[...] I do not own land nor do i think i would want to. I am glad to give my hard earned money to someone who has the ability who can afford to own a sim. Any new players thinking of coming to SL, please ignore this thread. Not everyone in SL feels this way. Actually, most don't... just a few people out there like this. The good news is that the only people who see the official Forums have already become residents in order to login. The point still stands, though, for those new residents who stumble upon this thread: most older residents try hard to welcome new folks to the grid. There are exceptions; they suck. A completely off-topic ramble, about owning land or renting from somebody who does: This is not gonna win me any points with my fellow virtual "landlords", but I'm gradually coming to the view that we all have an unhealthy addiction to virtual land and the prims it supports. The thing is, it's the same addiction, whether the land is owned or rented, and by renting out some of mine, I'm acting as kind of a "pusher" for LL's drug (hallucinogen? opiate?). It's not that I wish bad things for LL, but really, every RL dollar spent on Linden land fees is about L$260 not spent on resident content. And a very large share of the L$s spent on rent goes to covering the landlord's fees to LL, so ultimately it's very close to the same thing. Not that folks shouldn't own virtual land or anything, but... I just wonder what drives us to always want so much *more* of it, and whether many of us may have grown beyond the point of diminishing returns. |

Good post. Just a couple observations: The good news is that the only people who see the official Forums have already become residents in order to login. The point still stands, though, for those new residents who stumble upon this thread: most older residents try hard to welcome new folks to the grid. There are exceptions; they suck. I just wonder what drives us to always want so much *more* of it, and whether many of us may have grown beyond the point of diminishing returns. Very good post!! Its often hard to explain that addiction but it is real. I used to have it and not sure why I wanted to throw money to LL for a unstable platform and for something that isnt real except in SL. Ego perhaps? I dont really know but I am very glad I was able to break that addiction ![]() _____________________

From Mr. Jack "feeling so much better as the rest" his profile:
"Huge once in a lifetime Inventory Clearout, all original items since 2006. Everything must go, leaving SL on Thursday 22 Jan 2009. Roadside land will be sold immediately after." Ha... no wonder he dares to be so big mouthed. Anyway, I know one place where I won't buy a thing ![]() Mor |

Maybe I've missed it along the way here, but I think that any such discussion about "noobs" should at least define what a "noob" is. I would suggest; "Anyone joining SL in March 2008 or later." ![]() Just so no one misunderstood, I have nothing against noobs, with the possible exception of those with an attitude like the OP. Heck, I was a noob once, some of my best friends are noobs, etc., etc. Of course, when I say I, I mean I and not you, if I meant you................... Damn, now the big eared fella has got me doing it. ![]() _____________________

Since Hanja is the first newbie landingzone, it get's quite crowded in there as well. If you like, feel free to send them over the border into Hamnida. NCI has a campus there (NCI South) along the west border of the Hanja Welcome Area. _____________________

Good post. Just a couple observations: ... Not that folks shouldn't own virtual land or anything, but... I just wonder what drives us to always want so much *more* of it, and whether many of us may have grown beyond the point of diminishing returns. Well, for some of us that don't have the time and/or talent to create, land is a place to create with what others have done. More organizer than creator, but it reflects a bit of our own vision. That said, not only are rez dates a bad way to determine whether a person (vs. avatar) is a newb, but SL reflects real life enough that nOOb begins with the person at the keyboard and as my son hit 30, you'd be surprised what I include in the nOOb world out there. A mature person of any age that hits SL for the first time yesterday is less of a nOOb in my opinion than some that have stood around in SL for years, growing older, not growing up. Newbies are fine, nOObies are OK while learning, but perennial nOObs like the OP just make me bone f..ing tired. |

Somebody earlier in this thread mentioned it'd be good to define what a noob/n00b is.
Well, that's a good point. I thought a n00b was not somebody who's new, but rather, somebody who is perpetually clueless, and can't and won't be taught. Vs. a newb, somebody who is new. So, is that accurate? If so, I'm very much against the noobs. Get rid of them. You newbs however, welcome to Second Life. Happy to see you're here. |

I'd rather just call them "a little slow" or something that more descriptive. _____________________

I've also heard 'noob' described this way but have never agreed with it. I'd rather just call them "a little slow" or something that more descriptive. newb A newb, not to be confused with "Noob" or N00b", this word only means that this person who plays a game of any sort isn't that good at the game, but would like to become better at this game, not act childish and call everyone else "Noobs". Someone who could be ranked as a novice in a game such as Halo or Halo 2, would like to become a better player and get a rank of apprentice, or Distinguished, surpassing the rank of a newb. n00b The term "n00b" is commonly confused with the term "newb". A newb is short for a newbie, someone who is new to something. A n00b is someone who, regardless of experience, is utterly crap at a game and will not take the advice of others. These are generally big mouthed people who suffer from Delusions of Grandeur. sorry but i love the site i get these from ![]() _____________________

I somehow completely missed that, what happened there? here is this link http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/contingency-measures-to-ensure-service-as-second-life-grows/ is when they talked about it. I cant find the reuters link anymore but here is what winter said Short version.. they tried it. Reuters called them. LL said it was an experiment, that no longer served the function for which it was intended... and wouldn't be happening again. _____________________

here is this link http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/contingency-measures-to-ensure-service-as-second-life-grows/ is when they talked about it. I cant find the reuters link anymore but here is what winter said Check it out; When you open your log-in screen and see in the upper right hand corner Grid Status: Restricted, you’ll know that only those Second Life Residents who have transacted with Linden Lab either by being a premium account holder, owning land, or purchasing currency on the LindeX, will be able to log-in. Residents who are in Second Life when this occurs will only be affected if they log-out and want to return before the grid returns to normal status. So they restricted access to those who never ever bought anything in currency, or any other product from LL. So anyone who bought as much as 1000 L$ got the same right as one who pays his ass off every damn day. No wonder they quit this dumb ass idea. They restricted access for really new people only. Which are at crucial times, not really a lot, and doesn't help them into staying in the game. Access for all!!!!! _____________________

They restricted access for new people and bots.
Wanna bet the botfarmers shouted loud enough to force them to change? _____________________
