subject to restrictions, which may include arbitrary judgments yet to be made - they're already subject to restrictions which include arbitrary judgments, its called the ToS and the Lindens that enforce it.

That's true - but never before have people been directly asked to make a decision right now, based on how the ToS will be interpreted in the future.

From: someone

subject to unknown consequences from surrounding or related communities moving or not (eg, a non-sexual shop selling skimpy clothes does not move.. and then loses all its business because its customers did) - since when did geographical location end up being a factor to business unless you're tied directly to another shop or high traffic location? A random business on the mainland is no more or less accessible than anyplace else on the mainland.

But presumably it'll affect Search somehow as well. Will people not bother TP'ing to the store anymore on the basis that it can't be sexy because it's not on the Adult continent? Wrong, I'm sure, but..

From: someone
even if it doesn't have a limited time, if they move later, they will get the "leftovers" of the new land. - this happens any time new mainland is released.

Yes, but when new mainland is released normally it's just regular land - not land which, if you don't go to now, you might be _forced_ onto in the future.

Hopefully this will be handled very differently from any other mainland release, otherwise every land baron on the grid will be running 100 bots with 0.01 second poll intervals to grab their claim of the biggest gold rush since SL opened.

If you can prove to me numerically that extreme sex/violence related businesses and clubs are the majority in SL, I will. Otherwise just from being in SL for 4 years I'm having a hard time coming up with more than a dozen areas I've seen that would qualify in my mind as extreme. Also someone should charge you for using ellipseses.
According to the definitions of "Adult" previously quoted, walking around outside your house without clothes on... with a photorealistic skin or non-realistic representations of genitals... qualifies as "Adult".

Where I grew up it was common to see topless bathers on the beach outside our front windows, and a ten minute walk along the coast... without passing any posted warnings other than a single sign on one path... took one to a public nude beach. I can not comprehend how anyone could find that "extreme".

I think we should move all the zyngo places to the new continent too cos gambling is sort of adult, then they should just name it "Vegas".

If course I am, and so are you. You're assuming that LL will have the manpower and internal policies that will make it easy for them to implement what they say they intend to implement. I'm assuming that level of perfection is unlikely for ANY company, and that occasional mistakes in the past are indications that they aren't magically perfect.

Agreed Argent - if LL was already policing its own landmasses (ad farms, anyone) with consistency and in a timely fashion, I might have more faith that they'd be able to implement a grid-sweep-sex-cleanup effectively and with minimal disruption. I don't know if they have the resources to devote to that or if the ROI on that work effort would be worth what they'd get out of it in the end. As a business person I'd go with the tabula rasa approach and start a new PG area rather than trying to fanagle it patchwork like this. I'm trying to envision the action plan/project outline for a grid cleanup, and short of Linden avs physically walking everywhere on the mainland to check stuff out and label it for moving, I can't see how they'd effectively get it all.

You are supporting an extreme measure - singling out a group of people (vaguely defined) and tossing them off of places they may have been for years now. So why don't you first prove that a majority of people are SO OFFENDED by these things that all the existing sims need to be sterilized just to appease them? I personally think this group is an even smaller minority.

I agree with some of what you are saying Cory, and you don't deserve too many flames, but it's one thing to force an already established place to move, versus encourage growth in a bubbled clean area that non-mature oriented content could thrive. Surgically removing the extreme people and hoarding us all into the "adult" area, could easily become a witch-hunt.

I respect everyone's views, and if people do not like adult content, then they should have a place to be free from it, but people who have been here, and are peppered throughout the grid should not be expected to move just because some find what they are doing offensive.

I really think the majority of the conflict in what I'm saying vs what other people are saying is the interpretation of just how many people this is going to affect. If the majority of SL was extreme sex stuff, yep, sure, make a continent for non-extreme stuff. But it really doesn't seem to be that way, at least from all I've seen of SL.

I think the whole Estate SIM needs to be rated other than M
03-12-2009 12:13
Jesica Linden: "Estate owners with Adult content on their land will be required to flag their content;"

Define " flag their content;" .

Doesn't the whole Estate sim need to have a content rating other than "M" ? (Like "A" for "ADULT" or ...... ) even if only one parcel is ADULT .

Since LL's said that they've had a lot of requests for this type of setup (or any setup to restrict extreme content from intermingling with other Adult areas), I'd say that's the proof. And how do you measure offense anyway?

I like where I live in Yosu, on Jeogeot, the southern mainland landmass. I've been there over two years. It's a mature sim but my home is more or less PG except for a couple of mildly mature photos in my SL picture gallery.

I do like to go for a swim in the sea, which is about a minute's walk from my home.
Will I need to wear a bikini in future?:)

Would it not be better to have a new continent that is entirely PG? That would avoid anyone having to move.

