HAI GUIZ! WOT'S GOIN' ON IN DIS THREAD?

From: joeypt Plutonian
If my brother does suicide, I'll attribute it to Linden Lab and could file a wrongful death suit. Someone please give me some advice on what to do. Thanks. I won't name him here because it'll probably be against the rules.

Speaking as an experienced and successful troll myself, I'm going to say that this sentence in the OP's post should form the main focus for replies to this thread.

Yeah.. you know, I'm going to go with, "This isn't the place to ask for this kind of help. The kind of help you need can only be given by a mental health care specialist." Oddly enough this fits all the scenarios of this post.

Really, get RL mental help. For yourself, for your family and for your bro.

I sympathise with the OP actually; I mean, his brother's, like, picking his nose and stuff. That's just not normal behaviour for a teenage boy. Not normal at all.

As I said, mental health care specialist.

And I'm not a good judge of what's "normal" behavior...

I have a sneaking suspicion the OP is self-abusing himself to this thread in that way that makes your palms hairy.

We've definitely become a culture of Self Entitlement and Victimization. The "Good Life" our parents and Grandparents worked so hard to acheive was handed to us, we feel it is owed to us, Now that it is becoming necessary for many to have to work harder than our predecessors, we are becoming bitter and resentful.

The only thing I don't get is why this thread has not been locked and moved to the trash bin... Now that IS LL's fault. :) (assuming LL still runs these forums).

You know, there are plenty of kids out there who had good parenting, and still make bad choices, even criminal choices. Just as there are plenty of kids who have suffered abuse and piss-poor parenting who lead stellar lives. This kind of blanket "it's all the parents' fault" statement does not take into account individual personalities and free will, and in its own way, is just as wrong-headed as its converse. There really are no blanket statements about human behavior, and it's just as wrong to place all the blame on parents as it is to place all the blame on LL, for example.

It may or may not be the parents' fault. But it is their responsibility to deal with it. And until he hits 18, it is their legal responsibility.

Of course, this is academic, since we are dealing here with an obvious troll.

I am not going to bother reading this entire thread for a variety of reasons, so much of this has probably already been said.

1) Sorry, but the parents have apparently lost control of the child

2) Yes, the parents can keep the child off of the computer and off of the internet if they want to bad enough.

3) At the very least, the parents can keep SL from being accessed from your home with a phone call to LL

4) If you have an SL account and you ever find out your brother's SL account names, it is you obligation to notify LL of the account name and the fact that he is underage.

From: joeypt Plutonian
Wow this game's community really has been dumbed down since all the profitable businesses slowed down. Before residents used to be very kind, thoughtful, and helpful. Not spammers or trolls. .....
This statement indicates that you have been around the SL community for a while, yet this account you are posting with has a very new date. Therefore, you are either lying in your statement here or intentionally trolling -- though I suppose it is *possible* that you are telling the truth and you are simply an older account that is afraid for some reason to use that account.

So how about, instead of blaming this community and LL for the problems, you return to the age old concept of "personal and family responsibility"

I think the OP and his brother needs to get more interested in girls. That will solve the problem, it will start new ones but at least neither of them will be stuck on the internet...like...us...erm...

Even though this is clearly a trolling thread, and there is therefore no brother, still it's important to remember that we are talking about a hypothetical 16 year old here - not a 6 year old. In many countries a 16 year old is considered mature enough to fight in the army, so seeing a little furry porn shouldn't really phase them too much.

While it is clear that in this hypothetical situation the parents have decided to try (ineffectually) to prevent the boy accessing Second Life, still I feel that we should be less forthcoming with our condemnation; had they decided to allow the boy access to Second Life, I can hardly find it in me to say that that would necessarily be wrong either.

I don't know about the US Army, but the British Army accepts recruits from the age of 15 and three quarters with parental permission. Although they are not allowed into combat until they are 17, a 16 year old soldier could concievably find themselves serving as a medic on the frontline and would see things significantly more disturbing than Trout's naked avatar.....maybe "significantly" is a strong word......would see things slightly more disturbing that Trout's naked avatar. If a 16 year old can handle seeing that (war, not Trout naked - none of us need to see that) then they should be able to cope with whatever Second Life can through at them.

This is not an issue of LL's TOS - that's their responsibility to enforce. The only issue here is that the boy in question (the hypothetical boy) is disobeying his parent's instructions; the mere fact that those instructions pertain to Second Life does not compound his crime any more than if they told him to be back by 11 and he wasn't.

My proposal then is this; those people who can honestly say that at 16 they obeyed their parents' instructions to the letter can condemn these hypothetical parents and the hypothetical boy. The rest of us do not have the moral authority to do anything but consume pastry goods in this thread.

Enlistment in the US Military is 17 with consent...18 otherwise.

wow this post made it 8 pages, im stupified...

It has obviously touched a nerve for a lot of people.

And I'm encouraged by the response. The posters seriously addressing the issues the OP raised are universally outraged at the widespread ethos of taking no responsibility for one's own actions, blaming anyone and everyone else when something goes wrong as a result of one's actions, and assertions of entitlement to whatever one needs or wants in life, provided by "society" (meaning everybody else who can be drafted into providing or paying for it) or the nearest deep pockets.

This ethos was the Politically Correct mantra of an entire generation of the philosophical faction that likes to think of itself as "Progressive," and this is a venue that seems to attract more than its share of people inclined to that end of the philosophical spectrum. Yet everyone posting to the question of responsibility without exception (other than the original troll) has passionately rejected that mantra.

I would like to think this thread is a straw in the wind indicating that something fundamental has changed in the way society in general is thinking. If so, it is a change for the better - incalculably better.

Of course, I always was a cockeyed optimist...

If a boy hasn't been shot twiceand killed atleast one enemy by the age of 17, he's no kind of a man.

@Conan: What can I say. There are too many bleeding heart liberals in this country, I guess.

And that people are willing to cross that line without hesitation.

I agree with Har; I do find the general response to be encouraging.

This morning a young man I know is in the hospital in a coma from a herion overdose. His older brother killed himself a little more then a year ago. The oldest brother of the family is a boy I've known since he was 16, he is now a 28 yr old veteran with two small boys of his own. To me, today, this thread seems less amusing. Today this thread is making me sad.

Taking responsiblity for one's actions is a difficult lesson. But it is essential. Hopefully society will start encouraging it more.

The blame culture of society today sickens me. It's why we must have stupid warnings like, "Not to be used to trim nasal hair" on chainsaws. Because some *idiot* somewhere tried it and decided to sue the chainsaw manufacturer.

QFT!

In addition to a very funny comedy routine on this subject (by Bill Engvall - "Here's Your Sign" or "Stupid People" - it's called one or the other), this reminds me of the women who spilled coffee from MacD's on herself - sued them (because she was too stupid to realize that coffee is generally served hot) - and for awhile at least there was a "caution" affixed to the drive-through windows at MacD's "warning" that...coffee is hot.

*shakes head and keeps reading, betting this gets weirder as it goes along*
