From: Rock Vacirca If anyone is going to the Game Developers' Conference in Cologne next week, I shall be there. Top of my list will be the Crytek booth, where they will be demonstrating the CryEngine3, and something called LiveBuild. Can't wait!

The more virtual worlds there are the better. They can all learn and compete with each other which makes it better for users for many reasons, not the least of which is choice. I had heard about Blue Mars here on the forums and just now went to check out some YouTube videos. Blue Mars obviously has many similarities to Second Life, and also many differences. Frankly I'm quite happy with my Second Life; the things I love most about it (scripting, user creations, and the free market) are probably a long way off, if ever, in Blue Mars. But I don't look at Blue Mars or other virtual worlds as mutually exclusive, but rather as mutually inclusive. I can play as many of them as I want. A Glimpse of Blue Mars -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGKWvXogUxsBlue Mars - New Teaser Trailer (June 2009) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C89ZL6wjwM[This is of course on the hype side but quite impressive nonetheless.] BLUE MARSをやってみた。BeachCity編[HD対応] -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXntsMOPIbo[This is probably the most realistic of the three in that it provides a good idea of the user interface, how the cameras operate, and user interaction.] It’s not even public beta yet. So there’s some promise for it I think. I'm not going to quickly diss this or draw any conclusions yet. =) If nothing else, Linden Lab should be paying attention. Me, not so much. -i

From: Eli Schlegal No... that would be Blue Moon. (Which is actually a Belgian Ale) A blue moon is the second full moon in a month.

From: Novis Dyrssen If you had half the brain cells you proclaim to sport, you'd have seen that she was talking about the client, not the developer's client, which is "BlueMarsDev_WebSetup.exe". Kthnxbai. Pot calling the kettle black? Actually, Suezanne did specifically ask about the Developer Client when she was discussing her setup failure on the regular client. From: SuezanneC Baskerville Will the developer's client serve the same function as this client? Rock answered that question appropriately and correctly, as the Dev client will not serve to access the available cities presented in the normal client. Maybe next time you ought to try providing a helpful answer instead of throwing attitude.

I'm curious as to why mention of Blue Mars puts some people into such a tizzy? Beyond whether mentioning a competitor here is proper or not. Blue Mars hold no appeal to me at the present, and perhaps Rock is a bit fanboish about it, but so what? You can discuss it's merits or flaws fine, and make your comparisons to SL, and stuff, but why the visceral response from some? I don't get it. It's almost like going to Boston wearing a New York Yankees shirt.

From: Brenda Connolly I'm curious as to why mention of Blue Mars puts some people into such a tizzy? I can only state why it annoys me so much, and the reason boils down to one single thing - the attitude attached to it. So far, quite a few people claiming to be "deeply involved" with BetaMars have come here and tried to tell us that we have no taste because we treasure what SL has to offer and that we are the fanboys because we stick to SL when it is so much inferior. Repeating over and over "Yeah, but what you have now sucks, so come on, catch a glimpse of the REAL future!" is not likely to win me over. Quite the opposite. Especially since BM does not live up to the promises. What I have seen so far of BM, is in some places shiny, in others a laugh and altogether NOT the next best thing since Tuesday. Might turn into something nice to visit, but that's it - a place to visit, mostly, not somewhere to BE and something to PARTICIPATE in. That might change over time, currently I doubt it. And in Rock's case, I just get annoyed because he claims to know it all and know it best and still is proven wrong easily. *shrugs*

From: SuezanneC Baskerville After downloading "BlueMars_WebSetup.exe" and running it, the installation proceeds for a while, and gets to a point where it displays the software as "Blue Mars", the version as 0.0.4639.1, and after clicking the "Next" button, I get an error message as follows:
Runtime error in setup script: Source File: Blue Mars Line Number: 146 RichEdit line insertion error.
Will the developer's client serve the same function as this client? Hi SuezanneC, There was a fault on the server delivering Component 3. If you download it afresh it should install OK. Rock

From: Rock Vacirca I have noticed that too on all the other forums I visit, a small subset of the regulars who wish to control what the others read and find interesting. For info, SL is regularly discussed in both the Opensim and Blue Mars forums.
I am glad to see that SL does not now lock down threads discussing other VWs. I got a warning myself last year from Kat Linden about discussing OpenSim, when it was pointed out by another Linden to her that SL and Opensim were currently working on a joint project to allow teleports between the grids (I was a member of that team). Since then, other VWs can be discussed, but I think the line is that you should not openly promote them by posting price comparisons etc.
You can be sure that LL is taking a very keen interest in BM, and are following everything that is currently being written. One of the first rules of business is to follow and anticipate the actions of your competitors. Residents of SL, particularly those with business interests here, should also be keeping a close eye on alternatives to SL, as both threats and opportunities exist.
Joining SL a few years ago has never stopped me from visiting and exploring other VWs. I have enjoyed the experience so much I start writing about my experiences, and still do. I offer praise where praise is due, and constructive criticism where I feel changes would enhance the experience, with concrete suggestions.
Some of the features of BM are simply breathtaking, and I am sure SL are planning on how to respond. This will be good news for everyone, as I for one do not want a SL that stagnates, but rises to the challenge of young upstarts like Blue Mars, and pours on the goodies.
Work is currently going on with regards to moving builds between SL and BM. Pressure is growing for SL to adopt mesh imports, which could lead to builds moving in both directions. I hope SL and BM get together in the same way as SL and Opensim did, and some common interchange standards get adopted. SL is in the best position of them all to lead the way on this.
For me, VWs are not an either/or decision, I embrace them all (but when it comes to Twinity - god give me strength).
If anyone is going to the Game Developers' Conference in Cologne next week, I shall be there. Top of my list will be the Crytek booth, where they will be demonstrating the CryEngine3, and something called LiveBuild. Can't wait!
