Still use the default walk/waddle...

Me too. got a real nice victorian gentleman AO...that 9 out of 10 I forget to either equip or turn on. Personally, I hate AO's, since they conflict with so many other animations, you're constantly turning them off and on.

Are we doing this now? OK, alternate definition:

diatribe
Latin diatriba, from Greek diatribē pastime, discourse, from diatribein to spend (time), wear away, from dia- + tribein: to rub

1. archaic : a prolonged discourse
2. a bitter and abusive speech or writing
3. ironic or satirical criticism

Too mild, IMO. Your posts sounded fairly bitter and denunciatory to me.

Ann, I prefer your dictionary - sometimes a diatribe is prolonged and bitter.

A lot of the people posting in this thread haven't even posted in that other thread. It seems a leap to assume a consensus based on that.
Not without reason...I stopped posting in there because it just got too ugly...and Mari's OP was totally hijacked... why post just to get shot down? I will post where I find it a little friendlier. You may want to read that into the consensus.

Personally I learned the hard way not to try to help someone without them asking for help first...I was 'slapped' in the face when I tried to help a noob improve their looks. Live and let live is a better outlook to take IMHO.

I offered someone who was a day old the newbie information folder and got, "I'm an alt you asshole. I've been here over a year, I think I've got it figured out by now." Direct quote. I still can't believe it. How am I supposed to know he's an alt? He took the folder, though. Maybe he's paging through it with all his oldbie friends and laughing at me. I wish I knew who his main was so I could avoid him.

You can't always tell when someone is new, and help isn't always welcome. Just do what you can when help is needed and try not to intrude if it isn't.

How do I? (^_^) .... I say, "Crud, you look all crazy... Have you seen the freebie malls yet? (^_^)" Or "That's the second ugliest hair I've ever seen. (^_^)"

And worth a whole lot more. That's a beautiful post, Isabeau. It makes me ashamed that I posted earlier with a way to nudge the OP's noob friend in the direction she wants him to go. (Although I still think it's a delightfully sneaky approach. Mwahaha!)

I just noticed your post! I had to go back and read your 'sneaky' approach... very good, lol.
I certainly wouldn't be offended in someone's genuine offer to help, I guess it's the intention behind the sneakiness that counts. I really need to go through all the Mysti tool options. Mimic? Sounds wicked and fun!

I revealed some secrets of men the other day, today I reveal a secret about cats - they get to go places men are not allowed; not suggesting that the maleness of me wasn't known :) (I suspect that I will now never be allowed there again; I'd post the picture, but I'm not evil - great now I need to add - no one was naked, I was not in a girls locker room, I wasn't . . .ack I shouldn't have said anything; ok, I was a cat, as a cat I sat in someone's lap, nothing sexual about it).

Oh, that maleness thing - I just recalled that I was wandering around in my human shape and a dolphin popped up and noted that they thought I was female. In case anyone cares or wondered, I am not female.

The mimic will show up as a different text color than normal. Will not mention who is doing the mimicing, though. And not everyone will know what is going on.

In the past, though, I have been mimiced and it did not show up as a different color. I am not certain what happened there.

...a secret about cats...
One of my best friends is a cat. I like to take SL at face value. But the funny things is that most animals seem neuter. (^_^) Furries can be spotted by their body shape, but most quads would need a pink scarf or bow for me to assume they're female. (^_^)

With most people I meet and places I see in SL, it seems like anyone is welcome anywhere. It actually felt weird seeing gender specific changing rooms at NCI. With some of the shapeshifters I know, I LOL at the idea of which one they choose when they decide to switch for that week/day/hour. (^_^)y

Crud.... Now I'm part of the derail. (T_T) ... (^_^)

Ah... I know... Maybe it's nice to tell people about their noobishness just like reminding someone to deruth. Ask if they really like looking like "that". Really, treat it like a public service in a way. That's the difference between critique and criticism for me. It was rough for me because I was surrounded by so many people afraid to be "rude" about my noobie hair. I didn't get to really start updating my look until my third month. I starting to settle in now though. I even made my own spikes, piercings, and hair. (^_^)y

Just a clarification - they had never meet me before they saw me in human form. I assume they thought I was female from what I wrote in the Forums. Or that helicopter I kept on the roof of the hangout. Or whatever it was that I occasionally ramble about in group IM.

I might have to file that for further use... :D

Most real noobs with wooden appendages, though, didn't take kindly to my reminding them of that thing hanging...er...standing out of their pants.

Just shout " hey [name]... that's not how to use a broomstick doofus!

How to tell someone they look like a noob? In sl you either type it or you speak it in chat by saying you look like a noob.

I actually love when avatars are confident enough to go noob. It's like the SL rocker look or something. A big F U to us primmy snobs.

I Knew this noob avatar of epic proportions that used to follow me around asking for dances. He had the brutal orange noob hair that was styled into a mullet with big sideburns. He had made his face all long and weird looking, and all he ever wore were these kung fu shorts with a red martial arts belt.

love it.

I went through this same thing. I was admittedly shallow at first but after a couple of days of getting to ‘know’ this girl, I all of a sudden thought she was the most beautiful AV in SL.

You can either just tell them, or use and alt and drop the freebie (but goodie) items on them with a notecard telling them how to put them on. When I've been asked, "why are you giving me this? do you think I am ugly?" I tell them, "of course not, but it is your only outfit; I'm just giving you more options".

i see, appeal to their inner virtual individuality

for some reason I have this strange impression that a lot of scripters have newbie avatars on purpose, is this true?
