I checked it out and apparently the issue isn't *just* the scale, it's that everyone would be stuck with snow, want it or not -- great for some, very annoying for others.

Okies.

That and the fact that now that the land has been broken up and distributed into parcels, the job now requires changing each property over. Dont think they caught your hint ;)

sigh. All that sitting on the sidelines for three big events for nothing. Welp, I'm definitely interested in the snowman building contest. Does that include photoshopping one's own textures in that time or all materials from SL and the library? Or should I wait for the announcement...?

Holocluck you can change terrain at sim level not parcel level. If I have understood what you said correctly, if not apologies.

Yet more answers...
12-03-2008 17:18
Hiya peeps--

Many more answers here for you!

@49- Shai, YES! We know you are sporting swimsuits, not snowsuits. I think it would be great to have at least one hot, southern-hemisphere entry come in. But if you apply, make sure there is some reminder evident at the landing point that you guys have "Winter" in the "Summer". Just statistically, most SL residents live up north, and do tend to forget the difference. Remind us! That's what this event is about; December traditions all around planet earth.

@54- Rose, may I just say that the Saturnalia sounds super cool? Am looking forward to seeing different traditions than the ones I'm familiar with.

@63- Zack, If you are going to have a wonderful winter build from the 19th to the 5th, with Orthodox Christmas on the 6th, you should enter anyway. I don't see why we can't send people your way for an extra day. You would still need to meet the other guidelines for being in the tour, but one extra day is probably not a big deal. If you want to talk about it, ping me.

@73- Broccoli, you asked if "we" are planning to celebrate Christmas. I assume you mean Linden Lab. I don't really know. If we do, it will be because some Linden or other has stepped up to do something for it. Minerva Linden was threatening to show up as Santa, Does that count? At any rate, I suspect that a number of the featured resident locations will be throwing events that day. We'll have to see what gets proposed.

@85- Blanche, if you have room to do something significant there, sure! You can use rented land! As long as it's about Winter, you can enter it.

@87- Kara, you guys know more about this than I do!

@89- Lesley, generally nominating other people's builds is frowned upon... but if something was *really* awesome....

@95- Holocluck, DO NOT DESPAIR! Second Life's Birthday party is coming up next June. We give out building plots for that event! Unfortunately, June be upon us before you know it... or at least upon me before I know it....

Many of you have asked about whether your nearby commercial enterprises disqualify you from the Big Tour. No, not really. It all depends on the specific case. How much, how far-- does it "feel" commercial or not really? It's going to be a gut-level judgement for the Linden judge-people. So, if you truly feel that your location should qualify as "non-commercial" even if there is some commerce nearby, feel free to enter it. We will take a look.

FINALLY-- I hope to write up the entry instructions for this tomorrow. Send me angry IMs if I don't ;-) The hold-up is that I have to figure out the best way, first!

My little cottage
12-03-2008 21:20
I have a little cottage that I setup for winter in Caledon Highlands. Its not a big place like those that you all post. But its warm and homey.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Caledon%20Highlands/98/94/25

I call the place 'Twilight Cottage'. So that means it will looks best at night when the lights turn on automatically. With the cold winter night, warm light pouring out of the windows and a pot of steaming noodle on the stove. Armchairs and stool place near the fireplace where you can sit and chat with your friends. You will love the place.

It is open to public but I disable build as I need to maintain 30 free prims to allow people to sail along the river just in front of it.

This year Desmond has place a very nice icy ground texture on the entire sim.

My Winter Project

It's winter on Aintree Willow - I'm looking forward to applying to include it in Winterfest (oops I meant Winterfaire). In honour of a major international athletic competition coming to my city in 2010 - the focus is on winter sports, skating and sledding. I hope people enjoy it - it has a quasi bobsled thingie included. I might have to come up with a better name for it though. :)

My desk calendar shows that winter is coming. LL says winter is coming. Conclusion, based on LL's past, my calendar must be wrong!

As it is, I worry that the current skin flap is going to knock anything we do out of the running.

I'm fairly excited about this. A friend of mine saw my island and urged me to enter, so when the application is available next week? I will be finding one and applying.

I plan on entering my Asian Gardens, though right now they're in the middle of a month+ long transition into the depths of winter. Just hope that whichever Linden gets around to checking my place out will realize that winter usually is a slow event. :)

This week, snow is just starting to pile up...covering the grass (yay, Mainland grass is so much fun to try to cover without ruining landscaping *sarcastic grin*). Next week, the snow should have won out over most of the grass. Christmas Week, the water should be starting to freeze and no grass should be in sight (*fingers crossed*) and New Year Week everything should be frozen over and snow covered.

All times approximate though, given how many little details I keep sidetracking myself with. :)

Southhaven Seal Sled Racing
12-05-2008 02:59
We are celebrating winter by doing something which is uniquely Canadian - Seal Sled racing. We have completely iced in our land of Southhaven and constructed a multilevel seal sled racing course using virtually the entire land surface of the sim. The sleds go like scoot and there are sharp turns, tilted ramps, rough ground, ice holes, many jumps and two huge death defying jumps.

