When you read a profile - as I ALWAYS do :) - does a person's group memberships affect your attitude to them?
Like, for example, I am member of several arts groups but also have more carnal needs. Thus, am I an "art-slut" or a slutty artist?
Well, you know what I mean ... do groups make you avoid people?

Well, the first time i ever saw the word "Dolcett" was in SL, and when i googled it, i cried.

So Dolcett & violent groups and scat groups = avoid.

Of course they affect my opinion of them! ;)

If they have outre groups on show either:

a) they don't realise they can hide them

or

b) they don't care who sees them.

In the first case they are not too bright, or too noobish for me to be interested; in the second they are less likely to be sufficiently diplomatic regarding any dealings I might have with them.

Pep (So they are a no-no either way.)

when my alt was less than a month old, I was in a clothing store. a lady came up to me & started to chat. she finally asks 'want to go somewhere special?' the only group showing in her profile was House of Pain. no thanks, not into that.

there are somethings I don't like & some I am very much against, so I tend to stay away from people that have those kinds of things in their profiles.

For purely social reasons, I don't even look at their profile, it's their kink. But, If I'm hit on or interested in someone other than purely social interaction, I do check out their profile. If they are affiliated with BDSM, dom/sub, anything along those lines, I stay away and won't interact. Sorry, but I'm just not interested in that kind of lifestyle

QFT. This.

Since a person can easily hide group memberships, I take the groups shown to be just as much a statement about themselves as any other part of their SL presence: profile, shape, avatar, groups. the whole shebang.

Open up your group list, and "Info" a group. On the first tab, there should be a checkbox labeled something like "Show in Profile", or "Hide in Profile" or something. I don't remember the exact wording.

Sometimes 2 people together belong to a lot of the same groups - a sign they are possibly alts of each other.

Doesn't make me avoid them necessarily, but it does give me a clue as to what to expect from them.

Not withstanding that some people have group memberships merely to be able to rez items for their shop spaces.

Should they have to hide where they have shops?

Get over it.

Presumably only if they have embarrassing names. ;)

I check groups, and picks. And yes, what I find there tells me a lot about the person.

I don't mind, generally, finding a kinky group or two in a profile. (Dolcett would be an exception, though!)

Some of the things that do turn me off to getting to know a person better:

- All groups hidden = Sneaky Person
- All groups are in a single interest area = One Dimensional Person
- All Store groups = Miser, obsessed with prices, discounts, sales
- Lots of camping and Free Lindens groups = Boring and Stupid Person

I don't read profiles at all unless the person strikes me as odd or makes me uncomfortable. I usually start talking to people first. It doesn't occur to me to read first.

I'm fairly negligent about my own profile, groups, and picks, so when people refer to them I'm often surprised.

Actually, Rio does the glares, and Lil helps out when it becomes too onerous for just one person. :p

Keeping your groups displayed is a nice way to filter out people you don't want to interact with. The one's that get scared off generally won't be as much fun for me to talk to.

Depends on what I am interacting with them for, and what I see. And I don't usually dive right into their profile.

Generally, I don't care what someone else's kinks are. (Well, I do find Dolcett disturbing in the extreme, but...)

If I see that they are a member of several groups with interests similar to mine, that makes a positive impression. If they are in certain groups it means that some topics I wouldn't mention in casual conversation are likely to be acceptable.

If they are a member of groups I wouldn't want to acssociate with, such as griefer or hate groups, or nothing but vampire or combat groups, they I probably would not choose to socilaize with them.
