The RESTRICTED word doesn't mean that new logins are restricted to people who have paid money. None of us can get in when it's restricted.

My two cents
02-11-2009 21:10
I haven't read every single post on this thread, but my two cents to Jack is this. I was a prem account holder for a year the first year, but after 6 months I stop playing and didn't come back to SL for about 2 1/2 years until april 2008. I am not a prem account now. No need too since I have a met a great friend that rents out land. Anyways, my point is that. I have put in WAY more money into lindens then you would every pay for in your premium account, and even more then you will ever put into buying your own lindens. Just b/c you have a prem account doesn't mean you get to have a "first in line" service either, even if login disable was based on anything but the fact that something IS wrong with the grid. Thoses noobs who are able to log on may not be important to you if you don't have a business but to me, that is fine. I have been around long enough to see alot of SL, and not to be bothered by the fact that "OMG, I can't log in" in four hours.

Read a book, clean out that shed, ride a bike. SL shouldn't take place of RL. And if it does, then I don't know what to tell you.

Of all the threads available to necro-posting, why this one?

WOW....so much anger towards noobs because a premium member couldnt get on sl during downtime!! I am not a premium member and never plan to be. I am happy renting with my partner and I spend at least $50 US dollars a month......soooooo should i be allowed to log in or do you want me banned too during downtime, maybe it should go by how much you spend and not if your premium or not? Ridiculous!

Geeze, it's only a month old. It's not a necropost, it's only resting.

From the camping newbie to the charter member content baron, Second Life is a complex and interconnected economy.

Now while I do not fully agree with the guy (the issue is not newbies per se, but non-paying 'customers' having the same priority as paying customers), you're hardly neutral on the issue...no noobs, no NCI. Personally, at a minimum I believe sim owners SHOULD get priority (I am premium, but I rent, not own)...why should a free account get priority over a major paying member?

I've taken random samplings of sales, checked for payment info on file/used....those are 98% and 97% respectively. Not all those would be premiums, granted, but most free accounts are No Payment. So from my point of view, newbies are NOT inteconnected to me...I see more impact on sales when LL pisses off sim owners than from ANY influx of non-paying members (each influx, I usually get beggars wanting free stuff, so the 'they use the lindex' arguement seems rather bogus). Again, the problem is not newbies, its non-paying members (including bots) being allowed to connect / remain connected in high load situations.

I'd like to see them start disconnecting nonpaying users when load gets high to reduce load. It'd whack a few of my friends that pretty much LIVE on SL but pay nothing to LL towards bandwidth and server loading, granted, but eh.

I did not claim neutrality on this issue. Clearly I'm going to be an advocate for new residents in most situations. I don't feel any need to post any disclaimer as I think it is obvious people from the context of my posts.

However "no noobs, no NCI" is a bit too narrow. It would be more accurate to say "no noobs, no Second Life". Second Life, like any activity/world/platform/game/whatever constanly loses members through normal attrition. If SL stops attracting new residents, then ultimately it is doomed. At the very best it will become another There or Active Worlds--a declining niche platform. More likely, it would become the Gopher of the 3D Internet.

Just as importantly, new residents provide new voices, new talents, and new energy that constantly helps to reinvent and reinvigorate the culture and economy of Second Life. They also buy L$, buy and rent Land, buy clothes, skins, hair, etc.

Is it possible that your experience is atypical because of the type of business you own and where it is located? Caledon has historically attracted an older group of residents, both as shoppers and land owners.

That's not far from my point. If LL just would disconnect the bots during peak load times, there would be no need to restrict anyone else's logins.

LOGIN FAILED.
Due to higher-than-usual load, logins to Second Life have been temporarily disabled. We anticipate logins will be disabled for a short time.
ONLINE 78,329

Well ain't that bloody marvelous ... Premium Member with high Land Tier denied access to SL, whilst a ferkin noob sat on a camp chair or picking a dollar bill can stay online and logged-in.
Well noob, please enjoy your FREE LUNCH that I am paying for !

Jack, from my perspective, you are a noob, so I could say..."get the f*** out of my SL".... But that would be rude so I won't. Actually, I welcome all noobs to SL, including you Jack. Noobs who are excited enough with SL to put down roots and stay, are the fuel that the SL economy runs on. Their energy often leads to amazing advancements. I welcome all noobs.

But I feel your pain Jack. What I do not welcome are bots, they add nothing to the economy or energy in SL. If you want to blame someone for your LOGIN FAILED, blame the bots, damn them all and damn the Lindens for tolerating them.
