I'm prolly ignored by half the population but what does it mean to the person who is being ignored if they dont know it? I mean all they think is that people are too lazy to reply to their post or are so overwhelmed by the sheer brilliance of the post as to be unable to reply. Do you get a little note that says "Jig Chippewa, you bitch, you are being ignored by Babylon de Kooning forever" ? (I made up the name Babylon de Kooning)
And can you ignore back? And say "Right Babylon, you cow, here's a ignore for you too!" I have never ignored anyone coz I am too nosy to miss anything. So does being ignored really make a difference?

Well, I have found it necessary to ignore some people in a big way on occasion, by muting them. I'm pretty sure that they will know they have been muted if they try interacting with me in any way.

Huh? What? As far as I know, you don't get any indication whatsoever when you've been put on ignore - unless the person doing it wants to be a drama queen and announce it for all and sundry to see. However, I think you might get some indication if you try to PM the individual.

I presume you mean in the forums. I don't think you can tell.
For those unable to control their responses I suppose the ignore function is like a sedative, enabling them to better control themselves when they otherwise cannot... me, I don't need the technical crutch.
For me it's more about topics, than people though. I quit reading the vaccination thread when it got really long and drama~y, for instance.

What Desmond said The Ignore/Mute features are for those who find themselves unable to ignore certain things. Someone who puts you on Ignore is making a gift to you. You won't be bothered by any rabid responses from such a person.

I haven't replied to most of the current threads on Residents Answers. Does that mean I've ignored all the people who've posted on them???

You crack me up I don't do the ignore thing, but I am a great one for skimming, and when things begin to loop (I usually get a kick out of fruit loop) I usually loose interest. I don't know if people don't read threads, or have loads of people on ignore, but when it gets wind-baggy and repetitive I drift off a bit. You know you can set up Emerald to tell anyone you have muted anything you like? It could be cathartic if you were inclined.

Oh that was worth a skim. You missed some glib little gems in that one

If you're ignoring me, can you let me know in this thread so I can scratch you off my Christmas card list?
Seriously, I wanna know. Just say, "Me, you self-inverted slut" okay? Or something equally equine.
So if you aren't told you're being ignored or muted then its a pointless exercise, right? You just become a prophet whinging in teh wilderness.

Quoted by me because Jig doesn't seem to realise that if she is on ignore with someone they won't see her request to be told she is on ignore. Pep (Someone else had better do it as well, since I may be on ignore with some of the same people. )

From: Jig Chippewa So if you aren't told you're being ignored or muted then its a pointless exercise, right? You just become a prophet whinging in teh wilderness. Ignoring isn't always a snub. On another forum there is a poster who is very antagonistic, and although he is at times interesting, he is usually just tiresome. So I avoid the threads he starts. I don't open them unless I'm feeling up to it (but I usually don't). He has no idea that I do this. If he *did* know, if were dumb enough to tell him, "I'm ignoring you", then I'm sure he would only laugh and tell me that my brain couldn't handle the truth. So... the pointless thing to do would be to TELL him I'm ignoring him.

Being on someone's ignore list means that you can say what you want about the person, and they won't defend themselves There are times when adding someone to the ignore list is very good because it cuts out all the confrontation. I did it once with a person who seemed to have a mission of being confrontational with me, and the forum quietened down after that. On the other hand, adding someone to the ignore list is used by some people as a sort of punishment. They wrongly imagine that the other person actually cares, and they post to let the person know - stuff like, "Welcome to my ignore list". There's a current, exaggerated example of that, where one person here starts threads, and includes in the first post a copied/pasted list of people who she won't respond to because they are on her ignore list. That person deludes herself into believing that the people on her list actually care that they are on it and won't receive replies from her

Hmmmm. Putting people on "ignore" always seemed disrespectful to me. And a little childish, maybe, like putting your fingers in your ears and humming loudly "I can't HEEEEEEAAR you!" . . . I've never used ignore, or mute in-world for that matter, but I can imagine occasions, such as harassment, when I might want to. I have no idea if I've ever been put on ignore . . . /me shrugs. Their loss.

I never could see the point of 'Ignore'. I've been extremely annoyed by other posters in the past but then again I don't doubt I've rubbed quite a few the wrong way myself. C'est la vie.
Otherwise it's quite usual, I think, to get the impression that you are being ignored because the plain fact is that nobody is capable of answering everyone else all the time and sometimes it just works out that your posts get overlooked in the melée.
Ignorant bastards.
That said, I find the in-world corollary of 'Mute' is very handy for cleaning spamtards out of chat and blocking whispers from dopey objects but I usually clear the list before I log off.

The people I have on ignore I just want nothing to do with. I do not care if they know they are on ignore or not. I do not care what they think. If I cared, they would not be on ignore.

Ignore here is rather pointless. It's worse than doing an ostrich, because you can see when a person you are ignoring has posted, but not what they have posted - and there is a little button available which allows you to override your ignore . . . and it must be so, so tempting to click it and find out . . . dammit! Pep (At least, that is what Lindal tells me.) PS The underlying problem with "ignore" is that, while you really want that person to go away, the only person you are fooling is yourself, because they don't - and of course it is nullified by others quoting that person.

There used to be a consultant in an office where I worked who talked everyone's head off. He would never end a conversation himself; you had to walk away. I tried every conversation-ending gambit and signal I know of, but he ignored them all. We all did.
Unless you physically walked away, he would not stop talking.
In the end, I used to dash by his office before he could register it was me and call out some question or hook me somehow.
This to me is a physical analog to "ignore" in the forums.
