Sculptypaint Version 0.91 alpha - released: october 19 2007

Sculptypaint is an 'offline' Sculpt creation tool you can download for; windows, macosx and linux

xs4all.nl/~elout/sculptpaint

Sculptypaint at the moment, I created it, for fast, easy and fun generation of certain types of 3D sculpt objects. If you want to build a human body etc. better use those other 3D package, to model it by hand.

Props to Yuzuru Jewell and Nand Nerd that created Sculpt creation tools, that inspired me, to explore these things as well.

Some new stuff in V.091

- Improved Arch tool, new Texture-sketch and Morph Tools
- Tons of changes, new options, buttons and bug-fixes.
- Although not 100% bug-free, the software is free to download.

Bugs:

Some people seem to have problems running it on certain systems,
- Make sure you got the Java Runtime Engine 1.6 or higher installed on your system
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp And unpack the zip file with folders intact.
- On windows Vista, make sure you run the program as administrator rights, in case it aint working.
- Loading images on linux slackware somehow doesnt seem to work?
- In case sculptypaint is running insane slow on your computer (1 frame per second ea.), please e-mail me with what OS your running it on. It seems like a processing bug on certain enviroments. Feedback appreciated.
- still seems to crash now and then loading TGA files saved in other packackage.
- You can always try to run sculptypaint from processing as well on your system, in case above suggestions seems to fail.

In case you got it working: Have fun with it!

First this is very nifty tool! The 1-prim stairs are outstanding.

It seems to work faster than most painting tools I use. Or maybe it just seems fast as compared to building in SL (with all the lag lately).

Good work! Thanks!

I've been having a lot of fun hacking away with the new version. I even loaded up Phtoshop > Filter Meister to further manipulate a few things. For example, a rock with lots of randomness to it, then twist it in PS/FM for a nifty staff dohicky thing. Cap it with a sphere and good to go. And the table with chairs that I did with Flower + Smooth.

Uber groovy.

Hehe, you beat me to making the one-prim staircase tool, I haven't even got my plan of attack down on paper. I may yet give it a go though, just to see if I can manage it.

Keep up the good work,

nand.

This tool is great :)

How do you hollow out the cylinder? I was experimenting with the Draw Width tool but only managed to hollow out the top or bottom half of the cylinder.

Sculptypaint v.08 released 6 july, updated the initial starting post at the top. (Where you can download it, and the changes for v.08)

Some comments:
> Deepack Rasmuson: it looks to be nice, but its very very slow.

The day the SL server was down 25may I started to read-up on sculpties, and created a sculpt previewer the same day in processing, and somehow sculptypaint evolved next; in personal exploration of sculpties.
And yes processing with opengl is a bit slow. I can keep this software just for myself, and everyone will be wondering how i`m creating those sculpties.
I can write it in C++ openGL and sell it for big bucks on windows platform only.
But I wrote it atm all in opensource software, thats why its free to download as well, and got happy windows, macosx and linux users, using this software.
It can be slow, but just a few mouseclick can alter the sculpt dramatic.
I developed this on a pentium 3 - 866mhz, with 512meg ram. Although got a recent 6month old '60euro`s' nvidia videocard.

[edit #1]>> It seems on certain computers / os (operating systems) / platforms it seems to perform insane slow, got to figure this thing out, and feedback is appreciated to solve this.

Hollowing out the cube or cylinder, for v.07 I didn't touch the draw width tool. I prefer to draw in the Height since this keeps your shape intact.
Cube > pinch to top 1 time > draw height (putting it to wireframe can help a lot when you want manipulate the inside of hollow shapes) > extrude to top to flip it back.
But in v.08 you can just scale individual rings in the arch tool, so this makes it a lot easier.

I love it!

Blimey I spent a whole day making 1 prim stairs in wings 3d and couldn't get the staggered feature of these ones. It's so easy and the stairs look great!! So easy to save the bmp file too.

Thanks so much for making this.

Can you make a hollowing tool too? For making things like bowls and hats and stuff?

ADDED LATER: it helps to read the documentation (which I often advise my customers as patiently as possible, and now must take my own advice): tutorial shows how to make hollowed objects.

