Where's the form? I want to enter "Snowport," the Environmental Study Center outdoor classroom of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP in SL) campus, at this SLURL:
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Dotoorak/39/79/326

It's particularly attractive at this time of year when the Long Leaf Pines are buried in snow and the Loblolly Pines have covered the sand hills with cones. It's cheery and colorful as the cardinals and chickadees flit about. Skates are available for our frozen Tadpole Pond and there are candy canes and hot chocolate to sip while doing your homework. Of course, for the serious student there are plenty of environmental learning resources inside the log cabin.

Whats the point in investing more time in builds if LL is taking all the beautiful (open space) sims away? I mean, THAT sims were beautiful and dressed up for the winter!

I ask Katt to solve that issue first, before going with this madness.

I've created a Winter '08 telepack at wikitipi.com and set it to modable.

(commercial builds welcome)

how to add locations:

- wear the wikiTiPi HUD
- TP to the places you want to add
- click on 'more' in the HUD
- log on to your account
- go to 'packs' and 'community packs'
- click on Winter '08 (opens a pop up)
- click on 'modable'
- click on the locations you want to add from the frame on the left

Winterfaire
12-01-2008 10:13
From: Katt Linden
As the Northern Hemisphere slowly tilts toward short days and cold, snowy landscapes, the mind inevitably turns to togetherness. Once again, it is time for Second Life’s annual celebration of all that is Winter.

Winterfaire is our chance to gather for long nights, blinky lights, hot drinks and gifts in mysterious boxes. We will revel in our usual traditions like the Snowman Building Contest, the wildly popular Lindens v.s. Residents Snowball Fight, and maybe most important, tour your fabulous Winter-themed builds, all around the grid.

Winterfaire will be centered around the ancient Linden mainland regions of Wengen, Voss, Zermatt and Moritz.

This year we will also be using the Showcase in the Second Life viewer and web site to direct people to privately owned lands hosting must-see winter wonderlands.

[ The Quiet, by AM Radio, one winter experience in Second Life
Note, to see the images, go to the blog, at http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/11/28/winterfaire-coming-december-19-january-5/ ]

What are the wintertime traditions in your part of the world? If you are planning a winter extravaganza in your region that demonstrates your traditions, we’d like to connect you to the Winterfaire network of locations.

Just keep these guidelines in mind when you plan and execute your winter builds: We will be looking for builds that are beautiful, well made, available throughout the event, and that present your regional sights, sounds and traditions of winter. We will bypass builds that are commercial in nature, so if you’re basically decorating your store for the season, that’s great, but it’s unlikely to be in the Winterfaire tour. Think of your build as a gift, freely given, to your fellow Residents, not as an opportunity to sell something.

As submissions come in, we will send out Lindens with snowshoes to check them out and bring back their recommendations for the Showcase.

While space in Showcase is limited, we will try to fit in as many submissions as we can, rotating them in and out during the event, giving many builds a chance to be seen.

An application for getting your build into the celebration will be forthcoming next week– til then, I’d encourage you to talk it over in the forum thread, what would be most fun? What are you planning? Are you thinking about creating a special build? hosting a holiday concert, a skating party, or something else? — Go Make It Snow!

WELL.....LETS MAKE THIS MORE INTERSTING LOL
I heard about the Live Flight Tracker
Witch made me think of this......

*NORAD Tracks Santa Web site*
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The North American Aerospace Defense Command is again getting ready to track Santa! On Dec. 1, the NORAD Tracks Santa (NTS) Web site, www.noradsanta.org, will go live and feature fun holiday games and activities that will change daily. On Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, NORAD will begin tracking Santa Claus' journey via live video feeds that begin at the following times:

3 a.m. Pacific Standard Time
4 a.m. Mountain Standard Time
5 a.m. Central Standard Time
6 a.m. Eastern Standard Time
11 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time
The Web site, designed by Booz Allen Hamilton, allows fans of all ages to get up-to-the-minute reports and streaming videos from key stops on Santa's trip around the world. Google software will output live images from NORAD's high-speed digital “Santa Cams," and Google Maps and Google Earth will follow Santa as he travels around the world. All of this information is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and new this year, Chinese. In addition, for the first time, Canada Post will partner with NORAD to ensure children around the world can send an email to Santa through the NTS Web site. The NTS program is carried out with the assistance of many corporate partners

The NORAD Tracks Santa (NTS) program began on Dec. 24, 1955, after an errant phone call was made to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The call was from a local youngster who dialed a misprinted telephone number in a local newspaper advertisement. The commander who answered the phone that night gave the youngster the information requested – the whereabouts of Santa Claus. This began the tradition of tracking Santa Claus, a tradition that was carried on by NORAD when it was formed in 1958. This Christmas marks the 50th anniversary of NORAD tracking Santa Claus as he goes around the world delivering presents.

The NTS program has grown immensely since first presented on the Internet in 1998. In 2007, the Web site received 10.6 plus million unique visitors from 212 countries and territories. In addition, the NTS Operations Center, occupied by 1,012 volunteers on Christmas Eve, answered nearly 95,000 phone calls and received 140,000 emails from families around the world.

NOTE TO MEDIA MEMBERS: Media outlet representatives interested in covering the 2008 “NORAD Tracks Santa" program, either live, taped or for periodic updates during live radio or television programming, should send their request to nnc.pa.nts.omb@northcom.mil.

