From: Dana Hickman You can tell a lot about a person from their profile, so yeah I do read it if I'm interested in them. I see people saying this but I find it hard to believe. Most profiles are very mis-representative in my experience. Profiles are often: *) Often copied from other people, books, etc. *) Out of date by sometimes years. *) Like a resume, show the best that a person wants to publish about themselves. *) Like a reverse resume, show the worst a person wants to publish about themselves. It seems impossible to gain any true understanding of a person from their profile to me.

From: Gabriele Graves It seems impossible to gain any true understanding of a person from their profile to me. That's why I said: From: Dana Hickman I don't treat someones profile and groups like a tell-all sign of what they're like, that's what actually conversing with them is for... You can't get a true understanding of them from it, but you can learn some things from it. Sometimes you can learn a lot about a person from it, but that all depends on what's written in it, and how perceptive you are when reading it.

OK, I guess the first line of your post had me puzzled as it seems to me to be at odds with what you say further on is all. To me "You can tell a lot about a person" does not mean "glean some interesting bits from them".

From: Jig Chippewa When you read a profile - as I ALWAYS do - does a person's group memberships affect your attitude to them? Like, for example, I am member of several arts groups but also have more carnal needs. Thus, am I an "art-slut" or a slutty artist? Well, you know what I mean ... do groups make you avoid people? If I am seeing a lot of free sex escorts and the like.... I have a clue what they want from SL and its not what I want so... move on. but art slut and slutty artist I would pause on, look up the group see what it is about probably... Its not so much the groups but the group tags anyway..... It gives you an insight into what they want from SL and if you can contribute with your own likes, you might have a common thread... you know. anyway Yes they do.

From: Ayesha Lytton How do you change a group so that members can't hide it? I don't see that option anywhere. Hmm - cannot find it either, but at one point last year, I was in a group and could not select the option to not display it in my profile. Maybe, thankfully, LL changed it so a group cannot restrict that anymore.

I'm an avid profile reader. I'm just naturally curious. I can't recall anytime it has lead me to act differently, even if there are some things on their profile that might raise an eyebrow.
One thing that drives me crazy is when they use picks to write their undying love for someone. I'm a big time romantic but have seen many of those that made me nauseous.

From: Melita Magic Could just mean they're an individualist.
Or that their groups are hidden for various reasons - not necessarily salacious ones. That's no quite what I meant. What I meant is that"No particular group in and of itself would automatically disqualify someone from my perhaps interacting with them". I'm not against keeping groups hidden.

Oh. I misread it to be "no group affiliation would make me run screaming, in and of itself." As in: if they had no groups listed.
Sorry!

From: Gabriele Graves *) Often copied from other people, books, etc. Shows a lack of originality, but a degree of enthusiasm and an inidication of what might impress them. From: Gabriele Graves *) Out of date by sometimes years. Either laziness, the result of a hiatus in sl usage, or a developed introversion. From: Gabriele Graves *) Like a resume, show the best that a person wants to publish about themselves. Demonstrating their perception of what *is* important to them and how they think they live up to their success criteria. From: Gabriele Graves *) Like a reverse resume, show the worst a person wants to publish about themselves. A warning or a challenge; suggests that they don't want their time wasted by trivial attempts at communication, rather than an inferiority complex. From: Gabriele Graves It seems impossible to gain any true understanding of a person from their profile to me. I obviously disagree. Pep (Anything or nothing in the profile is indicative of the avatar's personality - or even more useful, that of the person behind it. )

Pep (Anything or nothing in the profile is indicative of the avatar's personality - or even more useful, that of the person behind it. ) None of those reasons are necessarily the right reason why a person would have put that information into (or omitted from) their profile. Your reasons are just one possible set of reasons. For example, If one person copies the profile of another, you are not going to know they have done that, nor the reason why if they did. It's OK though, many people seem to think they can "read" people this way and you are welcome to your belief.

I really do say much about myself in my profile. I really have the dislikes/hates I list. I am terrified of giant squid. I cant stand Songheim musicals. Men who use ties as belts make me very very sad. Etc, etc. My passions are also listed. I think profiles should be entertaining and complex and really are an exercise in compression and paraphrase. My pics allow for more - mainly about me ofcourse. I did spoil myself rotten but I ended up being absolutely charming and entertaining. It's good to know everyone loves me.

It is so ironic to read someone talk about "originality" and how a lack of it is a negative strike against a person, but yet when you see this foolio in SL he looks as plain, boring, and unoriginal as they come.
Go figure...

Go figure... And you have met me in sl exactly how many times? Pep (Make that none. And you really think that a lack of originality is a positive thing? PMSLMAO! )

From: Pserendipity Daniels I am sure you are content in your delusions, Jig. Pep (Until the bubble bursts, presumably. ) I hope you dont use a tie as a belt. Or shave your head. Or wear socks with sandals. Or use a knotted handkerchief for a sunhat. Or look flush and ruddy after a drink. Please tell me you use cologne. I hope your teeth aren't yellow. I hope you dont smoke. Please dont wax and polish your car on Sundays. Please TRY and listen the the Proms at least once this summer. I hope you grow roses. I hope you enjoy rock gardens and primulas. I really hope you like rock music but seriously doubt it. I know people love me, coz they say so and I am a good person. I do my bit for humanity (unlike misrerable old buggers in Oxbridge) Hey, at least I know an Oxford comma

Pep (Your questions demonstrate your lack of insight about me; I *hate* flowers.) God, you really are a miserable old sod, aren't you? What's wrong with flowers? Honestly, Pep, you really worry me. The fact is that I know I challenge you and cheer you up (coz you admire my rapier-like wit) as a modern day Aphra Behn,

Pep (But you are correct; I *am* a "miserable old sod". ) PS You already know my opinion of chicklit.
