Some trees are scripted too and lots of scripted trees can cause lag as well. And Since I am on trees, all trees and plants are transparencies. Every 512 transparent texture is around a 1 meg file size, 1024 clear images come to around 4 megs per image. a 512 JPG is around 50 k .
Where are you getting those numbers from? Alpha only adds 25% to the size of an image, not 2000%

Commenting on the proposed "Homesteads", I think it's pretty much ridiculous to maintain the requirement to already own a full island before an open space island can be bought.
At least not for the Homestead product. I agree.

Seems pretty damn clear to me, people are nitpicking.
That's because the whole idea of "living" some place in SL is nitpicking.

There's no difference between me and a couple of friends hanging out all day around a scenic fireplace in an OpenSpace and in LostFurest dAlliez. But because I can set my home point at the latter location, I "live there"?

The only "home-like" thing there is that sometimes there's a pose stand in an underwater cave.

What if I remove the pose stand from that parcel? Does that make it not a "home"?

No Manners, No respect - Disgusting.
11-10-2008 07:56
I just peeked in to see what was happening with this thread and whether any Linden had actually bothered to reply to anyone....silly of me really. When you have kids and are teaching them to grow up as decent people, one of the most important things is to teach them to treat people with respect and have good manners - I guess the parents of the ever elusive Lindens didn't bother to teach this to their offspring.

Lindens..your lack of manners is frankly disgusting...and your lack of respect is something that will now leave a permanently bad taste in the mouths of all those that exist in your virtual world. Nice work.

Delayed response because RL was in the way

You aren't there yet. If you needed to do some SMALL price increases to warrant the increased use of these type of sims to support them that would be understandable but you went wwwaaayyy too far.

If this were "real life", to me, it would be the equivalent of purchasing a piece of real estate at a certain price then having the first owners come back and say, "Oh, we didn't charge enough the first time so we're going to abruptly raise the price, take it or leave it, but we've arranged it so you can still pay more and get less if you consider this other new piece of real estate, which is what you have, but we're going to change the zoning laws and homeowner association rules take it or leave it" [e.g. type of sim, no. of avatars, scripting, etc.]. Oddly enough it also sounds a bit like an adjustable rate mortage and why our RL housing market and economy are in such a rotten state right now.

To support Linden Labs and their efforts I'm a paid member but I've never taken much, if any, advantages of that subscription. The small stipend I get back each month won't even hardly cover a nice pair of shoes anymore, so I think when my next renewal comes up that I won't bother. I can still enjoy SL as a free member - for now.

25% of a tga .. not a jpg

Download a alpha TGA from second life and save it to hard drive, see for your self.

better still make an apha TGA thats 1024 x 1024 upload it to sl.. now download it back to your hard drive... you will see that no matter what the original file size. second life will return a 4 meg tga file.

I dumped one of the 2 OS's I have yesterday and the guy from linden lab was so friendly lol and they did it in less than 30 mins LOL, which means they really dont care and i bet this is their plan ....less people to deal with and more cash from the rest.

Of course. Now that all their new hardware purchases are paid for, they can create Nautilus II for the new legion of Rental Barons who scoop the plots in auctions, turn around and rent them to the average person who couldn't snipe them in time.

Isn't SL so much fun these days? The business aspect really kills the original intent at times.

What happened to creating and sharing for the sake of artistry and beauty and fun? Oh wait, those words are falling into disuse here.

Time will breed some very nice competition methinks.

OpenLife will be another year in beta. And while SL is still in beta, I do hope that OpenLife is somehow able to step up the timetable a bit to truly be a viable option for those wanting to jump ship.

Yeah....I've already jumped to Avatar Hangout. There's growing pains and other things to deal with when you're pioneering but it's to be expected. Overall, I'm pleased with the progress there.

