I think in this case "emergency" would indicate expedited handling under LL's change-management procedures.

Changes that are not scheduled at all might be called "fail-overs", "crashes", "failures" or "outages":-)

is there any way to find the host number for a visitor? Just to know, if you are at a save place;)

Do Help->About Second Life.

In there, it'll say "you are at sim1234.lindenlab.com" or something like that. The 1234 is the host number for the sim you're on.

Is the newly organized/optimized central stuff reacting well to the load of the roll?

It must be. Things in world seem fast and snappy, even during the rolling restart.

I predict the daily central database meltdown during peak load will remain a thing of the past for quite some time.

Wait till peak time of day to find out
01-22-2009 09:42
Typically around 1400 SL time is the daily peak in number of avatars logged in, that will be the time to see if its stressed out.

Then slightly later (evening USA time) the *apparent* lag goes up. Im not sure if that's due to the internet as a whole being more heavily loaded, or more USA area people with shorter ping times hammering the system harder, but I see it every day.

I guess I am assuming that restarting a whole bunch of regions creates more load than at typical peek times.

You know what I'll never in a million years understand? You go to McDonalds (OK, >I< go to McDonalds) and order a sausage biscuit - and they offer you JELLY. OK, iew much? Jelly with sausage? Who thinks these things through?

I now return you to your normally scheduled thread.

How to find host numbers
01-22-2009 12:02
Hey everybody,
I was reading the report on the Second Life Grid Status Report and it said that the rolling restart was going to effect the regions on odd numbered hosts. How do you find out if you are on one of those? Thanks for any help!

That's cause the bots don't eat dinner, TP, or buy things. :-)

I don't think the stuff they did today could cause your PC to shut down, Oz!

Try posting in the Resident Answers or Technical Issues forums instead. Do Help->About SL and copy the info from the top of that when you post. If it's really powering down your PC, it's usually some type of hardware issue - maybe a flakey power supply or an overheating problem..
