This has nothing to do with pricing, Barb. This has to do with a company changing the definition of a service they sold after they accepted setup fees for it. Worse, after they wooed people in by doubling the prims and halving the price.

They are changing the cap on avatars, they are changing how these sims can be transferred. This isn't just a small price change, either, like for inflation or cost of operation. $75 to 125 is a PUNITIVE increase for sims after they said openly in the knowledgebase that they CAN be used for these activities.

You are most certainly the advocate for the devil in this case. LL has the ethics of the devil.

From: someone
"We are going to retain the Openspaces product at its original price point and its original intended use (forest, water, etc.). "

That is a LIE. The knowledgebas said, and I QUOTE:

"While they can and have been used in other ways, they are not recommended for any other purpose."

They sold them stating that they can be used for other perposes, they just might be slow doing so. That is not the same as saying "You'll be abusing this if you do it and we might have to take action".

i have always known it was for light use.

For those business owners looking for opportunities to expand their markets....There is definitely something worth considering in the growth of SL alternative worlds....I can see that the OpenLife world is ripe for development and the marketing of quality goods and services will be a big business as soon as their $$ system goes up...

Let's face it...business owners that are not looking at ways to grow represent the ones that will soon by dying...

Not only openLife....there's also Avatar hangout that is desparately needing some business owners. I'm actually setting up a little shopping center on my region for business owners to come and set up shop there......for free. With all these other grids popping up.......it's going to be very hard for people to stay with SL other than to grab full perm freebies from xstreet so they can download and transfer them to an alternagrid.

To those that are considering abandoning their Openspace sims due to the price increases...

Why not sell them for the $100 transfer fee to another resident that has less than a set of 4 that wants to use them for an upgrade to a full sim? or even to use as a homestead...

This would:
* save the resident $150 - thus depriving LL $150
* deprive LL the opportunity to use or resell them.

Paulie, im sorry about your situation. currently i'm building some sims for CORAworks to help people just like you work for a living in SL in a real office. If you want more info, please IM Coraworks Magic.

I just want to try to ease your worries on this. Opensims were originally created and intended for light use. if you are using this for light use then there will be no changes. if you have been using it as a full sim, or as a large rental business or mall, then you have been taking much more than you should, and paying much less than a regular sim.

so, if you use opensim as it was intended, light use, the price will not go up for you, but as M said, you need to contact concierge to keep your bill in this category.

As who intended? So using an opensim's 3750 prims is abuse? Or how about using them EXACTLY as they were envisioned, marketed, and sold by the truckload.

That is not abuse, fellow Residents...that is taking a product to it's fullest potential...

Taking much more than you should, not at all. Simply using what was offered as it was designed. Nothing more...nothing less.

And we the Residents will take SL to it's fullest potential..either with, or in spite of, Linden Labs. This is our World...our Community...our Homes...our dreams...and for some...their income, and...most importantly...for those such as Paulie...their way to live a Life they are otherwise unable to do so.

THAT, my fellow Residents, is what SL is and can be...WE are what makes SL so grand...never forget that.....

Chaos Mohr cites it in post "More than just 'tacit' approval for OS usage". It is my understanding that they have changed it now that they were hoisted on their own petard.

Other people have pointed out that sims that LL bragged on were used for way more than just "light" use. Obviously they knew and accepted these uses. It is obvious, at least to me, that use isn't really the issue, rather it is them changing a service to be more beneficial to them after the receipt of non-refundable setup fees.

While I clearly have some sympathy with that argument, claiming that there will be NO changes for someone who has been using an OpenSpace for "light use" is at best disingenuous.

On the other hand I think you are also exaggerating. They claim that they discovered that the service was costing them significantly more than they expected, and they acted to cut the loss. I don't see any reason to call them liars.

Every time LL runs into trouble, they villify the user. That's what the ARC is about. SL slow? Don't blame LL, witchhunt people based upon their ARC. Don't like the price increase? Blame places like the USS, who were using openspaces before and after their price decrease/prim increase with no complain from LL.

This is a farce. I am so ashamed of myself and depressed that I ever believed this could be "our world".

Liars lie. They claimed to be selling a 3750 prim openspace for $75 a month, and then a month later they tell you that it really won't be that, it will be 750 prims and very strictly limited, or you'll have to pay $125 and still be limited in ways. They accepted a ton of setup fees and now they are trying to backpeddle and swap what they sold with far less attractive services.

That makes them liars. They used the word "can" in the knowledgebase, now they are saying "can't" by restricting what they said we "can" do. That makes them liars.

Defend them if you want.

Thanks LL you got me and countless others I'm sure to walk away form there investment. Thanks for the con job, and instilling so much trust. I guess I should have stayed with the original opinion of SL on my first day "this is just a game" yep a game and you played us all.

