Maybe we worry too much about trolling posts.

There's no reward for distinguishing the honest question from thet one with hidden motivation.

If there is a potentially legitimate question within the original post that could be a legitimate question that someone else has on one's mind, then answering the legitimate part of the question might be helpful to lurkers reading the thread, even if the original poster didn't actually care about the question.

If you see flame-bait in the question, just do your best to resist the bait.

I really dont buy the "your not really there" slant, I mean 3D vr is a whole new ball game...

Look at it this way, if your standing talking to someone and that person walks right up to you so they are inches away from your avatar what do you do?

Stand there and keep chatting?

Or tap the back arrow a few times to put space between you and the other AV.

I'm betting 95% will back off as you "feel" your space is being violated even though its not really... but your brain precieves that you are there and you need your space.

Also, Rape has very little to do with "sex". it has a lot to do with power. same with Assault.. you dont even have to be touched to have someone charged with assualt.. you just have to "feel" threatened.

Am I the only one who wondered how someone who never even logged on would know about "caging"?

When I put "Second Life harassment of noobs" the first link that appears is:

Maybe I just keep a higher level of detachment about it than most. You make good points, but I don't agree with them, so we'll leave it at that.

In case anyone is still looking for real help...

Get an email account just for your SL avatar, through gmail or something similar. That will give you a RL way to interact with your SL friends without giving up any RL contact information. Sometimes it's good to be able to contact people without going in-world. Also, it may be worth checking which email websites are or aren't blocked by your workplace before you set up your account.

Welcome to the Forums!Sometimes somebody will welcome you to the Forums. It's all down-hill from there. ;)

Thanks! Active forum though for there to be 3 pages of info before I could reply even once :)

I didn't know about the sitting thing, thanks! Good information all around. So the knock, knock thing isn't true? I was told that by a SL researcher.

edit: 6 pages (WOW)

Congratulations on asking for advice before starting.

It seemed like a smart thing to do :)

Especially considering that I'm studying SL harassment for an article.

There is no rape in Second Life. If you decline to get on a pose ball or grant animation permissions, nothing like that can be done to your av.

Edit: Damn it, day late and a dollar short...

I know it's not a rape, though if someone were tricked and didn't know how to stop it, I understand how they could feel violated. The question is, was it simply a matter of social engineering (that's "tricking someone" in lay-speak) or was it a hack/combination?

The reason this is important is that part of my article will be a list of things new players should watch out for.

This happens to me quite often, and I never really think all that much of it. The only time I move is if they have on so many prim clothing pieces that it's ruining my computer's performance, so I step back and turn away from them a little so that they're not smackdab in front of me.
Frankly if you can feel violated by someone in this world you really need to step back from the computer and think for a minute.

This is a very funny thread, though. It seems that the OP was in high spirits.

Assault ???

Your avatar can be assaulted in SL whether you consent or not in a build area. Its done with a follower thats stuck to you. The baddies sit on the follower and play their animation. When it happens, ask them to smile for the camera and AR them.

Then, because its a build area and because you are allowed to defend yourself in any world, either beat the sad so an so's avatar to a pulp or ... like I do, stick a follower box on its head. Just a plain plywood box because thats all they are worth.

A tragic tale.
06-23-2008 07:32
The incident I'm about to recount was a very difficult experience for me, so please bear with me if my emotions get the better of me and I need to take a break now and again.

The other day I was in Aherne not long after I arrived in SL, I was just minding my own business when this woman IM'd me. She seemed nice (although she didn't seem to be wearing much clothing).

Anyway she asked if I wanted to go to her house for tea and biscuits, she said she had some spare clothes which she could give me and also some other tools which would make my first few days in SL much easier.

Anyway, she disappeared and next thing a little message popped up asking me to Teleport to her location. I thought she was my friend, so I clicked ok.

When the screen returned, I had arrived in what seemed a very nice (if somewhat dark and eerie) castle. The lady in question now seemed to be wearing nothing at all, except for some strange leather belt type things wrapped across her tummy and upper body.

She still seemed pleasant enough and asked me to sit down by right-clicking and sitting on the chair next to her. She then said she was going to give me a gift and that I should accept it.

The next thing I knew, was that my avatar was acting against my will and moving to a strange wooden horse contraption.. my poor little avatar proceed to straddle the said device.. exposing its most vulnerable and until now unseen pink areas.

When I focussed on my hostess to she if she could help, a strange metamorphisis was occurring.. her pleasing female curves were changing.. she had grown much taller.. her chest expanded and sprouted thick wiry hair.. her pretty face contorted into that of a snarling, drooling wolf-like creature..

Worse of all when my gaze travelled down her now grossly muscled and hirsute torso I almost fainted at the sight of the thick, pulsating.... *sob .. oh God sorry.. I can't even bring myself to describe it..

Now, if only I'd stopped touching myself long enough to Log off, TP away, or simply unplug my PC from the mains, I could have saved myself from the violent abuse my sorry virtual rectum encountered that horrible day.

However I was either so slow witted, or indeed enjoying the scene far too much to think of such straightforward remedies to my situation.

I hope by passing on what happened to me I can save you from a similar fate.

Peace be with you all.

...Ahern...
You had me at "Ahern". Try Waterhead next... Even Jerry Springer can't touch that place. Though, I met a nice Gor guy (oxymoron?) there yesterday. (^_^)y

Fighting back is a good way to get yourself AR'd and possibly suspended. That's the goal of some griefers...you fight back and then they and their friends send multiple ARs and, since LL seems to pay more attention to quantity than anything else, you're the one who gets punished.

I could see some one getting Gaslighted here, to say Rape cannot happen in a virtual world is like saying obscene phone calls can't happen, because you can just hang up right?... people tend to underestimate the power of the spoken (or in this case, typed) word.

I just wanted to point out that I really love this analogy. Very well said :)

However, I agree that it shouldn't be called "rape". Maybe "virtual rape" at best or at least "virtual violation".

Like everything in SL (or RL), its just a matter of knowledge. I go to Money island where they have a 5L/10 min bench. The bench ejects you after 10 mins so you have to be quick to resit again but that is the time I go through my inventory and even try on a few different outfits and see how I can use accessories with them. Lots of real People there (no bots) because the owners keep a close eye on the bench. But Ya, if you don't know better and stand-up, you can lose your place real quick.

JulieAnne

So whats with the benches and camping? Why do you make money for doing these things?

We also have two weekly classes that may help the original poster: "Dealing with Griefers" and "Second Life Consumer Skills". All NCI classes are free and open to everyone.

How do you do those? What's NCI (everyone uses the acronym but doesn't say what it stands for). Is this something you can only do from in-game?
