From: Cocoanut Koala Actually, LL has gone in and required some landowners to remove, or lower the number of their camping chairs.
So it does help to AR these places, though I don't know how often they will do that.
Again, NOT that I have anything against camping.
I do have something against putting in so many chairs no one else can use the sim, and I especially have something against putting in a bunch of your own zombie bots just to move up the search.
coco I thought their used to be an alt limit, I remember people complaining they were adversely affected by it because there were two or more people who lived in their house. I guess this must have been unenforceable after open registration.

From: Brenda Connolly I love their Movies. Especially "A Night in Vladivostok" and " A Day on the Bread Line".
I like Lenin too, but Georgi was my favorite Beatle. I quite liked Duck Borscht From: Graphicguru Gustav WOW!!! I think that in spite of my better judgement I will have to re-visit the camping thingie for a bit (borring as it is) I will look for a spot that is surrounded by communists, capitalists, nazis, budists, gays, goths, libertarians, green group, satanists...you name it. Just to see what all the hulabaloo is about... WTF!!! this thread is getting boged down with mud slinging...where is Strife when you need him/her? Phew! you left out trolls .... oops!

From: Phil Deakins Some people want it to be a super clean place where normal business competition practises don't exist. Those people are dreaming. Some people want it so that all businesses are just hobbies and don't really need to make any money, except maybe tier. Those people are dreaming too. Some want it so that nobody does anything to change their search rankings - all dreamers. This thread is full of such dreamers. I think you are missing the point. It is not just about morality, and it certainly isn't about just "dreaming" about some sort of Utopia. It's actually very practical. What you are doing is essentially polluting the environment. The way you know that is to think what would happen if everybody did what you are doing. Some business owners refuse to do that. All you are doing is taking advantage of any lull between where they refuse to do that and if and when they decided to go ahead and do it, since people like you are doing it, and are gaining a financial advantage from it. But when that happens, it will not work for anyone. Plus the environment would be completely ruined; the grid absolutely choked. You are willing to do this, because everyone else isn't. You figure your little bit of doing it can't really hurt the grid that much. Others take a longer view. It is not accurate to take that longer view and call it "false morals." False morals would be where someone adhered to a standard that had no practical implications behind it whatever. If they refused to use a tactic just because they THOUGHT it was bad. This tactic actually IS bad, in terms of the overall SL environment. Not to mention, once everyone does it, it won't work for you anymore anyway. Anything that hurts the grid hurts ALL of us business owners. coco

As for locking this thread
01-03-2008 10:58
As for locking this tread: When someone says he does not give a sh** about anybody else, we have a right to react to that.
I have never even posted before this--and I have been here for a year, but the attitude of "take anything you can------from anybody you can------No matter what it takes", Made me plenty angry. I am not alone in that either.
Just because there are parisites in RL does not mean we need to tolerate that here. And all I am doing is mentioning the same thing that was quoted: SL is what we make it.
Some of us want SL different than a place to take advantage of everybody else simply of rules that were terribly thought out----------if they were thought out at all.
Sorry.

From: Artiar McMahon Anytime the customers catch on to what you are doing to them, the customers will find another store. And that is what is going to happen here. Maybe it's time to dust off my creative skills and open up a low prim furniture shop. Without campers or bots or fake traffic figures.

From: Nimue Jewell I think hidden campers like this are often just multiple alts so the land owners don't even have to pay campers. They can park their free alts in a cube in a sky and watch their traffic numbers soar. *nods* I have a workshop on the edge of a sim, and on the next sim, bordering my workshop, is a shop that sells well... stuff I don't hold in high regard. Suddenly, the map was dotted with green and I though something nice was happening. But soon I discovered a pattern and went over to check. What I found were nude, naked girls, all with the same last name and first names mostly the same, just one letter different each time. Now they are gone, but the money chairs are still there... 1L / hour...

From: Artiar McMahon Just because there are parisites in RL does not mean we need to tolerate that here. when we're all dead and gone, the cockroaches will still be around, ruling the lands. parasites are immune to your pleas, and you can't control them just because you turn the lights on... you just force them to be more clever, thus eventually giving them the determination to persist until they eventually out-mind you. survival is a powerful motivator. in other words: get over it.

