Treasure, that's what I meant, a businessperson exploring SL on their own time to get a general sense of the whole thing. I had no doubt that what you describe exists for businesses. It would have to!

I've been reading a bit here and there about how LL is trying to bill themselves as a venue for businesses like IBM to have meetings in SL because it's cheaper than flying people in IRL. I'm trying to imagine a businesswoman who decides to check out SL to assess it. Well first off she's expected to wear a body called, perhaps, "Centerfold" (a recommended one at Free Dove) and totter around in a black lace teddy and stiletto heels. Hmm. I'll bet she's going to get a certain impression from that. I sure did.
I think some of us might have mentioned this to Linden Lab now and then. :)

Interestingly, IBM is now advertising an OpenSim-based 3d collaboration tool as part of the Lotus suite. NOT a Linden Lab product.

I've occasionally sent a couple of "newb alt" selves in so I could send people wandering around the help islands to better places.

...this contiuned "we are holier than thou because we are short" has got to end.

I didn't read Bri's comments as having anything against short AV's, but more the whole package as Pussycat said.

To me it's an AV that's way out of proportion - the huge boobs with stick legs type look - whatever the height.

I never made it to Gnubies when I was a Gnubie, lol. So, I recently decided to check it out, hey its never too late, right? Place was packed with bloodlines. I thought bloodlines was no longer supposed to bite/solicit people under 14 days old? These were 0 and 1 days old folks, all bloodlines with zero blood wealth and zero souls, etc. I wonder if they even knew they were vampires, gave me a sad.....

I have seen bloodlines in places I've shopped. I had a blue window pop up that said some male wanted to give me something, and I refused it, but that's from years of not opening strange email attachments.

I still think we're better off all walking around as giant robots or dragons or even WEIRD things like ferrets...

Oh I wear a hud so I'll know who's who, lol. It just surprised me how MANY Of them there were, in that freebie store. I haven't gotten a bite request in a long time, guess I just don't look appetizing which is fine, np.

Also to be fair, I"ve recently met some bloodlines members who are very low key about their rp, respectful if you aren't doing their RP and who I really, really like a lot. So, I didn't mean that as a general put down of bloodlines. I just feel sorry for all those new people who possibly don't even realize it.

I agree. So incredibly out of proportion that it no doubt invites lots of attention, which is most likely exactly the point. For some people even negative attention is better than none at all, even in SL.

I wonder about the visual perception ability of those who wear these things paired with the very tall, long legged, thin body. Can they really not actually *see* how ridiculous it looks? (I realized I'm making a judgment here).

Reminds me of a discussion in another forum some time ago regarding ultra thin Avi; can the wearers really not tell that they are disturbingly anorexic looking?

*Shrugs* Meh. I like to think I can move about the grid with the 'live and let live' attitude but in reality sometimes it's hard. It's normal human behavior for us to negatively judge others, particularly those who step very far away from our own personal idea of what is acceptable. We roll our eyes and cluck our tongues (tsk tsk) all the time, sometimes without even realizing we're doing it. I for one am trying to make an effort to knock it off some...but it ain't easy. It's what we do.

BUT.... I do think a persons attitude greatly affects how others view them. If the "ginormous boobies contingent" were not so abrasive and nasty in this and other threads, perhaps other posters would be less inclined to pick at them. Ultimately behavior is what makes someone appear attractive or ugly; not necessarily the skin they're in.

Confessions of a Frankenbarbie
09-10-2009 13:29

My avatar is 6'6" in bare feet. I originally made her 5'9" to match my RL height, but adapted her to fit the scale the world seems to be built in. I think this height pretty well represents what I wanted. Still, notice how the hood of a sports car which would typically be about mid-thigh in RL is just below waist high on me. What is worse is I used an optical trick to get it that close; I am actually standing a little bit in front of the car.

None of this really matters at all. Scale, size or whatever. In a world with dogs, and humans and fairies and dragons and bi-pedal kitties and rolling piles of rocks and otters and space ships and tiny bears all wandering around together, how come no one gives a drowned rat's ass what size all those other things are? Why the contentions abut too small vs too tall humans?

The only difference I can think of is the paranoia over child avatars. Either being called one or being around one in a mature setting. It is not the kids in SL either; I want to get that straight. It is the paranoia. It is the fear that drives us to unreasonable responses.

Because self-righteous "NORMAL" (aka TALL AS HELL) avatars, like to tell us "normal" (aka real life size) avatars that we are too short and that we need to scale up or to get out of their establishment because of our size (which is usually followed by a kick and ban if it was not done automatically by script).

So far I have been to 2 places now where i was auto-kicked and banned on REZ - i didn't even get a chance to see the place i was kicked so fast, and I am 5'6" in SL (and RL).

It gets lame when people are constantly saying "gee you are short", when really it is more like "gee you are abnormally proportioned and tall".

What is worse is when they tell you to size up to be with them which makes me go: What the F#ck Frankenstud!?

People really need to think back about when these posts started and why: "short" avatars being harassed/picked on/singled out, by taller avatars.

The tide is changing. Why? Knowledge of proportions, taste, and a want to be "realistic" in their size and proportions. More people are recognizing that though they like to be tall, having legs twice the length of your torso and a body equal to 11 of your heads - looks wrong and generally unattractive to those who care about such things.

And yea, i did say "Frankenstud".

When I walked in the Help People Island freebie shop, I was quite taken aback. I actually had to work to find a simple pair of jeans and a non-revealing top. I almost left the game based on my reaction to that store...

