lol ... what about 10, or 20 per prim?!, as my good professor once said : there are many that dream the most amazing things at night, but few who stay up at night and can actually do them. Maybe you need to study it a bit closer ... thats not a simplistic 'plane'-type 2.5D tree with flat textures, its a fully formed 3D shape which gives it a much more realistic quality. Well, we're drifting off the sim discussion again - but please let me know if you ever succeed - specially as it sounds we're going to need a lot of these.

I have the basic model set up, 3D trees, now you please send me a 10 tree prim. You have no clue what you are talking about.
And your professor is not that smart either, I dreamt it up at night, correct, but I build my things during the day when my brain works.
No point in talking to you anymore I guess..... so I won't..We're spamming this blog

You think THIS is all of 'The Past'?

Congratulations on living through your first The World Is About To End Crisis, brought to you by Linden Labs.

These are the ones I remember since being here, in no particular order
* The end of Dwell (This was supposed to kill camping and clubbing by making an already difficult business model tougher)
* The end of DI and education bonus (bit more minor, but people felt betrayed)
* End of Telehubs (not a world-ender but people were feeling betrayed. Some were compensated financially for, hello, staking a large financial claim in land that wasn't guaranteed to hold its value over time. And people STILL do this)
* Doubling the island purchase and tier cost (It was feared this would destroy the land market. Land market survived but purely creative projects took a beating. They did it for the corporations, and they tipped off their favorite land barons to empty the land store of 'old' rate regions. Thoughtful. BTY, where ARE all these corporations now? The price hike was partially reversed.)
* Gambling ban (Necessary but we're STILL feeling the economic hurt)
* Banking ban
* Copybot (Supposed to be The Big One about this time in 2006. This one even had me a little worried, but life went on)
* Unlimited free accounts (Hi you guys! Destroying the world yet?)

I swear there's a big one I'm missing but I can't think of it. Anybody from further back have any good ones to share?

I've been hearing about the immanent death of Second Life (Has Netcraft confirmed it? No. That's why we're FINE) for a bit more than two years, and others have been hearing about it a lot longer. But we're still. here. This too shall pass. This lovely shared illusion of ours is showing itself to be more resilient than some of the people who make it up, no matter how hard the parent company or the residents try to hurt it.

U most really think ppl still want to give their money away to LL. Sure... Everytime i go to the bathroom a 50 dollar note comes out of my butt.
2 years ago u didnt have others alternatives like now (at least near future alternatives).
When some good comunitys start to disappear, well... U still will have mainland to go play around.

Felix, so you won't mind if tomorrow they say you can keep your private island at the same tier of $295, but instead of 15,000 prim you will now only have 3000 prim, OR you can only have your island prim reduced to 10,000 prim, pay $500 US tier monthly AND your island will now have an unnamed script limit, and you can now only have half the number of avatars on your island. That would be perfectly fair and reasonable to you, yes?

Of course I would mind. I would be very upset if they did that. But I would have to then decide if that is an expense I want to continue in SL. I provide my island as a place to go for the public. I make no profit and it comes out of my pocket so it would be a tough situation to be in and I do empathize with everyone affected by this, but in the end LL is a business out to make money. If they someday decide to price me out of island ownership, then I will have to do what is necessary for my particular financial situation.

I almost went into the openspace rental business myself, but my instincts said I shouldn't. They had a "to good to be true" feeling about them, and when something is too good to be true, it usually ends up not being that good.

PR exercise gone wrong?
11-11-2008 01:00
Over the weekend and yesterday i have been surprised as to how many friends in sl have been affected by the OS ban. We own an OS and will (grudgingly) accept the eventual price hike of 67%, but we can afford it. So many of our friends can't. So they are leaving or moving.

Has LL considered what this does to their reputation? Yes, SL is a game, and a business, but there are people who now put LL in the same category as bailiffs .. "LL is the company that made me move my house". What a reputation to have!

LL really have to hope that they get a large influx of new people, because they have lost the trust of those affected, directly or indirectly, by the OS debacle .. a valuable commodity if you want to retain customers. I suspect that the OS process will mean people will much more readily jump ship when something new/better comes along.

As a money making enterprise LL may have got it right. As a PR exercise, .. LL .. you really REALLY got it wrong!

But... Hey!!! If u have 10.000usd to give away, refound ppl back!!! If you are trying to look like the good samaritan first do the right thing.

Geez we give away a 3rd of that in our daily contest. If tripling it would solve this problem then we would have done it already :)

In that case 100 prims would also be enough for what LL wants with an OS. And BTW I (like everyone else bar a few LL-bunnies) have been shouting all along for more prims on the base product - why have yet another product.
It's beyond me how they came up with 750 prims for the "Nerf sim" packaging. There are some useful things one can do with 750 prims--as I've already mumbled, it can make a quite acceptable residence (if that's allowed--the jury is still out), and a decent enough playground for all but the most concentrated sporting events on water or land. (I think I understand why it's a problem
  • for United Sailing Sims, and that sucks, but for less organized, "Club Med" style boating, it should work.) But 750 is, to put it mildly, disappointing.

The underlying problem is use of prims as a proxy for so much of what does affect sim/system/network load, whereas the prims themselves create very little load. We have a "prim economy" because they're easy to count, not because they really measure resource use.

It's easy to fall into the same trap, though, arguing (for example) that the $75/mo sim should have 3/5 the prims of a $125/mo sim. That's nonsense, but it appeals to the same fallacy as the prim limits themselves.

Decisions about pricing and packaging are really *Marketing* decisions, informed by technical considerations, but ultimately about fitting those performance effects to a notional demand curve. I just think that on this one, LL Marketing got it all wrong.

