Ohh I dunno,

I think I have a pretty accurate depiction of the way you are by your posts on these forums.

You'd want my babies in RL. But on the forums, you want to kill them. I know!

How one talks is much more relevant to who they are...there are FAR more clues to who a person is, in their voice, as opposed to what they can THINK UP to write given the time. We can all be poets if we have time to gracefully produce our sentences...

But the way someone talks...their voice, their improvisational choices of dialog, their word usage, their verbal lexicon, their inflections, their tone...THESE things tell me much much more about who a person is...

The soul is revealed in verbal communication...the intellect in written. Or something like that.

If someone talks like a ghetto pimp...that's who they are. It doesn't mean they are stupid...it just illustrates a lifestyle...and much can be devised from a lifestyle choice.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have read here. (Admittedly, I am excluding quite a bit here because it is beneath consideration. Read that as "one of the things closest to the boundary of contemptual dismissal out of hand, but not quite over it".) Clearly some people are capable of far greater expressive feats in text than when they use their poor human voices; the literary field is full of examples. Clearly some people are appallingly fluent and charming when speaking and also appalling human beings.

Does "talking like a ghetto pimp" mean that they interject with "oh, you want any crack whores? I got plenty" every now and then? Or does it, by any faint chance, mean that they have an accent and dialect arising from a poor neighbourhood?

I read that in the second world war, morse code operators could 'hear' the agent's mood, state of mind, even whether they were telling the truth, from the tiny pauses and changes of speed, maybe spelling mistakes, and vocabulary in tapped messages.

Amongst telegraph operators it was known as the "fist" of the sender.

This is a good point.

Also from the later discussion, what exactly does a Lesbian sound like?

I'm not _entirely_ sure quite how that is relevant, but I'm sure you speak to a lot of brain surgeons. It's a pity that they do not seem able to help you though.

Ice T isn't a cartoon character. He uses the dialect that was used where he was raised, influenced by education and life experience.

Just like everyone does.

Ordinal has an excellent point. Use of that term is discriminatory.

I highly doubt you are a brain surgeon either 2K. Considering some of the things you come up with, I'd find it nearly impossible to believe.

Imnotgoing, if you don't mind the dot, just enable Voice Chat. If someone asks you why you're still typing instead of speaking, just tell them "I don't have a mic at this computer". I've had several conversations where the other side voiced and I typed...which is my preferred method of communicating.

I don't understand why you don't "want to hear a live human voice" or "mislead someone into thinking you're listening"...with the dot over your head, they WILL assume you can hear them. But if you're set on NOT hearing them, you can turn down the Voice volume slider, and then you won't.

And Gordon, Voice does not cause lag.

I don't want to deal with voice, except under unusual circumstances. I live with other people, and don't really want to spam them with my amusements. My computer has a decent headset, but I use a headset at work and would like to give my ears a chance to regain their normal shape. And my computer suffers from lag at odd and unpredictable intervals, so I don't want to overload it.

FWIW, I use dictation software when I'm writing or editing, and that software DOES slow the system overall. (I close this software when in SL.) I suspect that voice can cause client-side lag on some computers.

It would be great if those who don't use voice had a way of knowing who around them is using it, just as a courtesy. Voice users can see who's typing.

I don't see anything wrong with voice, I just want the choice. I spend enough time trying to walk through walls while the lag monster eats the scenery that I'd like a way to avoid looking stupid where this is concerned.

It was bad enough being yellow-orange for so many weeks...

I met an international 'set' on the text only Starship Titanic forum. The game was standalone. We mostly all agreed that we got more fun out of the forum than the game. We had a Brit sub-set that got closer. Arwen, Morgaine, WordSmith, Gargravaar, Rocket, Captain Amsterdam, RosyPosy and some others. We typed, we read, we loved the 'company' so much we decided to meet up so we did. We knew we were going to get on fantastically. We met. Many times. Arwen lives quite close, Morgaine a fair way away but moved closer since, walking distance from where WordSmith lived in fact. Yes, lived.

Many of us went to his funeral. Morgaine was maid of honour at his widows subsequent remarriage. She's my fiancee. We've not seen Arwen for over a year now but stay in daily contact.

I'm not anti-voice. I'm all for FaTeke's live and let live ... excellent post thankyou!

2k, you crack me up sometimes. I'm not saying you are utterly wrong. Why do we have to polarise ourselves into yes or no all the time when a maybe can be just as good?

Added: I mustn't leave out Alpo .. San Francisco! She came over and met WordSmith and the rest of us the year he died. Still a great friend

Because the monkeys borked the visuals to show only black and white. ;)

As to those saying you can't get to know people through text........ you mean I don´t actually know any of the fantastic friends I've made here? You know..... the ones I share laughter and tears with, the ones I spend time with one way or another every day, the ones that care about each other so much they worry when they are not well, and share good times and bad alike. The ones that throw parties for each other, exchange cards and gifts over Christmas..... I could go on, but I think I may have made my point.

(yeah, I feel strongly about this, because I have some very special friends ....

All the people I have met in RL so far haven't been different fundamentally to how they presented in text in SL or forums.

As for making the dot visible for people with no voice active, I would guess there is some technical issue that is too boring for anyone to fix, like you can only receive the required data if you are connected to the voice system.
