From: Benski Trenkins
In highschool, I had an English teacher that pointed out to us, that it was her goal to make us comfortable in communicating in English, and that, for the goals of what we needed it for, grammar, punctuation and all that stuff, was not important.
Benski, many years ago I arrived in a foreign country with maybe 5 of their words, and was mispronouncing them. I was thrown into the school system and did my best to get on with it academically and socially. I would run into the odd person who would pretend they couldn't understand ANYTHING I was saying, and a few that liked to harshly correct me. I spent a lot of time listening and could understand the bulk of what was being said around me within 3 months. When my fellows started to realize this, they suggested I just start speaking whatever bastardized version of their rlanguage I had gathered and let it improve as a matter of course. I remain grateful for their patience and humor. Now when I revisit my old friends and their families and continue to speak their half forgotten language, we all laugh at how much we have all forgotten and how quickly it returns. The children are the best to converse with though. They mirror my poor skills in their language, and speak to me in a way I can understand. After all, it is the exchange that is important in the experience, not worrying about precision. Keep chuggin' Ben

From: Pserendipity Daniels Can you let me have a copy of the unwritten rules then? LMAO The reason they are unwritten is because they shouldn't HAVE to be written; they are a priori common sense to anyone with two brain cells to rub together, which explains your situation. That I had to write them is indicative of the need to deal with idiots like you as a preventative measure because, as you so aptly demonstrate, there are plenty who like to meta-game. Even some where the meta-game *IS* the game, to them, and when they decide to hang out their rules-lawyer shingle ("If it isn't in the written rules, it's OK!" , I have it as a ready-made tree trunk with which to pummel them. From: someone What ho! I didn't realise the antipodean colonials were still using the vernacular of the English sporting classes? Top hole! That's OK, it is only the top of the tip of the iceberg representing the veritable cornucopia of subjects of which you have little to no realization.

That is, I presume, somewhere else, where you are actually able to exercise your obviously desperate need to satisfy your inferiority complex by enforcing your views on others? Not here, where you have absolutely no power at all. Where you conspicuously fail to exert your self-professed moral control over someone you (mistakenly) consider inadequate. I am afraid all you are doing is demonstrating your inability to annoy me, whereas it is palpable that my simplest posts disrupt your existence. Pep (You are not big enough and not clever enough. Keep chuggin' Ben Any non-dutch person that tries to talk to me in my native language, no matter how they stumble with it, gets my respect purely for the effort alone. It's also easy to attack someone on the internet, specially if you have the upper hand as far as the language goes, but some should look and see how many here express to me how much they apreceate my efforts. Those that do apreceate mine and with that, the efforts all ESLers show here, those get respect back in return. Thank you

From: Pserendipity Daniels If you meant to say what I think you just did, then it is not just your language skills, but your logical capabilities, that are badly flawed. You have to speak Dutch to assess someone's skill in English?
Pep (This could revolutionise language education!!!)

I am afraid all you are doing is demonstrating your inability to annoy me, whereas it is palpable that my simplest posts disrupt your existence. I never claimed to have any power here, contrary to your presumptuous ASSumptions. No, I believe the point of the exercise was to explore your fragile little psyche and self-justifications. In that, I think I excelled quite nicely. Apparently, I make your existence meaningful; after all, you're still here playing the tit-for-tat game. Well, attempting to play, anyway. I guess when you're down 40-love at 0-5 in the set, there's that burning desire to "show" me up. Yeah, you're really achieving your ends there. Not. Shall we all hold hands and chant "power to the underdog!" now? Will that help your bruised little ego? From: someone Pep (You are not big enough and not clever enough. Keep trying though. Even Ava is fascinated to see how people fail to disturb my equilibrium.) I know, your only consolation here is convincing yourself of the illusion that you're winning. There there, poor Poop; everything will be alright. *patpats*

Pep (Are you a masochist? You will feel right at home here, then, with Talarus.) Nah, I'm just mildly curious what really makes you tick, underneath the dated humour, smug detatchment, and petty nit-picking.

From: 3Ring Binder all you damm alts confuse the hell out of me. I see. Anyone who isn't a resident forum poster, part of the furnature, has a post count below a thousand, or doesn't have a witty/funny/random quote in ther signature, is an alt. I'm guessing post count is also a valuable currency here, and gives credit to the content of a post too?

I'm guessing post count is also a valuable currency here, and gives credit to the content of a post too? Not at all. I have recently made some interesting friends because of the forums. All with embarrassing post counts. Unless you choose to do it now, no one has called me an alt (to my face, and less likely behind it). Not in the forums anyway

Will that help your bruised little ego? Talarus, Pep's ego isn't fragile. His psyche isn't fragile. He excels in self justification. Right or wrong, I don't consider there much to pick apart at this point. As a whelp, I humbly suggest the ignore button.

His ego and psyche are quite fragile if the only thing keeping him going in the forums are these little tit-for-tats. I post, he responds. Just like a well-trained dog. Pavlov would be proud.

I respect you, which makes it awkward personally for me to disagree with you in a public setting. Ignore buttons are our own choices. I don't tend to mute or ignore people unless under extreme circumstances either. I guess that's jim-dandy that you're 'enjoying' this, but for me I find it astonishing it has gone on this long and whose knives remain sharp

Yeah especially with people egging him on and challenging him. I rather think he takes it as a call to arms.
Oh and by the way... it took me a long time to figure out Pep was a certain poster too, and not something different people were adding a the bottom of thier posts. I thought it was something like adding a particularly pointed p.s.

From: Rioko Bamaisin Did we ever figure out what Pep means? Here is the dictionary definition: Pep noun: 1. A captious individual who cannot resist the urge to correct a spelling and/or grammar mistakes even in informal settings. After pointing out the linguistic shortcomings in others, a Pep feels a strange sense of twisted and unconstructive intelligentsia delight. In reality, they are making someone else feel bad for no reason and unintentionally implying that their "superior" grammar skills are all they have to show for a wasted liberal arts education. While proper grammar usage is all well and good, a Pep cavils even insignificant errors in English to somehow win an argument, or create an argument. Of course, rather than being genuinely persuasive in an argument, pointing out English errors is a weak attack only on the typist's credibility and never has any bearing on the underlying premises and assertions therein. In other words, this is simply a disguised ad hominem argument which intelligent and logical people disregard. 2. A generic internet sphincter who proofreads dictionaries for fun, also known as a Grammar Nazi. All forums and message boards have at least one of them. Nobody actually likes them, but tend to tolerate them nonetheless out of disinterest in actually trying to reason with them and the dull exchange of irrelevant monologue that will likely ensue afterwards as a result of giving them the attention they crave. 3. Slang: a testis ............... Shakespeare: What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculty! Pep: Speak in complete sentences, you idiot. Shakespeare: The ability to communicate both colourfully and effectively is much more admirable then perfect grammar so stop sucking Webster's bell end, you Grammar Nazi.
