Banning on property

I have some questions on restricting access to my property and home. I have created a group and only my group can enter my land... or so I thought. I am sitting in my skybox (150m up) and a stranger lands on my deck and asks if I want to buy a doorbell. WTF? I banned him from the property but he should not have been able to get on in the first place.

How can I stop that from happening again? What am I missing?

I know how you feel. I restricted access on my property, ban lines and all yet people could build right over it.
Careful... some people here will say you are whining.

Ban lines only go so far up. Ban by name goes forever. Get a security orb.

Whining? Yeah.. maybe a little. I know the other land owner is within his rights, so no big deal.

I just though that if you restricted access to a small group, that would be it. It would make sense that if banning is unlimited, then access should work the same way.

Security Orb... I like it.

So, in theory, one could fly 'over' either ban line? o_O

I do it all the time. Sometimes I stop flying over a banned parcel to see how many times I bounce.

What I was trying to get across (my bad for not being more clear) is you cant fly over and INTO said banned area?

You can't. Hence the bouncing. Ban lines could be more properly termed "ban cubes." There's a definite visible ceiling on them.

Except for explicitly banning someone by name, all bans, including banning those who haven't provided age verification, are only effective to 50M above the terrain surface. It essentially makes an extension of the terrain surface as the 'roof' of the area enclosed by the ban lines - invisible, but a banned person can't descend through that 'roof'. A ban by name goes to 768 M altitude.

This makes all forms of banning other than banning an individual by name completely worthless for protecting a sky build, since anything more than 50 M above the terrain is not protected. To protect areas higher than that, you need a security orb, such as the Omega System. These can be set with a specified radius of effect from the orb itself, ranging as far as 96 meters radius from the orb. Most systems can be set to confine their effects to parcel boundries. Anyone who comes inside the effect area is checked against the parcel access lists or against the lists maintained by teh system itself. If not allowed, then the system will usually either push them away, eject them from the parcel, or teleport them home, after first issuing a warning. 10 to 15 seconds warning is typical. Less than 10 seconds will leave you open to abuse reports for being too agressive. Most systems will either add an ejected person to the parcel ban list for you, or will maintain their own list of ejected people.

There is only one 'security method' provided by Linden Lab that will prevent access at all altitudes, for anyone not specificly allowed in the area. That is to buy your own entire sim, and uncheck the "Public Access" option in the Estate controls. Then only the individuals or groups that you add to the estate access list can visit your private sim.

Whatever you do, please DON'T use blanket bans. It's extremely rude. I'm so glad LL decided to drop the upper limit for ban lines to 60 mts. There is NO reason why to use these ban lines if all you have on your property is a skybox. If you're concerned about restricting access to your skybox (not to the property), then get a security orb. It's the only polite way to warn any wandering avatar that's private property and that they should leave, and it won't affect anyone who is just flying around.
I, like many other people in SL, like to fly around the grid. It's the worst way to end a nice day by getting stuck in someone's ban lines, I fall to the ground and my balloon gets returned to inventory. Then I can't re-rezz it cuz the parcel is No Build!

I recommend against using general access restrictions. Many residents don't like them because they are so ugly. There is no real privacy in SL anyway, so a personal ban against unwanted persons should be sufficient. Also, for those moments where you want to remain undisturbed, you could use a (properly configured) security device.

Banlines only go 50m above ground level, unless you are banning by name specifically. I think there's a jira about making them go all the way to 768, but i'm no good at finding things on jira lol...

You could use a security orb =/

What got me miffed was that my GF was showing me her new outfits. Next thing I know I see "Oh my!" in the chat right when she is is undressed. Next thing I know this idiot is trying to sell me a door bell. My GF was yelling 'GET OUT". By the time I could get to the EJECT he was gone.

Part of my problem is I just changed houses. The old one had a great windows system. Then new one is OK, but no one way black out. It looks like I'm buying another house from the previous maker soon as well.

I will be looking into getting a security orb soon. Which would you recommend?
Home Security Orb v9 (L$599)
Omega Securtiy System v2.3.3 (L$400)
or another...

Wonders why the hell you'd be playing SL if your GF was undressed?

Oh and don't ban, get dressed and invite them in for a drink, love not war!

Invite him in? No thanks! I just don't invite just ANY doorbell salesman into my home.

I'm just looking to maintain privacy and keep the masses at bay. Now, if SL only had scripted attack dogs... HEY! there is an idea!

Get a bee-hive!

Or, even more impressive is a Tiger or Panther that can be "commanded" to chase or attack an interloper!

I use Psyke Phaeton's, which may be the first one you mentioned.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Why is it rude for a land owner to use whatever means they have available to them to keep unwanted people out?

"It's the only polite way to warn any wandering avater (you mean intruders?) that's private property (like if most don't already know it is) and that they should leave.." (the problem is they don't want to leave) This comment is hilarious, very funny indeed.

Being polite to trespassers went out the window long ago. It was killed by, what is it they called themselves? Oh, I know, "explorers." By them and by those who just can't seem to find anything better to do except nose around on private properties.

If they did some would ask you to muzzle them as a way of being "polite" to trespassers.

I'm still laughing at that polite suggestion.

Not everyone who engages in "exploring" will intentionally tresspass on private property. I certainly do not cross private boundaries on a whim, so broad-brushing everyone who goes sight-seeing is very misleading.

One other fact comes to mind is that unless someone has a visible security system of some sort engaged, there are a lot of places a member/owner considers to be "private" that are not marked or designated in any way. If such a place is not identifed, how is a casual traveler to know?

If I accidentally stumble onto a private area, I exit. If confronted I will apologize and then depart. But if someone gives me a ration of crap, I might not be as polite as I would if they had demonstrated the least amount of courtesy in the first place.

I just got the guard bees - they are great! I had fun tormenting one of my alts with them. I have Phidian Krasner's Bee Hive Home Security (we have an affiliate vendor at our store) and highly recommend it.

My story: I bought some land yesterday for prims to expand our store in Lilypad - the land is not adjacent to the store, so there's no reason anyone outside our group should be there. I put up a little workshop on the prim land and a beehive, and forgot to turn off the beehive when I went offline for the night. I logged in to a message from someone I don't know asking me why I have guard wasps at my house! I am tempted to ask this person, a complete stranger to me, why he/she wanted to be in my workshop in the first place, and why they think they have a right to ask why I have a security system there! But instead, I will just ignore. Some folks really do seem to think they have a right to go everywhere, and to question anyone who tries to restrict their access. I suppose I'll have to put up a sign too to warn people about the bees.

I'm with you Elessar, I like to explore too and like it when people explore my places, everyone is always welcome... I have several houses, a stable, a chapel etc and don't lock anything. Also, when I'm out shopping sometimes I just take off flying from the shop I've found in Search and explore the neighborhhod, I love to see what people are building and how they are planting and decorating. I run across small signs occasionally that say "Private Home, Please Don't Disturb Residents" and I leave immediately, as any civilized person would. I see banlines on bare lots all the time and wonder what the heck people are affraid of... I detest banlines and love to explore!
