HELLO!!! Not all the world is in the Northern Hemisphere...
11-29-2008 03:42
In typical Amerocentric style - you guys think that you own Christmas. What about an event which celebrates and provides the experience of, Christmas in other lands and cultures?

In Australia, we're more likely to head to the beach for a barby and beer - too bloody hot for cooked dinner.

Won't be a skerrick of snow to be seen at 5 O'Clock Somewhere - just us on the beach enjoying the sun. Shame our 2 OS sims won't be there any more to provide the fantastic view though.

I'm sure they are aware of this and hence the very first paragraph says:
From: someone
As the Northern Hemisphere slowly tilts toward short days and cold, snowy landscapes, the mind inevitably turns to togetherness. Once again, it is time for Second Life’s annual celebration of all that is Winter.

and this, which leaves it open:

From: someone
What are the wintertime traditions in your part of the world?

From what I know of Australia, most of it is relatively warm in their winter and rarely hits 0C - you have to either climb mountains or venture towards Tasmania to actually need a warm coat. I mean, they wear shorts wherever they play any of their football games. So the fond winter memories shared by many in the northern hemisphere arent even shared by most Australasians.

Also note it isn't about Christmas. It's about winter. Why not put either something which occurs in Australia during the northern half's winter or a local winter aesthetic for when you have it? If it's that sweltering where you live there right now, maybe it will have a cooling effect psychologically.

After all, creativity is about working with a liability or limitation and still expressing yourself.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Anyway I have a fond memory - and maybe at this time a desire since we no longer get real winters here. The warmth of the window. I wont say more, but that's what comes to mind at once, and for those who understand, it will make sense :)

IX Exotica in Winter
11-29-2008 04:38
IX Exotica has been reformed into a winter sim--even the ponds have frozen over for ice skating. Music on the sim isn't Christmas themed, yet, but will be as the time approaches, and there will be themed dances as well. We're a residential sim with rental properties, though, so that would probably count as commercial? At any rate, feel free to check it out.

Winterland Classic Christmas
11-29-2008 07:54
Xandi Mars and I have already opened Winterland Classic Christmas for its 3rd year. We will be having lots of events all season. Including Toystock 3, the third incarnation of our winter music festival on Dec 13 and 14. We will be taking donations to benefit Toys For Tots and UNICEF at Toystock as well as the rest of the season.

There is a lot to explore! Watch the changing of the toy guards, catch the many gingerbread men who roam freely around the sim (and eat them), skate the huge sim-wide skating pond, dance at Martini's 1950's shotgun bar, Have tea in Victorias, ride the shovel sled (watch out for the thin ice), shop the huge selection of holiday decorations, and too much more to mention. 100% of sales in the sim will be donated to Toys for Tots and UNICEF.

We only open for one month a year and just to help spread some cheer and love for our fellow SL residents during the winter holiday season. So if you get a chance stop on by and check it out and we look forward to seeing all of you who have visited in years past!

Winterland Classic Christmas:

While I'm here I'd like to pass some thanks to the following group of wonderful people who have donated time and energy this year to Winterland Classic Christmas: Marianne McCann, Robin Sojourner, Rebel Hope, RH Engel, Nebulosus Severine, Moopf Murray and Vortex Saito.

Thanks Guys!!!

Saturnalia and holiday events in the Confederation of Democratic Sims
11-29-2008 08:16
The Confederation of Democratic sims has two Roman themed sims, Colonia Nova and Locus Amoenus. We are planning a traditional Saturnalia feast and masquerade ball, with skating on our frozen rivers, dancing in the forum and mulled wine served in the Thermae to warm up from the chilly frozen sims. Our residents will be holding open houses and we are decorating with a Sun theme, in honor of Sol Invictus,(the unconquered sun, traditionally celebrated on the winter solstice, Dec. 21.) We are also sponsoring an "Owl parade" where our mascot owl is decorated by residents (like the Cow Parade) and will be on display.

We also have two alpine themed sims, Neufreistadt and Alpine Meadow, and all four sims are covered with beautiful snow. We've chosen a star theme for the alpine sims decor. Neufreistadt is a Bavarian village (originally a Linden snow sim) and will have, among other things, our soccer field flooded, iced, and turned to a hockey arena for the winter. Come join us in our sponataneous and often silly games! We will have a Holiday Ball in our Schloss, concerts of classical music in our Kirche (church) and games in the Biergarten.

