Serendipity means "finding good things by accident" and the silent P stands for "purposefully" so the whole thing is a paradox which sums up sl nicely . . . ;)

The Animaniacs would pronounce the P, making hash of your paradox.

Yes it does affect my attitude towards a person.

And everytime after I've joined some random group I go through the group tags, the notices, and the info and make sure I want to be in their listing...

I don't update my Picks all that often - mostly they served as a shortcut to TPing around when I was getting started. I need to start cleaning them out a little - because I do pay attention to the Picks of others. That said, none of mine are anything I'd be bothered with being associated with.

I am glad I don't know who the Animaniacs are, then.

Pep (Presumably, they would not understand what a paradox was, either.)

Yes it does. If someone only belongs to gambling, freebie, or newbie groups, I assume we won't have much in common. Same if someone only belongs to vanilla groups.

I tend to read random profiles specifically to find more cool and interesting groups and picks / places to go. It's also a great way to find people who are in groups I'm in - to find like-minded souls.

When you read a profile - as I ALWAYS do :) - does a person's group memberships affect your attitude to them?
Well, you know what I mean ... do groups make you avoid people?

I check groups, and picks. And yes, what I find there tells me a lot about the person.

I don't mind, generally, finding a kinky group or two in a profile. (Dolcett would be an exception, though!)

Some of the things that do turn me off to getting to know a person better:

- All groups hidden = Sneaky Person
- All groups are in a single interest area = One Dimensional Person
- All Store groups = Miser, obsessed with prices, discounts, sales
- Lots of camping and Free Lindens groups = Boring and Stupid Person

Not necessarily. Most of my groups are club/staff groups, mostly because I DJ at a lot of different places. I simply don't have room in my group list for shops, roleplay, or fine eating establishments.

If I decide to read a profile, the shown groups do help give me an idea of what a person is interested in. No group affiliation would cause me to run screaming by itself, but they might affect the level of interaction with that person, if any.

Could just mean they're an individualist.

Or that their groups are hidden for various reasons - not necessarily salacious ones.

Hi, seeing this is about groups, can I just sway it for a few posts to a question about them, rather than open a new string.

I have my group for my land and never saw the point in having it open.. but friend said it would help so I did..

I have a rezz time on my land (it's a little sandpit) it seems that people in my group don't get their stuff auto returned now, which is a pain in the **** for me.

Is there some way people can join my group and set home there if they like and still be under the auto return?

Or do I start a new group? Or dump the whole thing as having it open doesn't really do much.

PS, I always read someones profile if I am getting to know them.

Ian - Go to your land tab and set auto return for however long you wish. Set the ability to rez to group members only.

Or is the problem that you don't wish to return your own objects as well, since you are in the group?

If you have objects on the land also and do not want them returned, and your friends are in your group, then either revoke their memberships and set ability to rez to all residents, and set auto return to a low number, or...well that's the only option I can think of, actually.

I am pretty sure that your group set objects will still stay, and anyone else's will be auto returned. That is how I have it, and that's what happens - non group members' objects go byebye in a few. HTH

Thank you, yeh I was worrying it was like this... I had it set up like you when my group was closed... but because it is a sandbox I need to keep the rezz and return open for everyone.

Maybe I could make another group... with group only rezz and set it to a bit longer as an incentive. Or just close it...

Is it possible to let friends set their home there with out a group do you know?

All this said, I can hardly see why as a sandbox, I need a group, lol.

I usually read a profile AFTER I've interacted with someone in a random encounter - and then I read every tab. I don't think kinky groups turn me off, but something like Line-Dancing Cowgirls of SL might, especially if we have no interests in common. It's just a tool to help determine how and how much to communicate with people.

And I'm glad I use profiles. I might not have visited Jig's excellent open gallery otherwise.

How do you change a group so that members can't hide it? I don't see that option anywhere.

People get so hung up about Profiles in my opinion.
The best thing you can hope for with regards to them is an entertaining read.

Agreed on profiles. They're just a tidbit.

Ian - why wouldn't keeping your existing group work, and just change the return length? I'm confused why one group would be preferable over another in the situation.

If it's a sandbox, then you don't have your own objects there, right? So you could set all group objects to return at whatever time limit you chose. And keep the land as is. Unless there's an aspect I'm not seeing.

It's a sandbox that you want your friends to be able to build on for limited lengths of time per session and also set home to, as I understand it so far.

Yes I believe you must be a member of the group that owns the land, to set home there. At least, that's how it was when I did that.

I have heaps of stuff all over it, it's a bush setting for skinny dips & nudie bdsm or just a hang out on the ground and a skybox to work in as the sandpit...

I might just close it, I can't really see why I need people in any group anyway apart from a few friends wanting to set it to home.

If you have things on the land, setting it to another group would not help, because then your own objects would be auto returned as not being in the land's group any more. Even if it's in your avatar name.

Yes, and if I do want to put a note out or give a present to a group, that suscribomatic thing is probably better.

Thanks for your help, eh.

You're welcome.

Sure subscribo would work and a lot of people prefer it now over groups as it doesn't require a group slot. Best luck, whatever you decide to do.

I generally only read a profile after I've talked to or listened to someone for a bit, just as a bit of curiousity... if they're full of adult groups and playing a child av, or vice versa, that often puts me off right away... if they're full of random shops and clubs, it may drop my perception of their class, and if it's dead blank, i have to wonder if they're paranoid or hiding something.

I generally hide the following groups
freinds/family groups (no sense providing people griefing me extra targets)
product groups (sorry, not free advertising)
conflicting interest groups (some of which could freak people out)

groups I show
business groups that I work with (affiliate respect)
general or vague interest (no harm, no foul)
political statement groups (can't make a statment if you never say anything)

You can tell a lot about a person from their profile, so yeah I do read it if I'm interested in them. For me, the groups listed can be a type of early warning flag for certain types of residents I'd rather avoid, or those who are into fetishes I could care less about. I don't treat someones profile and groups like a tell-all sign of what they're like, that's what actually conversing with them is for, but you can glean some interesting bits from them.