Been to one of those big outdoor freebie areas lately? The women's sections look like a Frederick's of Hollywood blew up. The Frankenbarbie look goes well with the clothes that are pushed on the newbie.

So my point is twofold. First, that I am evidence that it is possible for a newbie to have a brain and to seek out and build a style that is not a Frankenbarbie look.

Show a newbie a freebie store that has actual clothing, like non-asscrack jeans and nice tops, and you're going to see more regular looking avs walking around.

I buy a lot of very sensual and sometimes downright naughty clothes (though I don't care for the designs often in the freebie areas) -
- BUT I also like to have a good supply of regular clothing.

You can IM me if you want to know where some of that can be found without costing too much. I can't lead you to much that is free, but I do know some that is cheap. Often its a piece here and there among a designer's collection rather than a collection per se.

And yes, it is possible for a newbie to seek out a non Frankenbarbie look. My shape dates to 2006. But I made it myself. Now its on xstreet and slapt.me for free, as well as in my shop.
- To actually find one is -not- easy. You have to realize the option is there, and then search for it, and wade through a lot of bad search results to find it.

This is a real problem, though you gotta realise that most of the stuff in the freebie stores is stuff that *didn't sell*.

Often. Sometimes its just a designer that cares.

I'm of the opinion that the best pair of jeans and a blouse in all of SL is right by the front door of Free Dove from a designer named 'lavish' or lanie or something...

Yep. From Grendel's Childeren I would guess. It looked like a rock monster like thing when standing but when it moved the rocks would bounce and rumble around in a pile. It looked fantastic!

Do ferret fans have like a secret handshake or something, or a 'carrier pigeon
  • ' service to instantly get a needed reference out to the ferrethood? :D
    - You have way too many of those images. ;)

  • Recent events have shown that pigeons can actually outrace the internet, at least in South Africa... :D

    Just respect peoples choices
    09-11-2009 19:58
Regardless of whether an avatar is tall or short, fat or skinny, busty or flat, human or furry, alien or robot or any other appearance, it was the choice of the person using that Avatar to make their Avatar appear that way. I'm willing to bet that all of the people that go around telling people that their Avatar should look a certain way don't let others tell THEM how they should look (aside of course from dress codes for work or such). If people don't like the way someone's Avatar looks they're more than welcome to go somewhere else where they don't have to see it, personally if I catch anyone trying to seriously tell someone they should look a certain way (aside from normal friendly tips saying maybe things like 'try tweaking the cheekbone settings' or something like that, AFTER they've been approached for help) I will eject that person for such behavior, if they come back and do it again I will ban them, if I get reports of people distributing those Avatar packs without being asked for one, those people will get banned. If you can't accept the choices made by others then you are more than welcome to put a bullet in your own head, it might be for the best if you do, since I'm willing to bet you can't function competently in society anyway if you lack a simple thing like tolerance and respect for peoples rights to choose for themselves.

And if you think it's tough for females, it's even harder for guys to get clothes that look good and aren't for a rapper or a pimp.

Yeah, what's up with that? Logged on yesterday after I read this, I noticed it. There are like 5 looks a guy can choose from in SL: Gangsta, Gangster, Vampire, Gorlord, Noob. With a smattering of scifi movie characters sprinkled on top. I just always thought it was because the guys weren't as concerned about fashion and just went with what everyone else was wearing.

There's another beginner av I've seen running around, that girl in the pink dress with the brown hair. Again, not a Frankenbarbie, in fact she couldn't look any more average.

When I walked in the Help People Island freebie shop, I was quite taken aback. I actually had to work to find a simple pair of jeans and a non-revealing top. I almost left the game based on my reaction to that store...I was not interested in some sex-based game. However I stuck with it because I was at home for a week. I was given a new free shape and immediately edited it to reduce the extreme measurements and then set out to create my own style.

Interesting thread. AK Alchemi, I had the same experience as prefer simple clothes closer to those seen in RL like a simple dress or jeans and a nice T-Shirt. A lot of the womens clothes in SL stores I would not be seen dead in but that is just my taste :) Another challenge for me was to find some more hair I liked - something very simple like in RL - with plaits or ponytails. After a week or so of searching, finally found a store with some.

The height thing is very strange in SL. I originally thought my avatar was only about 5ft 6 or something as I looked quite short when in a large group of people especially in clubs or at xploders. One day, I got my height measured in a shop and was surprised to find I was 6ft 3" - tall enough to join the Police in RL!

By the way, even after a month my avatar still wears the noob pink polka dress with the brown hair from time to time. Actually I quite like and it also seems to attract a lot of guys over to talk - probably because they didn't check out my profile age and think I'm still a new born :D. With fashion and height in SL, I realize everyone has different tastes and it is each to their own as long as they realize and treat everyone else the same way.

More and more people seem to want to have an accurate and human height now.

Since putting out a free height meter and a free shape a few days ago - they've been getting quite a few takers. Hopefully more meters that show actual avatar height being around will help address the issue.

After all, people can't make much of a choice if they aren't both informed and have access to things to choose.

Over in the Poser community its been this way since the 90s:

Artists mostly make items for females because customers, even for freebies, mostly only go for the things made for women.

You can be the -only- merchant making a free, ultra realistic, male business outfit, suits, ties, and so on... and get less takers on the free item than the the $30 USD cheap looking low quality pair of barely bothered to texture panites you make for an out of date female mesh, 3 years after the party's over for that mesh, and with a good 1000 people already competing with you with better looking products...

    So why bother?

I imagine that while it might not be that bad in SL, its probably not all that good for makes of male clothing...