For additional information, contact Major Stacia Reddish, NORAD Public Affairs, stacia.reddish@northcom.mil.

Hello, All--

Thanks for all these entertaining descriptions of your winter plans! Let's see-- there are a few questions in all this that I can answer.

Waaaay back at #3, Kara asked about getting snow texture on "the mainland". Now, I don't work in the land department, so I'm no expert, but if you mean "can Governor Linden zoom all over SL and change all the grass to snow..." I don't think that can happen. The Gov is only one person, and that's a job easily as prodigious as Santas' yearly task. So, unless I've misunderstood the question, don't be too upset if Katt comes back to report that as a no-can-do at this time.

@3- Satir, we definitely hear your complaint. And while we may not have the magic-wand cure at this moment (indeed it's part of a larger RL problem) we hope you can still enjoy other parts of SL until you feel secure in a creator role again. Many people build just for pleasure, and those are the ones who will hook into the Winterfaire network. We just want to help these builds be seen and appreciated. So, do come touring with us.

@16- Holocluk, You asked "how big is the space" and "does it count towards tier"? Zero and no;-) This event is more "distributed" than the other events Linden Lab hosts. Meaning that most of what happens will be happening on private land and we will use the Showcase to easily send people around SL to see it. So, we won't be providing land to build on with one exception-- the snowman building contest!! But that is typically a timed event-- and over in an hour or two. More details to come!

@19 thru 39- Gordon, Ciaran , etc.
Well, I'm glad we worked that out. Kidding. But thanks for leaving off the fight at 39:-)

Thank you Dusty Linden,

I felt later my message was a bit "spoil the fun" one, but was something I think it was stuck in here...

Even if you didn't show me a magic wand for the issue, your reply cheered me up, and showed me yes, you are listening, and I really appreciate that!

Thanks for the positive reply, actually it made me want to join you all there at this pretty event, because the fun of creating and the infinity possibilities that SL offers us all is what motivated me to learn so much and stick around so far :)

Best Regards,
Satir

St George Winterfest
12-01-2008 16:22
In the winter mainland sim of Larsson, the Orthodox Church of St. George awaits visitors with extensive wilderness areas to explore. Rocky outcroppings, swift rivers, deep pine forests, wolves, elk, deer and other wildlife, snowy vistas and the Northern Lights are all waiting to be discovered. While exploring visitors can enjoy St. George Church, jewel-like in its winter setting, the Pilgrim’s Chapel, Iconographer’s Hut and the St. George Library. Skate on a frozen, mountain lake and enjoy hot tea and cookies in an Alpine meadow. Listen to magnificent liturgical music, relax, and learn more about Orthodox Christian traditions as the Feast of the Nativity draws near.

Is this only open to estate/sim owners or can we build in our rental space?

I came into SL to create an area and objects for an RL/SL crossover to be used in a pantomime and got a bit carried away. I have sets built, a set building area, a stage area, and I plan to build a green room next.

Because most of this will not be used I would love to put it on show to other SL residents.

Btw, the panto is SnowWhite.com, by the CentreStage Theatre School in Limerick,

Actually, it is a lot easier than that. Just change the grass texture on the asset server.

That is a bit of a hack though, I would suggest the best way going forward with new continents would be to point to a 'dummy texture' and link that to whatever one is appropriate for the season. Maybe even a dummy texture per continent, so you could simulate the northern and southern hemispheres on different parts of the grid.

Application Information or Nomination?
12-02-2008 10:36
I know Bradder Thereian at The Riverwalk in Ganymede has already decorated for the 5th Annual Riverwalk Holidays. He has also been away from SL with some major health problems. I was actually surpirsed to see him in-world decorating-- he said it was a "tradition" he couldn't miss then crawled back to bed.

Any idea as to when and where the '08 Winterfaire Application will be posted? Also, will the property owner have to submit the application or can an area be nominated by anoher resident? I would hate to see The Annual Riverwalk Holidays tradition not included.
Thanks.

Dusty one suggestion - whilst Mainland is big - it's probably about 10 hours effort time to do it max - perhaps the Moles can help on this occasion in the spirit of festive gestures..... just an idea....

You know what I love - Linden/Residents Snowball Fight!
12-02-2008 17:27
Over the years, the Linden/Resident snowball fight has been the high point of the holiday season for me. I've been catapulted into the air with snow canons and mobbed by avatars dressed in snowsuits. Last year lots of people were using voice and all I could hear were howls of laughter as I got shot up into the air, again and again and again. I love it.

I'm an easy target so try out your snow guns on me!

I checked it out and apparently the issue isn't *just* the scale, it's that everyone would be stuck with snow, want it or not -- great for some, very annoying for others.

That and the fact that now that the land has been broken up and distributed into parcels, the job now requires changing each property over. Dont think they caught your hint ;)

sigh. All that sitting on the sidelines for three big events for nothing. Welp, I'm definitely interested in the snowman building contest. Does that include photoshopping one's own textures in that time or all materials from SL and the library? Or should I wait for the announcement...?

Textures of North Island Ice Sims
12-03-2008 08:14
The 3 North Islandia Ice /Snow Sims, EverFrost, Iceland, and Nordica have different terrain textures then the standard Snow terrain textures. These are not in our Libraries. Anyone know how to get them?

The Everfrost Skating areas and Snow Sled rezzers are seeing some pretty good action and I'd like to make sections that blend with the sim...