Hello All, I think this will be my last post on this thread because as people have said, I think it's lost direction and focus. It's been entertaining and interesting to hear people's views and it has given me some food for thought. This sort of debate is what SL is all about, it is a very good environment for designing, implementing and analysing new social, economic and commercial models. Funnily enough I do own a small company in RL, and am often confronted with many of the same issues we've discussed here, so can actually vouch for it's potential value in this regard. The only caveat I'd place on all of this is that I think we do have to make a distinction between those who come to SL for fun and recreation (myself being one), and those that come in order to make a RL financial investment in the hope of making an RL financial gain. I know that many people in SL have little or no commercial experience of owning or running a business and understandably get a bit ticked off when the filthy money men turn up with their dubious ethics and ruin our fun.. I also understand that SL has been marketed by LL as a real business environment where real dollars can be made. For those that come and invest financially and personally as a result, finding themselves targets of abuse for what are really perfectly viable business practices can also be frustrating. Obviously the two perspectives will clash, and I guess we will have to find a way to accommodate both if SL is to develop in the way we all hope. What we must do as recreational users of SL is make sure that we don't place so many prescriptive hinderances on the commercial users that they find it impossible to make a profit. I think we all lose out if this ever happens and they leave. That's it, I'm sure I'll bump into you all again on other threads - or you never know, even in world..

Not only in this thread, but LL as well: "It's our mission to connect us all to an online world that advances the human condition." SL attracts dreamers, in fact I personally think that a lot of residents stay in SL solely because of its effectiveness as a wish-fulfillment environment. LL clearly intends for SL to be a viable platform for small businesses, which fits in with their mission quite well. It would probably serve that purpose better if search were not so easily gamed ... but with 30-40 developers total, that has to not be the highest priority. Even so, the new search may be a step toward opening up their databases so that specialists in searching can address the problem for them. Given that traffic still contributes to search position, I can't see why individual business owners should be castigated for using the tools they're given. If LL wants search to be ungamable, it is their responsibility to make it so. I can't see getting judgemental about campers using camping chairs, and I can't see berating Phil for boosting his traffic numbers. I also think that having scorn toward the idealism of SL residents who want it to be a better world than RL is not good business -- that is why most retail customers are in SL, because it seems better than RL. Those SL retailers who create shopping experiences that make residents FEEL GOOD about buying their stuff are the ones who are most in tune with SL.

Goes back to what I said, get rid of the Traffic metric. But .. You can definitely blame Phil *LINDEN* for gaming the traffic system, whether or not you agree with Phil D ..

One thing this thread has shown is the practices and principles if one business owner , who at least has stated them upfront and without reservation. Now each of us , as a potential customer of his ,can decide if we want to give him our business.

I think we all lose out if this ever happens and they leave. That's it, I'm sure I'll bump into you all again on other threads - or you never know, even in world.. I think this is unfair. You have decided that those who won't stoop to low tactics are by definition hobbiests, who run their businesses simply as recreation. This is simply not true. You can find a number of people in business in SL who make a very good income from their work here; who even work here only, with no other day job; who would not dream of using traffic bots and in fact take a strong stance against it. This has nothing to do with "commercial" users and "recreational" users. None. Nor is it realistic to think that anyone against the use of traffic bots has no business sense or ability. Sometimes I think people who talk like this just really don't know the more financially successful people in SL. coco P.S. I have to add - according to the logic of your post, the person with the low-prim furniture who uses traffic bots is somehow the legit, "commercial," businessperson, whereas all the others I could name - the REALLY successful, and ethical businesspeople on the grid - are merely doing it for recreation. Now that is laughable.

Of course the Traffic system is so screwed up and horribly gamed, I might disagree with camping/traffic alting - But still not hold a grudge when it comes to buying products. I never care what the traffic number is anywhere as long as its LESS than 30,000. I hate walking in lag soup.

What would Brian Boitano do?
Who is John Galt?
Why does Phil Linden wear a sequined codpiece, and are trafficbots morally acceptable?
All pressing issues of our times.
