But the point is, you can't be virtually sexually assaulted. You can't be made to remove your clothes, they can't be removed for you. You can't be forced to sit on a poseball, or even forced to play an animation. Frankly at the very most, some naked noob with an everhard penis could bump up against you, which frankly, is sad if anything. One TP and you're gone.

If something like that bothers you, maybe you should go back to reading the Reader's Digest and watching Wheel of Fortune. Sorry, I can't accept this notion of Virtual Sexual Assault.

I don't mean to make light of it either, but I just buy the idea that anything that happens to your avatar is happening "To You". It isn't. You can immerse yourself all you want, but in the end it is just a bunch of computer generated animations on the screen. At least it is to me. But others may see it differently, and I realize that.

If you see someone with the legend "Second Life Mentor" over their heads, they are volunteers there to help you and answer your questions. You can trust any items they send you.
Saw two on Help Island. They were nice. One gave me eyes, hair and a walk animation.

From: Lindal Kidd
Your progression should be something like this: Orientation Island ---> Help Island (where you can learn to open a boxed item, and pick up some freebies) ---> Welcome Area (which is likely to be crowded and chaotic).
I made it from Orientation Island to Help Island and crashed. I built a plane there. I think it might be the ugliest plane I've ever seen, but it is a plane and it moves (using the free plane script in the store). So you can do more on Help Island than just opening boxes and picking up stuff.

From: Lindal Kidd
Once you are at the Welcome Area, your Map and Search tools become useful (they do not have full functionality on Orientation and Help Islands). Use them to find interesting places to go.
The Map and search worked on Orientation Island, and Help Island, though I crashed on Help Island so I do not know if it would actually do anything if I tried to go anywhere. Did notice something like 7 Help Islands on the Map, 49 Orientation Islands, something called "Bare Rose", some "Santuary" islands, then some large chunks of land.

Haha, one of my guy friends runs a female av the vast majority of the time...he kissed instead of hugging me one night not too long ago and I was actually a little startled. I know he's male in RL (we've met) and they're just 'toons, but I still had a brief "I don't kiss girls!" reaction. :D

Darien, let me clarify something here. I stated it gave the appearance of a sexual act was happening not that I was forced to engage in such an act. The guy, like I said probably used this as a tactic to force someone to TP away. In my case that would've caused me to have given up my lucrative camping chair. I probably was at 12L/3 minutes. I don't know if you ever camped at Gold Rush (or camped at all) but it was very competitive to the point someone already in the camping chair would bid off or sell (I know it sounds silly) their spot in the chair. Additionally, ppl would "sit" on the back or the arm of the chair so if you allowed the time to expire you are automatically ejected from the chair that person would already be right there to actually sit in the camping chair.

I agree with the other post, whatever happens to my avie happens to me. A person's sl experience is unique to them as yours is to you. If one does not want to put up with unwanted advances, they shouldn't and there are steps to alleviate those types of advance. Some ppl like in rl more thick skinned that others. Perhaps you are one of them and good for you. But, those that aren't their feelings should be taken into consideration and some of the suggestion provided in this forum are wonderful. Sometimes without realizing it, one can become cold and callous behind a keyboard and not even know it.

This is very true, and it does diminish the word rape when it is also used to refer unwanted avatar animations or undesirably high tier charges.

At the same time, just because you are not "there" doesn't mean that in game sexual harassment is always something that the victim can/should easily shrug off. Most would not claim that being harassed by obscene phone calls is just fun and games. Anonymity in SL gives some protection, of course (said phone caller is more likely to know where one lives).

But it's certainly worthy of ARing.

definitely worth ARing. But not worth curling up into a ball under your desk and trembling in fear, as some seem to make it out to be.

Katalin, I'm sure it's fine if they had the sl mentor tag on. You can't have that tag unless one is really a mentor. I suspect you have to ask to join the group, probably go through some kind of mentoring training and since Orientation Island is created by LL themselves, I think you are ok.

Thank-you. The walk was nice. A lot better than the default. I spent most of my time on Help Island building a plane and looking through the library. Found some neat hair in the male folders (I should note that I looked at them after I went through all the female ones; the best as is female one was the one I appeared as, the musician one, though I liked the musician male hair better than the female hair). And now I'm actually wearing the male elf outfit, one of the female hairs I think, and the default female skin and eyes. The shape is slightly tweaked, as the hands looked enormous.

I just signed up, but haven't entered the game yet because I think I should research a little first. What in your experience are some of the most common things people can do to harass someone who's new?

Caging would be one example and another would be the situation where someone uses a "heart?" and if you respond it begins sex (I believe something like this led to the well known "rape" case in the news a while back).

I also heard something about saying "Knock Knock" and if you reply "Who's there" that gives them access to your computer.

There was also something about "zombies" where if you accept an item from someone it might give them control over your avatar. I seem to remember this also being a possible cause of the "rape" case.

