From: Michael Bigwig OK. If you're in understanding and agree with me...I take it back...a few of you agree and understand. I'm a hypocrite too...I tend to work in hyperbole also. I agree to a point. For instance I was just chatting with a friend and got talking to someone else who was there and the conversation got silly. I have a new friend, the process was accelerated somewhat perhaps.

From: Dinalya Dawes This shows me that the last post I did to you (page 35) did indeed get missed as it sort of answers your question. I will toss it in here anyway. It is what it is? The absolute truth of it? Its not as if we are arguing the color of an apple or something that is in its purest form fact based for pity sake. Seriously, that isnt seen as being open minded, at all. Nor does the post I am replying to. It is the absolute truth because you say so? Or because you believe it to be? Urm, that isnt being open minded that is flat out saying 'My opinion is right, I wish you would change yours and see it my way' At least...it is seen as you saying that in MY opinion. In my view, voice is more intense, you get more emotion, but you can still learn about someone without it. I dont have to believe it the exact way you do for you to go on believing it. I just dont understand why you are so stubborn, so fixed in your mindset to give even the tiniest inch of admitance that it might not 'just' be your way. It just isnt what it is. It is what you see it as. That doesnt make it right or wrong, it makes it your view. Let others have theirs without having to come in in order to make them see it as absolute truth. Sure, come in and go over your opinion and debate, but trying to force someone to change their view to be like yours makes people fiesty. OK, yes you got me. You got me...I'm busted. How about this...how about you guys just trust me...lol...as a profit. lol. I'm kidding. This concept and debate is very complex...and is quite vague in its nature. You can try to describe feelings all you want in text...but they will never be received the way a person could have told you on the spot with their voice. First of all...when you read something, too much of YOU is in that interpretation and inner movie...so knowing the authors true feelings is nearly impossible...they can only persuade you to relate as best you can via personal experience and emotional memory. But...when a person tells you directly how they feel and what they think, you get ALL of who they are, in the raw. You don't have to believe in this...I'm just saying it's how I see the world.

From: Michael Bigwig Good. We are on the same playing field--so you understand then that, in the real...there are such things as 'ghetto pimps.'
Because, whether you hate me for actually 'going there' or not, the fact is stereotypes have been created, and etched in stone. The exist. So much so that much of Comedy (and Commedia especially) have based heavily on the concept of stereotype.
And connecting the two points...hearing someone's 'ghetto pimp' style of speech will tell you much about who a person really is. Let's also keep in mind, our parents and our environment are not the sole sculptor of someones personality...there is always choice. And the way someone chooses to speak, and talk...is exactly what I'm trying to say...
God...there is so much about the way a person can say a single word...that text can not even touch. This be the point. Of course there are ghetto pimps; there are ghettoes, and there are pimps, and there are pimps in ghettoes. And there are plenty of stereotypes in literature and theatre and society. And if somebody speaks in a certain way in a certain genre, you may be able to gather something about what the author intended to be assumed about their character (this works rather poorly in older pieces, of course, given that the understanding of the stereotypical characteristics is not shared, and often a lot of annotation is required). Of course, more sophisticated works usually play on the mere existence of these stereotypes and confound expectations. The issue here is that you are addressing stereotypes created in literature, moulded by social prejudice, authorial prejudice and random chance, as if they were _real_. You are apparently claiming that if somebody sounds "ghetto" that means more than "they grew up in the ghetto and still have that mode of speech". There are a million stereotypes out there - the greedy Jew, the saintly priest, the worthy nobleman, the savage African, the Wily Oriental Gentleman, the Turkish import-export merchant, the Jamaican drug dealer, and so on - and they simply do not work, because ascribing characteristics to people on a simple linguistic basis only works if they _aren't real people_ and have been constructed to fit in with an imaginary code. If you want people to behave in a predictable fashion based on their language I suggest some sort of _game_, or interactive fiction.

Say for a minute that everything Mike has espoused is true, and I agree with a lot of it in essence. Voice is all it is being made out to be. Great. Enjoy using it. But some people don't want to use it. WHY DOES THAT BOTHER PEOPLE SO?and the same is try on the other side. Use SL the way you want, and stop worrying how someone else is using it.