I really love the flower and stair making options.
Although I run into some minor problems not sure if its a bug or if its something I need to review in instructions.
When I saved as tga or png I have no clue where it is going and then when I experiment with the other button I think upload and tried to cancel I got hundred of windows that popped up I had to restart my computer.
No clue what happen.
I really wish there was option to save it in specific area.

I couldn't get it to work satisfactorally. I couldn't get it to display a cylinder when I selected cylinder, or some other shapes. Similarly, I couldn't exit the Open window and had to end the Java process in TM. At times, I couldn't get the UI to display selected tools.

I'd like to play around with it as it seems a simple solution for basic sculpties. But, I can't get past what seem to be bugs. Anyone have some suggestions? I've installed the latest Java engine.

It took me almost a month for the next release.. but Sculptypaint v.09 is out.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~elout/sculptpaint/

I hope you can run it on your system, and have fun with it! Updated the first 2 starting post on page 1, in case you want to readup about changes.

I got to thank, all the people that supported me; members of the 'Sculptypaint' group, people that donated me some L$ to continue this project. People that suggested me new ideas and implementations, bug reporters, creative people and builders that created amazing stuff with it, I never thought about. And the bloggers that linked to my software (Torley Linden etc.) And people on the forums, that spread the word.

And especially I like to thank skyhighatry.com for supporting me, the last few weeks, to keep this still open-source and free to download.

Still Got a big wishlist of things to implement in the next version(s). Somehow I created this really quick in just in 2 months time, now I`m thinking to rewrite it soon so it may evolve into a much more fun and 'solid' working; easy to create 3D package in the near future. But you got to know, i`m an artist that loves to code.. And never made a serious application in my life yet. So would love get into contact with coders; how to rewrite it, how to put it on sourceforge etc. Since dont have experience with that yet.

Very nice! One suggestion though, add loading targa format files, as all my sculpties are in this format. Good work :)

It took some time, but released Sculptypaint v.091 today.

xs4all.nl/~elout/sculptpaint

Changed/updated the starting post on page 1 of this thread.

New:
Texture-Sketch
Here you can roughly draw on the texture to pinpoint certain areas of a sculpty, best is then is to finetune it in your favourite paintpackage, since that will go much faster I guess.
Texturesketch got a kind of independend seamless texture generator as well. For generating 256*256 or 512*512 seamless textures.

Morph tool
Morph between two 3D models.
Further the lock-points tool in the morph tool can be very powerfull, since you can control what points not to morph, or locked points won't smooth while other points do.

Arch tool got improved as well.
Translate / Scale or Rotate individual rings now.
Mirror on Y-axe, and select multiply rings.

Interaction design a bit smoother as well, since now you easy can select a number of points with 1 mouseclick in the point and morph tool.
Check my tutorials for more details and tips

Sculptypaint is a personal experiment I started june this year, and somehow got out of hand. Hope you can run the software, and have fun with it!

Very nice Cel, you beat me to the punch on the realtime paint tool :)

This version also fixes the delay problem I had with the file/open dialog, yay!

Hi.

I really want to try this but I can't make it work on my Mac. I followed the instructions, although I don't really understand where in the "Terminal" you enter the text. The only result I get is,

Last login: Fri Oct 19 10:53:24 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
You have mail.
[Mac-G4:~] admin% chmod +x sculptypaint091.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub
chmod: sculptypaint091.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub: No such file or directory
[Mac-G4:~] admin%

I get the same "No such file or directory" no matter where I paste the "chmod +x sculptypaint091.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub" text.

As a suggestion, it would really help less knowledgeable people like me if the instructions were more detailed, or had simple steps to follow. For example, I don't know what you mean by "use the Terminal on Mac OS X, and from this directory, type the following:" Am I supposed to copy file to the Terminal directory and then enter chmod +x sculptypaint091.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub? That doesn't seem to help.

Can someone *please* explain how to use Terminal or what is meant by these instructions? Thank you. :)

This application was created on Windows, which doesn't
properly support setting files as "executable",
a necessity for applications on Mac OS X.

To fix this, use the Terminal on Mac OS X, and from this
directory, type the following:

chmod +x sculptypaint091.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub
