From: Scylla Rhiadra I concur absolutely.
And more to the point (so far as I am concerned), uni teaches you nothing about being a good person. I'll take a gentle uneducated soul over a well-educated asshole any day. Phew! Pep (Another one he doesn't have to run away from.)

From: Desmond Shang College is a bit over~rated... oh, it's good and all, and generally just having the bit of paper means people will get paid a bit more in a job... but depending on the degree one might as well just put their kid on a cruise ship for four years instead. The bit of paper documents that you can stick to it and produce results, regardless of how crazy the demands are. Nothing to sneer at. It also shows that (unless it was a complete party school) you've done a bit of intellectual calesthenics without hurting yourself too badly. But, after your first relevant job or two, the importance of a diploma or where you got it diminishes dramatically. I confess I have a bit of degree envy, nonetheless. Despite being academically oriented, I was a terrible student: too many distractions (yeah, it was crazy fun). And in school, if you don't do your shit, the result is bad grades. In life, if you don't do your shit, someone gets seriously let down. That made all the difference to me. Still, I wish I'd stuck it out, especially whenever I want to use some differential equations. (How I got a C in that class still mystifies me, but if I'd continued I'd have had to actually use the stuff.) Despite decades of autodidacity, I can't manange to teach myself on this subject. I keep falling asleep over the textbook, "Differential Equations for Dummies". Fortunately, the need only arises for my hobbies, and I can usually find a way to fake or finesse it. I'd rather read an anthropology textbook, anyway.

From: Desmond Shang One thing about college though... it was *glorious* fun. You feel smart and chase all sorts of intellectual topics by day, while chasing co~eds by night... a good time had by all. Then eventually you marry and suddenly find you've turned into your parents. until the divorce. then, rinse & repeat.

It sort of depends what you do. I've got a degree, but not once in 20+ years after getting it did I properly use it, other than "yes I've got a degree, you can hire me." The people who get ahead and stay ahead are the ones that ultimately don't work for anyone else, by having a business great or small, and quietly minding it. Look who actually can afford to pay their own way after retirement ~ something like over 90% of people in the United States can't do that for more than a few years, and the ones that can generally have a business. One thing about college though... it was *glorious* fun. You feel smart and chase all sorts of intellectual topics by day, while chasing co~eds by night... a good time had by all. Then eventually you marry and suddenly find you've turned into your parents. Unfortunately, there are fields out there such as the one I'm trying to get into, that are so competitive that one needs that piece of paper just to get one's foot in the door as a go-fer. Even the US Navy is starting to require college education, attaching promotions to degrees. Officers already had to have degrees; but now even mid-level enlisted people are starting to need to have degrees to be considered for advancement. And on that note... Damn, I need to get to class! *opens a tab in Firefox...*

From: Jig Chippewa It's true. I just wrote above that I made one teacher so sad she almost left teaching forever. And taht was in Art class!!!! My fav. subj. I didnt have a clue how to behave. Or rather, I did - I just didnt want to. Truly if Scylla is at a uni. well, good on her! I'm just a little envious in a confessional kinda way. Really. I am.
I remember her dragging me out into the hall (serously posh school) and really tearing up and asking why I was so stubborn and angry and all combative. And I just stood there like the perrenial bitch and stared her down and looked away. My heart was breaking inside but I couldnt tell her. I was that sorry. In high school, my daughter decided to drop a class. Her father decided she would not drop it. He went to the school and spoke with the teacher along with the principal. He informed them his daughter will NOT drop out of that class, she will see it through. The teacher burst into tears, and said PLEASE......PLEASE.......LET HER DROP THE CLASS......taken aback, my husband said well NO, she is not going to drop it, but if she gives you one problem, she is not going on the senior trip to Washington D.C. All you have to do is call me and tell me. My daughter really wanted to go on that trip. She made it through the rest of the year without upsetting that poor teacher but only with that threat hanging over her head. To this day, I feel sorry for that poor teacher, crying at the thought of continuing to have to teach her.

But I was just bad. Now I regret it, of course.
