May as well try telling people they can't play avatars that show them in a slightly better light, or tell humans they can't play furries or other animal themed avatars.
What about hermaphrodites? Can guys and girls play them? They're only 50% the wrong gender =) _____________________

LOL The question that needs asked about the chinese MMO is Why? Are MMOs that big a hook-up destination for Chinese? And why dont the men have to come on webcam and prove they are men? Because they are too busy getting their sister/mother/girlfriend to stand in front of a webcam for them? |

Because in SL, a male has absolutely zero advantage over a female - unless the female allows it. The core of SL is creativity. SL amplifies everything, so this perceived power-loss is probably a huge issue for some. You know the way you sometimes read a phrase and your brain formulates the next word before you really see it? I wanted creativity to read connectivity here LOL. I think that would encompass the creativity that Sling did put plus the connection that I was thinking. Hmm. I certainly agree that SL is very empowering for us. It removes that factor of male strength, and that is so liberating. But I wonder ... do these other games reproduce in the games a power advantage for men over women? I haven't played them, but I think that would be odd in light of the reports than many men playing them seem to choose to play women. My guess is what turns (some) men off to SL is that they prefer games where you shoot and kill things more than many women do. This reminds me of an event in my past. In my biker days I would sometimes be found in a circle of the girls down the pub; not because I was gay, not because I wanted to be a transgender lesbian but just because we got on together. I would usually be with the guys don't get me wrong. I could talk nuts and bolts with the best of them but they couldn't understand I was also happy with just talking to girls. First of all, Second Life is supposed to be a game. What does the person behind the avatar, whether male or female have to do with anything? Second of all not everyone who has an av of the other gender is gay or transexual or whatever. Many people just want to see what it feels to be someone completely different from what they are used to. If this is our second life, then it is up to each person to choose for themselves what they want to experience. If I can choose to be a fairy, a vampire, an elf, an alien, why not a man? I just don't get it. Whilst I'm itching to say SL is so much more than a game, whole threads have been devoted to that and it's off topic LOL I quote you Alchima in thanks for supporting one of my points before I said it ![]() I think there's a number of transgender players simply to avoid the stereotypes people like to use. You're going to think this crazy but when I'm Bilbo I feel a little penned in in my behaviour, compelled to conduct myself in an orderly fashion LOL ... My alts are free as birds .. still proper .. but freer. The poll results are very gratifying ... I hope the Chinese can see them .. just what do they think they are doing?!? _____________________

Damn... why?
It's second life, u can choose what u wanna be, and more or less how u wanna act in SL. I think shemales (i call them this way, with no insult meant) just gave the spice in SL. It is true it can be really frustrating (for girls who think they engage in friendship or sth more with a shemale not knowing behind an avs is a man), but if u are smart enough and if it is important what gender in rl is your avi friend u can easily and soon enough found out... Just think about it. Well if u are a man engaging in a virtual relationship with a shemale- its your fault ![]() Im strongly against banning expressing yourself differently. |

That's a bit of a sexist statement, women can do anything ![]() Hmm next we will have male & female split divisions of WoW in Player Vs Player Tournements ![]() Actually, clinical studies have shown that men do indeed demonstrate more aggressiveness than women, from infancy on up. Whether this is nature or nurture is an open question, but the difference is statistically measurable. _____________________

daniel l: hey boss. the poll results are in on the sexual ambiguity issue. 4.64% of polled residents support banning and 95.36% oppose.
phil l: its your call daniel. daniel l: i propose we contact integrity llc and have them fast track the optional gender verification. robin l: dont forget to cloud the issue with a vague blog daniel. daniel l: i wont. i'll ask the residents to turn in the gender benders and then i will ban them. phil l: so we are making gender bending a tos violation? daniel l: no. |

When I get semi-frozen with lag I'll take my hands off the keyboard and mouse and just sit and wait, patiently in anticipation .... fiancee will fume and scream and scrub her desk with the mouse! Nobody messes with Morgaine! ... and I have her permission to say so! _____________________

As well as the subject or whether RLs resemble their avatars in terms of gender, age or even species, there is another side to this. There must be a variation in the emotional interface between RLs and their avs. One the one hand, some people see the av as an extension of their 'real' selves, while others see them as virtual friends, actors or puppets.
