How come you and tweedledumb (forget his name already) keep insisting that Satchmo meant F U as in Fuck you, instead of fu as in resmod-fu (kung-fu reference)?? Seriously, can't you find a better leg to stand on so to speak, this is really getting old.

I think the 'fu' mentioned by a resmod 'resmod fu' was a play on 'kung fu' - not 'fuck you'.

Phobos designs has a wonderful 'kung fu' style outfit I modeled for - they though it extremely funny to have the box simply say 'Fu'.. I giggled over the ambiguity of it (because eh - its me) - but lets not get so overly PC that we start reading stuff into everything.

I mean the last thing *I* want to get into is a heated debate on racism over 'the little black dress'

I could be wrong, but:

I haven't seen anyone disciplined for using profanity on this forum.

I haven't seen anyone complain that they're offended by the use of profanity on this forum.

So why exactly is this even being discussed? Could we not put energy and essay-writing skills towards solving problems that are actually problems, and put the non-issues on the backburner?

Put simply: the very last thing the chronic essayists want are solutions.

hehe as for the rest - yes I agree.

It's being discussed because it's what in the media we would call 'a slow news day'.

The resmods haven't done anything, no upgrade happening, a lack of new bush signs, or other drama to dredge - so its a fallback to forum regulation and how we should comport ourselves

Personally, all I can say on the subject is 'look to your own house first!' - I've found the most intollerant of all the folks across the world are the overly P.C. ones
