From: Beezle Warburton Important question -- are they going to give me a cut?
How many serial murderers have been described as "polite, quiet young men?" Was the unibomber the only one that wasn't described as a "polite, quiet"? Great I can't recall the moniker correctly.

From: Ordinal Malaprop Oh, and if this hasn't been posted yet - if anybody wants to see perhaps one of the most extreme examples of a way in which somebody sounds can most definitely _not_ be representative of their thoughts and character... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnylM1hI2jc I completely missed this before, sorry about that. I spent the time to sit and watch the video and was extremely affected by it. Getting ready to watch the others that were posted as a response. This is a true case where you could see much about the person through text. Thank you for posting it.

From: Lindal Kidd If you're not going to use the mic, there's no need to use a headset with voice. Just use your computer speakers, and let your ears breathe.
[EDIT: What I mean is, enable voice so that you can see and hear who's using it. They'll see your dot too, so they know you can hear them. Continue to type text to them, however.] You miss my point. I don't WANT to use speakers. If I use speakers, everyone around me has to listen to them. This is rude, especially since I don't particularly want to listen to them. I just don't want to hear it. I listen to people all day. I don't object to speaking. I object to not knowing whether those around me are using voice. If voice interests me, I'll enable voice. Right now, it doesn't interest me. I simply think those who don't use voice should have a visual cue as to whether a conversation is going on around them, similar to the typing animation. It would be a simple thing to implement, and there's no reason not to extend this courtesy.

From: 2k Suisei I don't think it's really about voice. It's about bored people arguing for the hell of it. You know, considering how these threads always turn out the same way, I'm going to have to agree with you. I'm outta this one.

From: Brenda Connolly I'm not sure if I Godwinned this thread yet, but they say Hitler was polite and quiet, most of the time. I Godwined it after your stipend comment. I made that Kelly's Heroes reference. That was this thread wasn't it? I also called Mike a grammar Nazi. So now its triple Godwined.

From: Sunni Jewell Exactly my point. And would someone really recognize that it was their grandma they were talking to? In my opinion, hearing someone's voice does not mean the relationship is free of deception, and does also not mean that you know a lot more about that person than what you could learn from text chat. If you're not face to face, living with a person, you never really know them. And even living with them, there can still be surprises that pop up. I've heard that Ted Bundy was very well-spoken and articulate. Which is to say you never can know anything, and you will never know if the choices you made were the right ones or not. Ack. Sartre-esque at best!

Without reading all 28 pages… O.o Did the OP get her answer? Which is…Enable voice and turn down the Voice volume. She will see the green waves over people who are talking and can also us the Near Me option in the History window to see who around her has voice enabled. Thank you….carry on

Please don't hit the kid...(^_^)y And please vote on the Jira: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1795 . I believe it's a real bug and needs attention. If everyone turned on voice and nobody listened; Why would anyone bother to talk?

It's not eavesdropping, the people who are in voice chat KNOW it's public, and they expect people to be listening. Just mute your mic, if you don't want to talk. Leave your ears on.

Fwiw, nowadays I often turn on voice when I go wandering on the grid, without intention to talk, just to see if I hear ANYONE. (I don't bother to mute the mike, I leave it on push-to-talk and then just never push). I even did this lately going to the ETD sale. The only place I ever hear anybody is in newbie help areas, and that is just idle chatter, if not outright griefing! Where DO people use voice, anyway? Other than with their own friends, which I do occasionally do with a couple of folks who prefer voice. Even the Lindens don't seem to use it much.

Ack. Sartre-esque at best! And rather depressing now that I think about it! Of course, ignorance is sometimes bliss.

Not last night though. Didn't hear anyone talking, though I think I heard a watch alarm go off at one point.

From: Lindal Kidd Imnotgoing, I still don't understand why you wouldn't want to listen... Please don't ask me to explain. It's not a matter of want. It's a psychological condition that I'm not proud of. I kinda spelled it out in my earlier posts. Sorry. From: Cherry Czervik Nope. People will treat you pretty much the same tbh. I'm not so worried about how I'm treated. Actually I'm amazed at how well I'm treated by people in SL. I really don't have a single real horror story. My mute list has only ever had one name... And I deleted it last month. I just want to be accommodating to people who chose to communicate in a way that I'm unable to function in. I want to have the opportunity to peacefully walk away when I don't fit in. Crud... you all get me talking all serious and stuff... (>o<

Excuse me for bumping my ancient thread... But... Without Mods, I'm sure it isn't the worst thing to happen on this forum lately. (^_^)
This past week I've been having an epiphany with my ability to tolerate voices. These past two days have been heart-pounding events of me being able to function socially in ways I've never been before. It was exciting, scary, and fun to hear the voices of some of the people I known these past 3 months. The range of accents and characters was more diverse than I expected.
My SL social life has now completely exceeded my RL. I apologize if I'm being annoying about it, I'm just so excited! \(^_^)/ I hope I'm not moving to fast into a crash-and-burn. I'm working on the courage to plug the mic in. I'm sure it's going to take a few tries on my part to adjust to being that outward. And I'm sure most people will want to cut their ears off after hearing me speak. Even my family says I have an English dialect of my own... (=_=)
Kudos++ to Linden Labs for giving a wreck like me a social outlet!!!!! \(^_^)/ ... \(^_^)/

(I admit only reading the begining and end of this thread.) I just wanted to say thanks and no excuses needed for one of the most positive and hopeful post I've seen in the forums in quite awhile.

And I don't voice to the customer, merely listen. I tried it in the beginning, and frankly in my opinion it's not good. Too much mouth juice noise for me. So now while I leave it on I do occasionally have to mute the person who can't be bothered to set their mic to "push to talk" or who thinks it's cute to blare their home music over their mic. That said, the white dot over my head doesn't seem to make any difference really, but I don't hang out with a lot of voice users.

From: Brenda Connolly Then call me cold. I agree. Sympathy is a nice thing, but evntually you do have to stop whining and come out of the fetal position and move on. Most of the Voice uses here are unapologetic about it, as they should be. They have their vision of what SL is to them. It enhances their experience, and that is what we are here for. Most of them are accomodating to non voicers. There are some asshats, but there are also some on the other side who are walking around with some chip on their shoulder because they don't use the feature and feel the world is out to get them. I know not everyone can be the thick skinned bitch I am, so take it for what it's worth, considering the source. Amen! I agree with you Brenda.

While my issues were not exactly the same, I also had some social anxiety issues that voice helped me with. I had a little bit of a head start because I started using voice in There.com for a few years ago, but I had a similar experience. Take your time and talk when you feel comfortable. I only typed for a good while before I started to talk. Heh heh, something a little funny though - I felt more comfortable talking if my avatar had a drink in his hand. lol I don't know why, but it helped me. Take care Imnotgoing and all the best!
