TOKOROTEN by Yuzuru Jewell
http://kanae.net/secondlife/tokoroten.html

This is another free tool from the maker of Rokuro. Mark out a shape and extrude it into the 3rd dimension. Many options to change the shape. Exports sculpt map image files. TOKOROTEN is Japanese jelly extruded to thin strips.

Blender Import / Export for Sculpties
08-11-2007 12:38
There's an importer script for sculpties in Blender at
/8/60/203571/1.html

It also supports export via texture baking as the material is created on import of a sculptie.

Update:

A lot has changed since this post, the importer is now a range of scripts for handling sculpties in Blender, including a script based bake that is more accurate than the material method. See http://dominodesigns.info for more information!

But keep in mind that sculpties are such a special case of 3D modeling that the criteria used in this review have little relevance for SL.

Plopp
10-03-2007 09:55
Plopp is more cute than useful. It is originally a 3D modeling tool for six year olds---really.

You draw a picture of two sides of an object (or import them from outside). Plopp sort of glues the two pictures together on the surface of a balloon, and then blows it up. Hilarious, but also brilliant and in some case very useful.

it makes both the sculpt map and the surface texture.

PloppSL added an SL sculpty export to basic Plopp (and took away Plopp features not useful in SL.

Google Plopp Second Life, and I think you will find it without difficulty.

How to convert 2D map into 3d object?
10-10-2007 16:07
Hi, everyone. Sorry if it is sounds like a stupid question but I am very new to sculpties.:( I made a bell using ROKURO but when I uploaded it in SL it looked like a 2D object instead of a 3D. I know I am missing something but I don't know how to make it looks more like a 3D object.
I was hoping to find the answer in help menu but didn't find anything there. I searched WIKI but it didn't really give me the anwer which I was looking for to fix my 2D bell. If you know the link where to find info or know the answer on my question, please let me know. I really appreciate any help or suggestions.:)

Since everything else is getting listed here, let's not forget AC3D
http://www.inivis.com/secondlife.html

It currently has native support for exporting Sculpties, plus the developer has created box builder and triangle builder components so you can build/export just about anything in addition to sculpties.

Here is a tutorial on how to do sculpted prims:

Intro to Sculpted Prims Video Tutorial
11-03-2007 02:25
I've just posted a video tutorial about how sculpties work in-world. This is not a tutorial about how to created the actual sculpted prim shapes, but rather a demonstration of how to configure a sculpted prim once you have the 2D image file that defines the shape.

I realized recently that many people are confused by the somewhat arcane process of using a 2D image file to represent the 3D sculpted prims. It’s a bit difficult to grasp at first, but this video demonstration clearly shows the procedure of applying a sculptmap image file to a sculpted prim in-world.

You can see the video here:
http://www.shiny-life.com/2007/11/03/introduction-to-sculpted-prims/

I've also created a video tutorial that shows how to use PloppSL to create sculpties.

Creating Sculpties From Arbitrary Meshes in 3ds Max
12-01-2007 09:51
This tutorial shows how to use Max's Projection modifier to convert a model that wasn't specifically designed to be a sculpty into one. The example shown is the one prim human head that's shown in the wiki.

Make Sculpties and texture it on the simplest way
02-03-2008 13:19
Hello,

first... my english is very bad but I hope you can understand me ;-)

So... i make sculpties with the best Software what I ever seen. It´s named Archipelis Designer. You can create very simple a 3d object from a single photo by drawing the outline. Then you need the Second Life Plugin where you can also buy on the webpage from http://www.archipelis.com/ for only 5 US$
The Software generate automaticly the sculptie textures and the texture of the object, and you can immediately upload it to SL. When you have done this, you must rezz the object and... voila... you did it!!! I am really very excited about this program and I can recommend it everyone! The price about 55 US$ is very cheap. Here 2 Photos of the results what the software can do.

Greetings

3dm2sculpt.exe works on Rhinoceros 4.0
02-11-2008 19:04
I'm still working through the Rhinoceros 4.0 Training Manual Level 1 tutorials. But I was anxious to try out a sample sculpty. So I used the Glass.3dm exercise which is a rotation of an arbitrary curve.

I drag-and-dropped that onto 3dm2sculpt.exe and got a single TGA file as output. This I uploaded to SL and sure enough, it worked just fine.

Some further experimentation revealed more things which worked and others which didn't. A pipe, which tapers to zero radius near the terminus of either end generally works. Without the taper you get end caps (three surfaces versus one). And anything which twists too much back upon itself will obtain a connecting "membrane" as a sculpty.

So far I am happy with results. I am wanting to learn, however, how to provide these sculpties textures so that a single sculpty may have varied colors. Anybody got a clue on that?

Addenda:

I decided to collect what I am learnin into a Rhino howto for sculpties. Find it here:

zBrush and Sculpted Prims
05-08-2008 11:41
I've just completed my second zBrush/sculpty video tutorial. This one demonstrates how you can use the zProject and Subtool features to convert any object to a sculpted prim. It also shows how you can create a baked shadow/lighting texture for your converted sculpty.

http://www.shiny-life.com/2008/05/08/convert-objects-to-sculpted-prims-with-zbrush/

My first tutorial shows my entire sculpted prim creation process in zBrush - object creation, modeling, converting, and texturing using a photo reference.

http://www.shiny-life.com/2008/02/12/video-creating-sculpted-prims-with-zbrush-3/

I've added a third zBrush to sculpty tutorial that shows how you can use zBrush's primitive shapes as starting points for your sculpties.

What about Hexagon or Carrara 5 -- anyone using these to make sculpties? if so, any pointers, particularly with Hexagon.

There is a quick and dirty tutorial on the wiki.

http://slandeara.blogspot.com/2008/05/modeling-vase-in-daz-hexagon-25.html

I am curious to try it out, as I just bought it. It also saves in common file formats (.obj, .3dm) so we may be able to use the 3dm and obj converters if you don't use the SL-specific sculpt tools to make a sculpty.