The steep slopes of Alpine meadow will host skiing, sledding, snow ball fights (i hope) and even hang gliding. An interesting exhibit is on display in our Monastery.

All Second Life citizens are welcome to participate in events in the Confederation of Democratic sims (going on 5 years as a democracy in SL now) and we welcome the chance to share our projects. We'd love to be part of the Winterfaire showcase! Thanks!

Sounds like fun! I own a couple of parcels in the winter regions that I just built recently that should be perfect for this. If anyone wants a sneak peek you can come to my park in Okemo Canyon anytime. It's called "Old Stone Bridge Park" and the slurl is: http://slurl.com/Okemo%20Canyon/222/51/101

It's free and open to the public, very Christmasy :-)

Great Idea
11-29-2008 10:36
I don't have a parcel in those areas, but I'm decorating for winter and Christmas. (They are commercial, so I can't join the offical festivities.) I would like to see the empty Bay City lots get a bit of winterization.

I think it's great that LL is doing this :)

We've been winterizing Livingtree this week and will be hosting some events there. Also, there will be MUCH to do at Winterland in Del Aqua, which will be open for yet another year. :-)

I've been watching Wengen, Voss, Zermatt and Moritz. Like the Aurora effect. Hope the chairlift in Wengen gets a touch more TLC :-)

Ooo, going to visit Livingtree. Does that mean ice fishing ? :)

And I'm going to head to Wengen to look for the Aurora, but wondering if I can see it with my poor old graphics card. It's a beautiful area, though. Great for taking pictures.

Endeavour Cove - Earpoint Mainland
11-29-2008 11:50
Winter has set in at Endeavour cove mall, Earpoint, Mainland. The normally warm ocean has frozen over, and the main stage is decorated in sparkling trees and snowmen. An igloo with a fire to warm yourself by. Our skating rink is covered with a thick smooth layer of ice and free skates are available as well as several skating animations. Come ride our horse drawn sleigh with that special someone. Our Martini club is all decked out in the Christmas spirit. Stop in, relax and enjoy our own private feed of over 1400 Christmas songs, from Bon Jovi to Bing Crosby. Enjoy a hot cup of coco or your favorite spirit. Try your hand at Ice fishing at one of our several ice fishing huts with its own warm fire. Any fish you catch are yours to keep. Our vendors are also celebrating with special prices. Regular evening live music events are also featured, including Eliz Watanabe and Blue4U Nowicka starting at 8 p.m. slt Saturday nights. All this is happening under a constant snowfall over the entire sim. I encourage you to bundle up in your warm winter coats, set your time to midnight, and enjoy the lights, decorations, sounds and entertainment that we have to offer. Come to Endeavour cove to “Explore & Discover”.

This happened last year too! Such a shame that this winter festival ends just short of January 6th... Many countries celebrate Epiphany/Orthodox Christmas on this date :(

I suppose we'll just have to hold our Svetki (Russian Christmas Season) celebration during New Years like during the Soviet era.

Suggestion for next year, extend by one day!

I shall be winter-izing my Bag End around the middle of December, but since I have a commercial enterprise on one side of the property, never mind.

Yes!

But we're also redoing the whole river for skating, including a whole lot of obstacles, a hoop of fire, you name it. We're really trying to do someting fun, jes cuz it's been a rough year an - frankly - we need it :-)

I am concerned, though, that it won't be allowed to be showcased because while it is not a "winterizing our stores" there are stores elsewhere in the sim.

I have an open-space sim until the end of this year. So I'll set out my Ice World that I used last year and hope I don't get banned again over Xmas like I was last year. I'll put on a few shows. By the time January rolls around I'll be bankrupt and priced out of my sim so I guess I might as well have a good old blow-out while I can.

Oh and, BTW, to all residents out there: don't come to my shows, you won't like them... they're not hip, fashionable or trendy enough for you.

Looks great so far!

I flew around it with a hang glider the other day. Not exactly the most winterish mode of transportation, but a fun one. :)