Textures are stored internally and transferred to the client as JPEG 2000, and the size of the file after converting it from JPEG 2000 to TGA by your client after it fetches it from the server or cache is completely irrelevant.

well you know who they are going to go after next when they lose half their revenue from OSs.......next thing you know, private estates will go up to $500 a month and mainland monthly land allowance will go up 50%.

it wont be a surprise anymore.... and you are so optimistic to say 50% only lol

OpenLife has made some great strides in the last few weeks, there is granted still work to be done, upgrades to the servers and login system code, some stability issues, but they are raising to the chalange of the mas influx of SL users over the last few weeks. They are looking to not only match SL but out do it. KirstenLee is doing great work on the viewer, loving the R16 release and looking forward Avatar 2.0 that will give us mesh clothing with physics, physics that are actually designed to work with the grid. There is a new developer coming on soon specifically to tackle the scripting engine and make it stable, if that means eventually we wave bye bye to LSL in OLG that's would be great! Oh we already have free use of prims up to 100M and down to 0.001.

Honestly if they continue at the rate they are, I could see myself and my partner pulling the plug on SL. They already lost a large portion of potential income as we were looking at buying a private island and some open spaces just before the announcement of the price hike. Now we have our private cluster region in OLG for what LL was asking for open spaces.

OS goes poof in the middle of the night
11-10-2008 09:21
I lived on an OS, when I loged in this morning the sim, along with all my personal belongings have simple disapperd with the sim. I was advised to turn in a ticket for lost inventory. From what I can gather since I did not know the sim was to be deleated.. everything on the sim was also deleated. Im really not clear on this...live chat support was at the most not even conserned with this issue. This was frunishings , house, landscaping. 1000's of L$ worth of objects purchased with RL money. This also adds insult to injury. I hope this can help anyone that may encounter the same problem and huge loss due to ignorance of the situation...sigh.

Thanks!! I would give it serious though , I had no warning what so ever and sure no one else will also. This just pushes home the point that we really own nothing here unless it's tucked away safely in our inv. I think it also speaks volums about the attitude of LL's about the little person playing the game.

Abandon Ship?
11-10-2008 09:36
It does seem that there has been a decrease in OpenSpace sims... either by conversion to full sims or outright abandonment back to LL. This is resulting in the gathering of all the poor performing OpenSpace sims together onto one host(s).

The Time Dilation on OpenSpace sims now (as compared to before this fiasco) is fluctuating all over the place. When sim stability degraded, one use to be able to find a nice stable host after a sim reset. Now they ALL are screwed up!

Performance on OpenSpace sims has never been that great but as the degradation escalates, even those that were willing to accept LLs grandiose plan of reaping higher monetary gains will soon vacate what is left of OpenSpace sims.

Given LLs past history with managing sim and grid stability, I believe that OpenSpace sim stability will not improve before June 2009 let alone before Jan. 2009.

I can imagine abandonment of ALL OpenSpace sims in the very near future!

I am really sorry to hear what happened to you, and LL's attitude is apalling aswell.
But LL doesn't claim back a sim without a reason. My guess is your landlord screwed you over, and it's him or her you need to go after.
Anyway, good luck, I hope you get your objects back from LL, they are somewhere on a backup server for sure.

I think it speaks volumes about your ex-landlord. There is no reason why a landlord can't return people's property before letting a sim go.

Not returned to your inventory Lost&Found folder? That's just broken. That should be part of the clearing process.

well, here is the deal too.. if the sim owner is converting the open spaces back to one sim. the 4 open sims are deleted and the one new sim is created. All 4 islands would be distroyed and a new one formed.

Now this one i cant blame LL for entirely. Its up to the estate owner to let people know whats going on with any given estate. if the estate owner did not tell you then there is part of the issue.

However these islands are backed up. it is very possable if you get a hold of support fast enough you could get yoru things returned to you, all they would need to do is spawn a backed up instance of that island and return all your items.

The support people are good folks, i think they can find a way to assist you.

Best of luck with it.

If the sim has just been closed, it may be likely you could ask in support for it to be reopened so you can go back in and claim your stuff back, have heard this being done before, but don't actually know the in and outs of such a procedure.

Edit: Jini beat me to it.
