I don't think closing the general was a cop-out to prevent criticism of LL. (After all, there is still plenty of that on the blog, which anybody can read.)

The old General was a flippin BLOOD BATH.

Still, that doesn't mean we can't have things reasonable now, without having to go to one extreme or the other.

And update the software, please. But don't shut it down. It is a valuable asset to your product, the knowledge and experience here is invaluable, and will be lost if it is forced to scatter across the 3rd party landscape.

Well said, I quite agree. Are you listening Lindens?

Let me preface the following with a note that although I only recently started posting, I had been a very long time lurker previous to my first response or question.

My 2 cents: As for the often snippy, sometimes downright nasty comments here: Can we just be honest please? We all know it happens and it HAS gotten worse lately. However, I have also noticed that overly sensitive, rather thin skinned responses have gotten worse too. I myself have taken a breather from checkin in lately because I've noticed my own comments becoming increasingly bitchy and I don't like that in myself.

Look. It's Human nature to whine, complain, bitch, moan, banter, fuss, disagree, be obnoxious, and get annoyed when someone doesn't understand or agree with your point of view. There are no saints here. There is also no evil-incarnate (well, except maybe Chris :p )

My point is (and I do have one) is if we want to keep this forum in place, we need to - above all else - answer the damn questions that get asked! It doesn't matter if you think the question is not valid or a waste of time. If that's what you think, then feel free to pass on that one. Because no doubt someone else WILL answer it - perhaps with a little jab or joke that will be entertaining and fun for the OP and everyone else.

But, entertaining and fun are the key words here. Not intentionally hurtful and mean. I mean can we just be adults? Maybe us thin skinned folk (yes I am one) need to "man up" a little. And, maybe the more caustic folk need to chill out a little.

Maybe?

Okay.... wasn´t going to touch this one, because of the original post, but since it´s moved on to the purpose of this forum and I´m here anyway....

Here´s my 2c

The problem with this forum being used for general discussion is that it´s explicitely not meant for general discussion. The fact that we seem without moderator doesn´t change that. It just means that threads are started which would have been moved or locked more quickly in the past. It also means threads which have long outlined their usefulness and have moved into private discussion or flamefests remain alive longer than they might have.

Resident Answers is IMHO at risk of becoming a general debating forum. This could not only mean real questions drowing amidst opinions and rants and not receiving their due attention (as an example, I had to dig up an unanswered question from the bottom of page 2 last night).
It could also, and much more worryingly, put new residents off from posting in the first place.

I have in the past certainly enjoyed taking part in derailments of threads into Friday laughs and giggles. But in my experience this was happening only after a legitimate question was answered fully, and it was generally allowed to run its course.
It hasn´t happened much recently.
What has happened a lot more is general discussion and opinion threads being started and living on well past their sell-by-date, sometimes turning outright nasty.

It would be a great shame if Resident Answers failed to serve its real purpose. I´ve learned a lot here and I´ve enjoyed trying to help others.

Just my 2c, IMHO and YMMV of course
And apologies in advance for any typos, grammatical errors or opinions expressed.

QFT. (Quoted For Truth.)

I used to love RA because I could actually feel useful now and then, and help answer questions. The occasional debate can be fun, but when most of the threads are opinions or GD stuff, I find myself scanning the threads and just leaving. I'm sure that makes some of you happy :p but it makes me sort of sad.

actually, i just the other day posted to RA about an animation i was looking for ... and received a number of useful responses. and, a very generous avi wrote and sent me a script that does exactly what i was looking for (thanks again qie).

there were NO snide remarks, etc. not a single one.

i think (rather, i KNOW) that was because the original post was just that ... a resident asking for an answer to a problem ...

... and not a question on why someone does something. or why i hate windlight. or why newbies wear newbie skin. or why goreans hate furries. or why any number of questions that are DESIGNED to rile up other residents and start a flame war.

i still approach RA for wut it was intended, altho i do enjoy the off topic posts after the OP's question has been answered.

i love when new questions arise from the original.

GD is boring unless it's specifically about a topic i am interested in.

oryx ... you're right.

i just saw a thread asking what england will be like in 2012.

who cares? and why does that deserve to be a RA thread?

can't the OP get into sl and play?

QFT.

As long as I've been in the forums, they've extremely fun. The only difference is that a thread was started, we usually made sure the question was answered and then it would fall apart into lots of silliness, arguing, etc until the moderator would come around and lock it.

These days, as you said, are now almost entirely about opinions and general discussion. While both of those were important to me as well, it was never my primary purpose for coming here. When I log in now and look it looks pretty sad to me too.

As some said, it's just change. I usually adapt to change very easily, but this is not one that I think is good for anyone in the long run. We'll see.

I think the only two MUSTS on this forum are make sure a question gets answered and don't belittle someone for asking a legitimate question.

I've never seen a legitimate question not get answered here. And it's been a long time since I've seen someone chide a newbie for asking something. So I think we're doing great.

*bump* :)

The specific subforums illustrate that you're not going to run out of people answering questions if they're only on-topic.

I was actually hoping that Aki would turn out to be stricter than Strife (not that Strife was/is bad, far from), rather than just let things degenerate.

Discussion threads are needed, especially in response to a blog post if only to let people vent or feel that at least other residents listen if LL won't, but not the "what should I have for dinner?" types of threads.

Well I care what it is like in 2012, assuming I am still in it. Didn't open the thread tho ... I look at less and less threads these days.

Of course people from the UK would care, Cherry, but would you really care to discuss that in here??

I think it's much more important to know what it will be like to live in Malta in 2046. That's keeping me up at nights. :)

Wouldn't it be great if the OP had the ability to lock their own thread? Just as we can edit our own posts. If people in any way were offended by the answers coming through, then 'click', locked. It wouldn't solve everything, but since the OP started the thread, seems fitting he should stop it at any time. Also, maybe set a maximum to the pages permitted. 5? Usually, the question's been answered by then, the rest is just a rehashing of the same points. Any other suggestions?

I like your ideas.

You know, I wish we did have this ability..either to lock it, or just remove it....my reasoning...well, I"m sure a lot of you remember my embarssing thread I started, and I sent a PM to strife once he locked it, thanking him for locking it...I was so embarrassed, and I just wanted it all to go away....and disappear. I am sure I"m not the only one who woke up the next morning and said "I posted what?!?"...

Then again, it's the harsh reality of the internet that once you hit send/post/etc it's gone..and you can never call it back....

there's both sides to it, for sure.

Please note I am not trying to be 'snippy' with you, but tell you of online community realities from a voice of experience.

The fact is you either need to grow some thick skin and let certain things rolls off your back, or, simply get out of SL and all other online communities. This happens, and it will NEVER change in for foreseeable future in the online medium.

.

I ask why should it happen? Does the impersonal computer allow us to leave our sensibilties behind? Are we confounded by the sense of infinity that Secondlife evokes in us so that we merely skirt the edges of this place bitching at one another? Why can't something as sublime as a world created by our intellects and our ingenious natures be given more profoundity than simply "here's a slice of pie" or "You get off the thread, you bore me."
I have never been one to shy away from conflict and bullying. I have read ALL of these comments and I think much thought has been spent in answering not my "whining" but in defining our reactions to each other. This is a global program - then for whatever God's sake you believe in, let's sound like we respect each other's opinions even if we don't. Someone is laughing at us in this great "experiment" so, instead, let's give them something to think about in Resident Answers.
I also realize that I will NOT be bullied off R.A. by boors. God knows what got into me to be put off by louts.