We have a race timer with an automated start barrier that is scripted to post the race results on a large scoreboard for the benefit of the audience. The Seal Sled racers are free, copyable and temp rezzing so they self delete if you go off sim (which you will) and not cause littering.

There are regular sleds for humans, special sleds for tinies and even a sled that lets you take a passenger. We are part of the Elf Circle group and have donation jars out and seasonal decorations with all proceeds going to the Elf Circle Holday Charities fund. Several formal race events with prizes are planned for this month.

All peaceloving visitors are welcome. A cautionary note though ... we are PG lands - No nudity - No weapons - No slave play allowed. Our security force is the Elf Circle Guardians who have the ability to ban people from all our elven sims

No animals are harmed in this event.

No snow in Los Angeles -- I guess I'll have to sit this one out :)

Too true, no snow in Los Angeles, I'm afraid. That's why I decided to make my own
little winter in SL. My hat too is in the ring

My forest didn't take that long to do, other than making sure where a fall tree or shrub came out, a winter tree or shrub went in. There aren't toys there. There are no sleds or skis. There are no jolly snowmen smiling in frozen glee. But there are animals. Every place you look you will see a wolf, a fawn, a badger, a squirrel, a moose, a mockingbird, a fox or a meadowlark somwhere in addition to many other species of animal and bird. And with the coming of winter each animal has a cave, a den, a burrow, a thicket or a nest to weather the winter and stay cozy and warm. And the trees come from Bliss, from Heart, from Botanical Gardens and a few I have picked up along the way at smaller vendors. There is a dirt path through this forest and if you want to come and walk in quiet introspection where you can almost taste the iron cold, or see your breath when you walk, then Innishfree is the place to visit...and its open to the public, and all are welcome...it always has been, and always will be.

BUT -- like Farley, nudity is not tolerated and anyone caught disturbing the peace will be ejected.

Skin flap?

We have a snowmobile course and skating rink, it does include a 7seas fishing area but that's just for fun too. It costs money for contests, doesn't make anything! :)

Not really traditional other than SL tradition, where else would an American & Brit get together to build something like this?

Apply for Listing in the Winterfaire Grand Tour
12-05-2008 15:30
How to apply to be listed in the Winterfaire Grand Tour.

Hi Everybody!

First, Thanks to Equinox Pinion for gently reminding me to write up this info and get it posted ;-)

Yes, I KNOW YOU ALL HATE READING DIRECTIONS but there are a few things you MUST do correctly if we are going to be able to find and process your submissions. I'll try to keep it simple.

To organize this tour, we are using the "Showcase" feature that resides in two handy places: in the Second Life Viewer (under the Search button) and on the Second Life website http://secondlife.com/showcase/.

<strong>First, you are going to prepare a picture. It must conform to the following guidelines!</strong>

1.) Go to your location and take a *beautiful* picture.
DO NOT superimpose any logos, text or captions on the picture. It should just be a plain picture.

2.) While you are there, create a SLURL [http://slurl.com/build.php]. Make it at the location where you want visitors to arrive! Save the SLURL for later use.

3.) Once you have your photo, CROP IT or re-size it to 500 pixels wide and 300 pixels high. If you try to submit a different shape, your application will be automatically rejected!!

--------> To repeat, crop or resize to 500 px wide X 300 px high! JPG

4.) Save as .jpeg. It MUST be .jpeg. It must be less than 100 KB.

5.) Post your picture on Flickr.

--------> Now, fill out the form.

5.) Go here: https://secure-web16.secondlife.com/showcase/submissions.php

6.) Under the "Category" dropdown, you MUST select "Other"
Sub-category= "Miscellaneous"

*********Under Language, you MUST select "English" or it will go to the wrong person!!! *********

7.) Preface your Venue Title with "WF-" so we can find it. Like this:
"WF- My Fabulous Winter Wonderland"

8.) Paste in the SLURL you made earlier.

9.) Now fill in the forum with the url of your Flickr-hosted picture. It should look something like this:

10.) Fill out the rest of the form, accept the agreement and Submit.

Now, if you've done all that correctly, your application will wing its way into our eager hands, and you will get a confirmation email.

--------> You only get to make 2 submissions in any 30-day time period, so don't be signing up your friends! It's best if they do their own signups.

Please note that we do not guarantee that we will list your venue. If your entry does not fit into the guidelines discussed here: /352/ad/295075/1.html, or if we just have too many entries, you many not be listed. We will do our best to give everyone a chance, but no guarantees.

Finally, if you are going to host special events at your build, we suggest you have a schedule sign at your landing point that also gives a notecard, so that visitors will know when to return for the fun. (Showcase is not designed for listing timed events, but it's great for getting people to your schedule sign!)

Thanks to all who enter, we look forward to seeing what you're building!

Is anyone else having any trouble with the picture format? I made it 500 pixels wide, and 300 high, saved it as a JPeg and made it so small its back to poor quality...and still can't get the fricking thing to submit...anyone have any ideas?

Greetings

Just a couple of questions, does the place has to be finished when submitting it? and are mainland plots permitted or not?

Thanks, great activity