It's kind of interesting that LL chose (or was forced) to deviate from the "prim economy" more than usual here, also constraining avatar count and some TBD metric of scriptiferousness. At least those two have direct impact on some aspects of sim resource utilization.

Assuming there's some correspondence between those limits and actual resource utilization, it would almost make sense if Development were saying that the new per-core loading schemes were:
    a) 3 Homesteads, or
    b) 2 Homesteads and 2 Openspaces, or
    c) 4 Openspaces.

Or maybe "b" is 1 Homestead and 3 Openspaces. But they're not saying that, at least not yet. Maybe that's a contingency plan.

But what's really needed (as many have said) is some direct way of controlling the impact of one sim's crappy performance on all the other sims on its core, its server, and the grid. Counting prims, avatars, and scriptociousness as proxies ends up making each product packaging much less flexible.

And that's why I've argued for supporting the ability of Estate owners to pin their own sims to same-owner cores and servers, perhaps in exchange for a price break or (better) relaxed resource limits. I understand that LL sees this as a problem for availability: great chunks of an Estate go dark all at once if a server has a hiccup. But I'm really not sure Estate owners think that's such a big deal.

    __________
[* EDIT: The problem, I meant, not just of prim count but overall constraints on the Openspace packaging--in this case avatar limit, as I understand it anyway.]

Qie, I think this just illustrates how little the typical resident digests information, for some reason people read the Linden Prize as being L$10,000 and not US$10,000 and even then it gets diluted even more down to just US$10!!! Could be the same reason most residents don't understand usage on sims, because they don't read the manual.

thats 10,000 usd not 10,000 linden

like 2.5 million linden depending on rate but concidering they print their own money it actually costs them nothing at all..... in fact they will make 3.5 % of the real money as you try to convert it to dollars 8) bad enough the governement will want 45% of your prize money... LL wants 3.5% too

but yea .. concidering they pull in 187 million linden in LL taxes per month ...... vs paying out 133 million in stipids.... you would think they could affors paying out 20 or 30 milliohn linden or so. its not like they didn't just pull that much out of circulation in the month of october alone.

Ohh and if people wonder where i pull my numbers from, its pretty easy.. go to secondlife.com and click on the link that says

    More statistics...

You will find the base numbers for almost any aspect you want to figure out... thne its just do the math.

Either it's real money or "funny money"--the 3.5% isn't any more real than the other 96.5%. This is horribly off-topic, but unless Supply Linden completely abrogates responsibility for managing the LindeX exchange rate, s/he'll have to sell L$2.5 million less, or buy-up L$2.5 million (unlikely), or somehow otherwise raise demand by L$2.5 million (very difficult). All those scenarios cost LL real money. (Hmm... maybe the current increase in L$ value--caused by Supply's greatly reduced selling--is in preparation for that L$2.5 influx.)

Katt, can you pass me the popcorn, please?

    Say what?

    As per the blog
    From: someone
The Linden Prize will award one Second Life Resident or team with $10,000 USD, paid in Linden dollars,

10,000 usd paid in linden to an in game account. to get that 10,000 USD you must sell the 2.5 mill in linden dollars and LL takes 3.5% in the exchange rate. Now since they put a USD ammount on the prize its a taxable winning i believe, meaning if yoru in the states the government will want their piece reguardless if you sell the linden or not.

as far as where the 2.5 million comes from

loook at L$ Sources and Sinks here http://secondlife.com/whatis/economy_stats.php

In october 187,687,609 linden dollars where taken in by LL and only 133,106,245 paid out

they could pay out 40 million linden and not phaze the economy one iota

as far as slow exchange .... only 81,272,717 lindens got exchanged yesterday and an avrage of 76 million every single day.

Oh, my prof was very smart. Where can I see it? You never sent a sample, is it inworld ... or still a dream?

I'm often hanging out at MO Island - which is where I saw the original 1 prim palms at the store. Yesterday I saw your partner - Coventina Dalgleish looked like purchasing some there - so hopefully you studied them well enough .. but still i don't see any result.

As for spam, who cares? This blog is dead anyway on the main topic. Thousands of posts and no reply. But I do understand if you don't want to talk anymore on this ;)

    WaterRegion - Water Only - 1000 Prim Region - 65536sq.m.
$10.00 initial purchase Plus 1st month tier of $9.00
Then each following month just $9.00 per month.

What do you use the prims for if it is water only? Or can you use them for corals and fish?

you could easly do 10 trees on a single prim.. they will not be 3 d but you can do it LOL hell you can make an entire forest if you want... rather then wasting 75 buck per sim on gound you're not allowed to use you may as well just put a giant panoramic picture up on all 4 sides of your main sim with a scenery of your choice... would save 600 bucks a month rather then getting 8 opensims to surround your sim with 8 sims to get the same effect.

Oh i'm so weak for letting me drag myself through more answering......

yes it is in world, no it is not ready, shows once more you are clueless.... it takes a bit longer than the one to two hours i put into it by now, your idol with the nice 3 palm prim didn't build that thing overnight either. And if I were to send you the tester, I already know your answer:

"This doesn't look as good as the other tree"

No it is not ready yet. I simply laid out the texture and seperated the vertices of the model. I said it can be done, it can be done. 6 3D trees, one prim. I'm pretty sure the palmtree "dude" as you call him can make one aswell, there isn't only one descent sculptor/builder in SL, there are plenty.

Yes my partner bought the tree, we have nothing against it, but I started on the trees before she did buy it. And no I haven't examined it. That takes the fun out of building, I don't want to copy his trees, I want to make my own items.
