Network related VPN failure
Posted by Status Desk on January 21st, 2009 at 03:31 am PST

[03:38 am PST] The root of the problem appears to be one rack of VPN hosts in one of our colocations. Technicians are on their way to fix it.

In the meantime, we have closed logins temporarily. Please refrain from rezzing no-copy objects and making large transactions.

Due to a VPN problem, you will find that regions inworld might not be visible from their neighboring regions at this time, or that region crossings won’t work.

You might also experience wait time or failure to log in.

Might experience????

I like how it says that logins are disabled at the beginning, and at the end says you may experience problems logging in. Like, duh. . .

Someone at Linden Labs is a comic genius. As I'm sitting here trying to log in, a survey just popped up after my latest failure to log. "Is your experience on Second Life getting better or worse?" I genuinely laughed. Not sure why, but I laughed.

lol. That is funny. Um if logins are disabled, of course you'll experience problems logging in. Will they ever re-enable logins? I've been trying now for about an hour...

I've just deleted a whoooole bunch of messages that were generated by the overnight network problems (we had a switch that hosted several VPNs die). Normally, I also delete replies to deleted off-topic messages, but I've left in Kork's quote of what was really going on.

A tip for everybody : rolling restarts are things we plan and announce. If you're having problems, and I haven't posted here that the rolling restart has begun, or if it's not during the announced time of a rolling restart, then your problems are not RR related.

To answer some other questions : to find out if a region you're in is in the pilot group, go to Help:About Second Life. That will tell you what version of the server you're running. If it's already on 1.25, then that region was in this rolling restart's pilot group. If 1.24, then it wasn't.

And, yes, while a few hundred of the pilot regions were volunteered, we choose the rest randomly. While that may sound brutal and unfair, bear in mind that before we did that, we would just roll the whole grid to start with. The reason we do a pilot group is so that we can find problems before we've rolled to the whole grid, thereby saving us the pain of having to also unroll the whole grid. In other words, if you're in the pilot group and think it's unfair, bear in mind that you'd have received the first wave of rolls every time in the old way of doing things. We do not choose the same regions for the pilot roll every time, unless the region has been volunteered. Yes, sometimes your region will be in the pilot multiple major rolls in a row as a result of randomness.