I often feel myself aging while they type, goodness. With other people I know, I wouldnt dream of going into voice with them, my kids hootin and making ruckus beind me is embarassing.

By saying people sound "Ghetto-pimp" what you are really saying is they talk like poor blacks from the inner city. And you are even saying that people will automatically make assumptions based on it. I don't see how that is a positive thing.

So, if you talk to a phone sex operator, you know "who" that person is from hearing their voice? I don't think so....at all. You could be talking to a 300 lb man with a hairy back who just happens to have the ability to sound like a sexy blonde Jessica Simpson look-alike. Some men do have the voice to do it. That 300 lb man with the hairy back could also be a NASA engineer in his day job, not the dizzy blonde with the DD's that you're picturing.
If someone wants to misrepresent who, and what, they are, they can do it just as easily in voice as they can in text. I trapped an old boyfriend that way one time.....called him up, disguised my voice (made it all breathy and young sounding) and told him his brother gave me his number. He never even knew he was talking to me. (sneaky, I know, and not ethical, but it was what needed to be done at the time)
Just sayin'

I don't see how that is a positive thing. If an astronaut came walking out of the space shuttle, took his helmet off and started talking like he was raised in the ghetto then you would be very surprised. We judge people by the way they talk. We're often correct in our judgements too. This is why we do it. "Houston, the eagle has landed. Yo! Diggit!"

From: Colette Meiji Actually I heard on the radio this morning that many Phone sex operators jobs are being filled by Senior Citizens. Exactly my point. And would someone really recognize that it was their grandma they were talking to? In my opinion, hearing someone's voice does not mean the relationship is free of deception, and does also not mean that you know a lot more about that person than what you could learn from text chat. If you're not face to face, living with a person, you never really know them. And even living with them, there can still be surprises that pop up. I've heard that Ted Bundy was very well-spoken and articulate.

From: Ordinal Malaprop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnylM1hI2jc That video was nice... My case isn't as extreme at that person... I can still talk to people, but only in person and still with a lot of discomfort. But some still look at me like a freakshow. I don't want to use SL as some sort of date-hub. I don't want to sleep with people, SL or RL. While I am getting to know people, I prefer doing it at a distance. Someday, something might happen where I may have to fall out of SL and I don't want to hurt anyone in the process. I do want to get over some major barriers in my own life and SL seems to be the tool to do so. Not without flaws... My own continuing flaws that are too easily revealed in the way SL works. For now, I'm leeching off the system to provide myself with the first social anything I've ever done. SL is a small extension of the world that I fail to function in. The world can't be 100% full of flawless socialites that can associate with perfect strangers without any barriers. I am impressed by those who are, but I don't fit that mold. I do hope, someday, to adjust to being able to listen to voice. It will take much more effort for me to consider connecting a mic. Until then... I just want to have some sort of tool that lets me know who is on voice so that I don't have to disturb them by asking. I want to be able to take voice users' freedom to speak without interruption into consideration... That's all. (^_^)

Or only if I "sounded" Hispanic? Well, if you roll up in a low-rider full of your Homies and yell "Heeey Gringo," certain assumptions are going to be made. In all seriousness: Making assumptions *only* on color/accent is far from right. However, I'd argue that making an assumption on immediate observed behavior isn't necessarily racist. "Damn Mexicans. Breed like rabbits." = racist "These people mean to do me bodily harm unless I can bullshit my way out." = not racist. YMMV.

YMMV. SO how do you observe behavior over the phone? You are only hearing what they are saying. You could be talking to some very sophisticated sounding person on the phone who is busy embezzling money while chatting with you about Brahms.

Does that mean people who were raised poor from the inner city and still speak that way are stupid? Or Does it really mean that the establishment (in this case Nasa/military) holds the same sort of prejudice Mike was referring to?

From: Colette Meiji SO how do you observe behavior over the phone? You are only hearing what they are saying. You can't. Unless they're obvious. "I'm going to come over and fuck you up" is generally a giveaway. Can I backtrack and switch "observed behaviour" to "situational conditions?" I do make assumptions when I get an Indian accent when calling somewhere for tech support. From: Colette Meiji You could be talking to some very sophisticated sounding person on the phone who is busy embezzling money while chatting with you about Brahms. Important question -- are they going to give me a cut? How many serial murderers have been described as "polite, quiet young men?"
