I have to respond to the it's my land I can do what I want crowd....

If each individual lived in a bubble I'd agree, but we don't, but what you do with your land affects me. At the very least what you do with you land affects the pleasure I receive on mine. That's a tough one cause we're talking taste there. Far worse, however, what you do affects my property value. That's where we need to talk and that's where something needs to be done. I don't know what the answers are. I'm not saying an across the board ban should occur. But the current system just is not working.

A reminder to everyone. RFL will be making an announcement soon regarding the issue of this thread. Unfortunately the person making the announcement isn't feeling well, but the issue has been resolved.

Partner is Partner for a reason.

If your partner is doing something wrong, or unethical, and you stick by them, be prepared to take the tar and feathers with them.

See sig
~Jessy

I'm not saying it's not despicable, or that human nature should change, but I can see them as separate entities and the actions of one should not necessarily be attributed to the other. I don't know what the nature is of their relationship, and don't care - I want them all gone, as they do nothing for the landscape and don't even make any sense in a point to point tp world. I can see that technology being better used for legitimate inworld advertising and other applications.

Networked Advertising Round II, was the second incarnation by Rathe Underthorn, called MetaAdverse - which was around from 2004-2005. Extremely successful, it was a networked ad system that linked advertisers with those who wanted to host advertisements.

Actually, it was very similar to what Raudf explains in her quote below:

Whatever happened to that? Is anyone doing that now?

I wondered that too... and what better application for it than a network of in-world philanthropies?

That doesn't mean that they cannot have separate properties or ventures.

They can have separate properties or ventures, but one of the basic elements of a partnership is that each partner is responsible for all of the activities of the partnership. That means that if your partner does something stupid, illegal, unethical, etc., then you are personally responsible for it. If they do something with rgards to a different venture or on their own behalf, then you may not be responsible for it, but you need to pay close attention to whom you've decided to tie your name and reputation

My grandfather used to say, "Fly with the crows, get shot with the crows." I can't fathom why he was shooting at crows, but I think I understand the sentiment behind the statement.

A friend of mine just sent me photos of what Mr. Shriner replaced the RFL ads with - rather ugly Nazi-like photos sponsored by the "Association of Land Fascists". And this guy thinks he's a serious businessman who's smarter than anyone else? This is something the media should give him attention for - retaliation tactics using non-politically correct graphics. He even misuses "too" - what professionalism!

You better not go look - you'll count for "impression minutes!"

Hmm, where can I post these photos where people can see them?

Ah, Photobucket - hope this link works:

Oh I didn't even notice the first time around that not only did he misuse too/to, he also misspelled "fascist" as "facist". No worries, I know what he means. Now I'll go about tagging my images so they'll come up whenever he gets Googled. :D

Official ACS / RFL of SL Response
01-29-2008 15:00
Hello,
I’m the Event Chair for the Relay For Life of Second Life ’08. After talking with RC Mars (an American Society’s Representative) , David Jacobs (RFL of SL ’08 co-chair), and Synergy Devonshire (RFL of SL Public Relations and Marketing chair) we wish to release this official response from the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life of Second Life '08.

Ancient,
We want to thank you for your donation of advertising space. Your donation is very kind and generous; we appreciate your support. As Second Life continues to grow, we are experimenting with different ways of advertising. We do not think that the kinds of ad space you are donating is going to fit into our marketing mix. Again, your donation is appreciated and we hope to maintain your support through the 2008 Relay season and beyond.

Thank you,
Fayandria Foley, David Jacobs, RC Mars, and Synergy Devonshire

Thank you all for letting us know the outcome.

It is too bad that what may have been a generous impulse on Ancient's part has surfaced so many strong negative feelings about his practices, but these feelings are of long standing, and I am very sure that he was well aware of the probable outcome of this adventure.

I am at least glad to see that RFL is removing itself from the battlefield.

Fayandria Foley, David Jacobs, RC Mars, and Synergy Devonshire:

Thank you for listening to the concerns of residents and discontinuing the advertising campaign through AdSoft Networks. I am pleased that you decided that having your organization displayed on a cube next to pornographic images, among other things, was not appropriate. I think you will find that you gain more support from longtime residents by advertising through more reputable venues, and I look forward to supporting your organization.

A Big Thank you to Fayandria Foley, David Jacobs, RC Mars, and Synergy Devonshire.

You have all been nothing but gracious and professional in these forums and my personal chats with you over these past couple of days. I highly anticipate the RFL campaign this year. Being a new business owner it will be exciting to have my first RFL vendor at my store.

I think Desmond has a point and it's one that he made much better than I did. It's a slippery slope when we ask LL to ban something. LL has been pretty much hands off when it comes to banning things. Age-play, gambling and banking all had real world legal implications for LL so they took the action they needed to protect the company. Ad-farms do not have any real world legal implications, so they should not start banning them. People should be allowed to do as they please on their land.

Look at the ad farmers/extortionists scream like stuck pigs in here, though. I don't see many people demanding a ban. What I see is people boycotting ads. That's no LL taking action, it's a perfectly legal grass roots attack on a despicable, if legal, activity. Boycott adfarms, demand that LL give us the land tools to stop the adfarms from rendering on our land, put up screens so guests and visitors can't see the ads, surround them, screen them, then let them choke on tier. Put up signs on your land asking people to stop the blight and extortion and spread the word about not supporting them at all. Contact the people using adfarmers and tell them you won't be buying their product because they use adfarmers. Just be polite with them and explain about the extortion, bullying, and gutter tactics these people use.

oh, and sixteen. Stop being a douche and start acting like you care about other people. You're acting like your name and age are the same. Try compassion and consideration. It will make you feel better about yourself. You're selling your conscience and integrity for a few lindens. It's not worth it.

QFT.

Except for the paragraph addressing "Sweet" Sixteen. That falls in the category of falling on deaf ears. Or maybe pearls before swine.

Just an appreciation of ACS / RFL's considered and professional response to a delicate situation. I'm sure as a result many folks will redouble their support for this worthy cause.

There are plenty of things you're not allowed to do in SL, that are legal in the real world. SL is a business, and a community. Ad farmers, who are shitting all over both, should not feel surprised if LL is forced to quash their liberties. I generally don't like to see any liberties taken away, but I won't shed a tear if that one goes.

It is true that a few of my terminals have been totally blocked over with trees or other such TOS violations

Sorry to dredge up something from very early in the thread, and a tangent at that, but I am confused on this point. Is it a TOS violation to put up walls so that you don't see your neighbor?

Simple walls blocking, no.

What he refers to is when people place trees and blocks on their parcels, but where they overlap (encroach) onto his parcel, covering his stuff, and he has no direct power to return those objects.

Actually, reading back, he seemed to be addressing the fact that the "impressions" count needed to be manually adjusted for when ads were obstructed by "blocking." I'm guessing the "violation" refers to an informal policy from back before point-to-point TPs, requiring that at least one side of a parcel offer access. (It was kinda silly back then, too, because it didn't guarantee an actual path to the parcel, nor was there a way to determine which owner among multiple abutting parcels had to surrender their ability to build what they wanted.)

What Brad said!

I'm very glad these people took the time to reply and clarify their position in this thread.

I was involved in a few events last year and can now look forward to getting actively involved again!