Any tips?

Yeh. Don't believe everything ya hear. The only example you site above that's even nearly possible is caging, and that's pretty useless these days.

So I guess rape is a light-hearted, non-serious topic.

(followed by lotsa advice that is actually very good n' well presented.)

Personaly tho', I think that if anyone is truely terrified by anythin' that happens in SL, they need ta jus' log off.

LOG OFF NOW!

Am I the only one who wondered how someone who never even logged on would know about "caging"?

Only kinda. I know a couple of people who go trollin' Teh Innerwebs for forums for for games b'fore they play 'em. That's usually my 2nd step after joinin' a mmorpg or buyin' a single-player game.

I was at Gold Rush Casino (remember the glorious days of gambling and camping there) i had walked away from my laptop in rl. When i returned this guy was on me which gave the impression I was giving him oral sex. He had attached himself to the chair. After a few shouts of get off, I A/R'd him and some kind person gave me one of those orbs that prevented anyone from sitting on me. In retrospect, I believe it was his way of trying to force ppl out of the camping chair, because at that time at GR it was hard to get a camping chair at the slot machines. So while rape in truest sense can't happen sl, certains simulations of acts can. BTW before anyone says well you had to give permission, this occurred in 2006 and I there was no blue box populated on my laptop screen asking me for permission for this guy to do this.

There are several items that will allow others to simulate various sex acts, or indeed, any animation at all. Thus makin' it appear they're doin' ta ya whatever their twisted mind wishes. There's one hud I know of, that will ask for anims permissions ONCE, n' 'members 'em, until or unless the person that gave the permission revokes 'em.
I've been groped a few times - but ultimately the jokes on them 'cos I'm a guy IRL
I know several guys who use gal AVs. Doesn' bother me any. Many of 'em want the iinfo kept private, some will tell close friends, others'll put it in their profile. Makes no d'fference ta me, I've groped 'em all.
After all you wouldn't randomly grab a girls private parts in RL so why should SL be any different? At least I would hope that you dont
Well maybe 'cause SL ain' RL? I might well grope sommeone that appears gropeable ta me. SL or RL, it'll depend on where we are.

Hmm.... I didn't know that. Perhaps that may have been the case especially at that time I was rather new to the game and experimented in a lot of things. So that could've been it. I know once I got that don't sit on me orb, it never happened again. Now, it will never happen because camping is a complete waste of time unless I am rearranging my inventory.

Crashing on Help Island has been mentioned a couple of times. I hope that wasn't much of a deterrence, because I'll bet that the Help Islands are among the crashiest places in SL. (For that matter, last Groups-mule alt I made had a hell of a time getting off *Orientation* Island because the client kept crashing there. But that was back when my clients were crashing all the time anyway.)

As for the whole thread being an elaborate troll: at first I thought it was just far too tedious for troll-lols. But in retrospect, references to "the 'rape' case" seem a bit obsessive. And I can see how it could spark a flamefest far worse than the disagreements we've seen so far. Just add a post from a victim of some brutal RL sexual assault taking umbrage at any virtual analogy to their suffering, and we'd have all the ingredients for a new Godwin's Law. I can imagine such a development might be gratifying to a pyromaniac of the Interwebz.

Perhaps it's not so cut-and-dried. There's stuff that can happen without you needing to do absolutely anything but stand there.

I was hanging out with some adult friends at a place (enjoy the abiguity); one of the people present was somebody that we more "tolerated" rather than liked. The reason is because he has really annoying animations and sound gestures that he thinks are just awesome, but which everyone else thinks are stupid and annoying.

One of the things he did to my friend (if he'd done it on me I woulda AR'd him) allowed him to select my friend's av as a "target", and the idiot's av "jumped" on him and starting humping away violently, to the accompaniment of related sound effects. My friend (who was of course just standing there, and hadn't clicked any poseballs, or clicked "yes" on any prompts) tried to move/walk away, but this didn't work, because the idiot's av just stayed hanging on him and, well, "animating", until the animation was over. The idiot thought it was absolutely hilarious. I thought it was hilarious when my friend ejected him. He didn't ban the guy; though he said he would if he tried pulling that nonsense again. Someone taking a photo of the particular incident and its surrounding context could've caused a lot of problems for me and my friends.

Such a thing isn't rampant, obviously - I haven't seen an animation like it before or since - but it exists. And yeah, unless it's your land, the only thing to do about it is TP away. Having to TP away sucks when you're hanging out with people. And that anim was just offensive, I don't care what the context.

The people who are vulnerable to this sort of thing are, of course, the newbies, who dpon't know what to do, or are so flustered they don't think of tp'ing or logging off. Depending on their personalities, they can find it very upsetting, as you can see from some of the posts here. It would not surprise me if some new Residents are driven away by this sort of thing, never to return. Once they do know, of course, it ceases to be a problem. Knowledge is the answer; help out a newbie today.