And remember ... what happens in Vegas ... stays in Vegas ... hey, does that mean no one that TPS in can ever TP back out? In that case, should they call it Hotel California instead ...

This proposal is not about extreme sex stuff. It includes things as tame as public nudity. Do you consider public nudity extreme sex stuff?

I agree that what Cyn and Blondin have said in this thread should be updated on the knowledgebase asap. However, if what they're saying is the interpretation that LL is going with, I don't have a problem with it.

Again, Cyn and Blondin have both said explicitly sexual content or extreme violent content. There's a difference between nudity and a full bore gang bang. People are reacting like they're talking about the former, where I'm from the viewpoint that they're talking about the latter.

Vote with your wallets, people... That's the only thing LL understands... Defund this lunacy... Leave it to the handful of people that are so offended by adult content... Let them support Mitch, M. Linden, and crew...

I can think offhand of several RL members of my family who would indeed find that "extreme". Therein lies the problem ... not all activities are so easily defined, there are as many different opinions as there are users to have them, and anything LL chooses to label as such will have been an arbitrary decision at best.

Nevermind lindens messing up sl
03-12-2009 12:21
I came to second life cause it gave me more freedom i felt i was in a much more mature place or game. Sl is a open canvas you make what you want to make but now it seems like your trying to tell us how to make something? I have to sorrowfuly shake my head at this Cause i feel this wasn't thought about. I was wondering why not randomly pull a few people to the side in like a group thing and you a linden and us the customers who pay for this pol us and ask us what should be done?

Since most of us throw ever damn dollar we have in a failing econmy into this game that you don't even know how to fix anymore. so instead of focusing on how to fix how bad lag is o not to crash lets do this instread this seems a really simple idea. This will be better to the game lets just create another land and move all the really bad stuff to this land. Well this is quite a Fu we got here that sl doesn't even care about the customers that help pay for this game to make this game better cause i see no reason in how this is making something better?

So let me be a real brain here I'm a linden sitting at my desk and i have this idea that if we have one main grid for adult and teen alike that will make the problems of the constant crashing the lag and everything else go away? wow hey you people must be brain surgions . I think you may want to rethink your planing folks cause i reading this and i see it as one thing

Hey correct me if I'm wrong here didn't we have this in rl all these folks here all the other folks there

wow sl is getting that way this is how we spend our money

You're confusing the issue again. The proposal is to rip out all the Adult (that's Adult, not "only the most extreme";) content and confine it to a separate area. If they had the complaints you mentioned above then they are not addressing that issue to begin with.

How would I measure offense? I have no idea, that's why this is such a troubling issue! Better to allow easily-offended folks to move into a gated community at their own option rather than engage in what could be an enforcement nightmare and encourage witch-hunts all over again like we had with the "short av omg age-play" debacle.

I think the majority of the conflict comes from LL wanting to polish Second Life to the outside world. The way I see it, there is no way to truly determine which is the majority, and which is the minority in this matter. All I am saying is that a fairly high sucess rate solution for what they want to accomplish, is to have a place that is completely free of adult content. Rather than stamping a red "A" on all our chests and say we need to restrict our lifestyle.

Except the people that don't want to move in next door to a violent rape/sex/violence business or club (again people this is not for showing a wang, this is for extreme stuff), no one will be inconvenienced and the extreme sex stuff will have full reign over the current SL landmass as it exists now?

It is very simple, if they don't want to move in next door to the sex club............wait for it.............wait...........wait........THEN DON'T BUY LAND NEXT TO A SEX CLUB!

Could this be a straw horse... a distraction to cover up all the bad programming being done.. the constant crashes... database probs... LL does this to keep people in turmoil about this instead of demanding software that actually works... LOL!!

Let's be clear here - this change is not about deleting content or controlling behavior. All of the same content will still be available, just located in a different "virtual" location (and still a teleport away!).

This change is about enhancing Second Life for all Residents by giving them greater control over their inworld experiences. It should help to allow a greater granularity of control over what Residents see, and provide the best available method to make Adult content accessible only to those who ought to (and who desire to) access it.

The best solution is to create a G-Rated continent and let it grow organically. Stop this nonsense of the adult continent right now and do this the sensible way.

A G-Rated continent means less upheaval, it means those who definitely don't want any adult content near them can do so, it means you can apply sensible terminology to what's allowed without a nod and a wink that something will probably be ok, it gives educators a safe home, it does things the right way round.

Enforce your existing community standards on adult content in tandem with this and you have a sensible policy. Even in mature sims adult content shouldn't be visible to all and sundry, these rules already exist.