Oh don't misunderstand. My point is that we see what the company is about. I said it after they did the OS price change #2 only 3 weeks after change #1. My point is if people need to vent about how wonderful their sims are how horrible they feel I'm all for it....I've vented and also feel dejected. But it isnt going to all of a sudden change the company that LL now clearly appears to be.

They said they were CHANGING it, which they reserved the right to do. That might be a bad business decision, and unfair, and lots of other things that I'm not going to debate because I don't disagree with them, but saying "we're now changing the OpenSpace product over the next six months" is not a lie.

A sad day for Second life
11-06-2008 09:12
I took the ban on gambling and then the addition of VAT but never has anything made me feel like simply uninstalling sl and not coming back - until i read your response to the current openspace situation. Who wants to pay 75 dollars a month for a few trees, a dolphin and a cardboard cut out of a boat cause lets face it you wont have the prims for a proper one. As a current owner of 3 openspace sims which are used for low level rentals i will be returning each on to LL as my tenants will not be prepared to stomach the price rise in July when it goes up to $125. This is no dramatic change in their previous suggestion merely a delay which they have tried to disguise by not putting the full extent of the limitations on the blog. Cant say i blame them id be trying to hide the details if i was them as well. If i stay and its a big if , i will not be renting on the mainland as LL obviously want us all to - personally id rather sleep on a park bench somewhere - except there wont be any park benches come january - too many prims. Has anyone got a cardboard box...

And before anyone takes issue with my saying "a month later" in the above, I know people who purchased openspaces in October. At the very most, it is only a few months, as they started this push with the repricing and doubling of prims in March.

No, no, no. They have now shifted us to different services altogether. You cannot reserve the right to take people's deposits and then give them other services than the ones they paid the setup fees for. That's like me reserving the right to sell you a defective or dangerous product. You can't indemnify yourself for an illegal or negligent act with terms of service.

This is totally unacceptable and I find it very difficult to believe that you could defend it. LL is not living up to what they offered in March. They are not fit in my opinion to trust with any future offer unless they totally cast off this stain.

I cant get past one issue here......
11-06-2008 09:16
You sold me a sim with 3750 prims, and now you tell me I cant use most of them? Someone in this group must have elevated from virtual world to dream world. What are you thinking? How can you do such a thing? Why do I have 3750 prims if I cant use them? If we can't come to terms on this one, I honestly don't give a rat's prim what you do with the rest of your proposal. This is simply larceny. How about plan "B": LL just buys back all the open space sims at the original purchase price. Then you can take all your cold CPUs and find some other suckers willing to let LL pick their pockets. The Corporate Culture of LL never ceases to amaze me. Do you steal each other's lunches too?

The 3RG (3rdrockgrid.com) Looks very attractive with prices a fraction of S/L and a currency too. It looks very promising and if enough of us go there especially developers etc this grid could be something very special at a price most people can afford especially as set up fees are only $25 for a sim, If LL wanted us to migrate to another world they could not have done a better job, Second Life? more like RIP.

35,000 members in www.openlifegrid.co as well now and currency coming soon, it was delayed to allow people to upload content for free ;)

Why would they need to? When they get low on spending money they can just cut the price of sims by half, get a million bucks in setup fees, then take it all back and give us a fraction of what we thought we were getting once they have enough lunch money to last them years.

From 3500 to 750?
11-06-2008 09:20
Something I just cant understand: why originally offer 3500 prims if they expected people use just 750? Is it abuse use the limit we were supposed to previously bought? It is not a big deal this upgrade of fees in parts. If there is someone abusing here, it is LL, they are abusing our costumers rights offering a product that is supposed to be "for light use" apparently with some decrease of prim limit and after, saying we are abusing when we just use what we PAID to use.

So, about the only thing that changed was the names and the time table.

The new model of OpenSpace Sims and Homestead Sims is actually a nice one (although they are lacking an alternative inbetween) - if it had been implemented upon the introduction of the original OpenSpace sims.
Doing this now is changing the rules.

So we are back to square one again: A lot of people paid a lot of money to setup their OpenSpace sims on the basis of a fixed monthly fee.
Now you are changing that fee. Many people wont be able to afford that new fee and would never have invested the intial setup money.

If Lindens want to go ahead with their new sim model, fine with me. But either give back the setup fee to those people that wish to abandom their OpenSpace sim due to the pricing change or exclude the OpenSpace Sims that were set up prior to your price change announcement.

Those are the ONLY two satisfactory options you have, Linden Labs ! Everything else will deliver a demoralising blow to many of your most dedicated residents that may very well lead to the ruin of Second Life.

The world that you claim to hold so dear is in decline ! You know it, we all know it. The industry has pulled out. the media is giving up, the hype is over. Other virtual worlds are on the rise. Can you really risk alienating your residents with this devastatig blow ?

Crossroads, Linden Labs...

We all know that it's "Your World", not ours - despite your catchy claim.

Now it's your choice, too.
