From: Jethro Stubbs Regardless, it still doesn't make it a diatribe.
Diatribe: a bitter, sharply abusive denunciation, attack, or criticism A bitter, abusive denunciation thunderous verbal attack Are we doing this now? OK, alternate definition: diatribe Latin diatriba, from Greek diatribē pastime, discourse, from diatribein to spend (time), wear away, from dia- + tribein: to rub 1. archaic : a prolonged discourse 2. a bitter and abusive speech or writing 3. ironic or satirical criticism From: someone It was a critque.
Critique: a criticism or critical comment on some problem, subject, etc. A critical review or commentary, especially one dealing with works of art or literature. an essay or article that gives a critical evaluation (as of a book or play) Too mild, IMO. Your posts sounded fairly bitter and denunciatory to me.

As the waves gently roll into the shore a duck pops up and flies around, gently rising and falling on the breeze. A sudden intrusion of the newcomer causes the duck to slip from its graceful flying and fall from the sky and crash into the newcomer. The duck looks up and notes, oddly knowing English: "Oh, sorry about that old chap. Your default clothing and noob skin really startled me and threw off my flying."

From: Libby Russell Okay, but what if you wanted to make out with him? Try not being so shallow and look at what makes up the person. I've met way too many 'dressed to the hilt' folks that are a-holes through and through than I have noobs that were. Try seeing the virtual person, not the AV and how much virtual money they drop on it. Otherwise, go hang out in any one of thousands of clubs...you'll get all the overly muscled skins, stupid looking prim hair, gorillas shouting HOOO! you could ever HOPE to find. Just watch out for the bling.

Put on your MystiTool. When the two of you are in a crowded area, use the Mysti's "Mimic" function to masquerade as one or two of the other avatars. Say stuff like,
"Wow, look at the Noob. I'll bet he doesn't even have a prim dick." "Yeah, and he wouldn't know how to use it if he did." "His Profile says he's eight months old." "OMG, I haven't looked like that since my second day here!"
And so on.
Then say, in your own voice, "Come on, let's get out of here", and go somewhere else.
A day or two later, call him up and say, "I need to pick out some stuff for a friend. Would you come with me and help me shop for him?" Then use him as a clothes dummy to try on demo stuff.
One-two punch.

From: Kallisti Burns I have a pair of mules for backing up copies of my shop stock - but they lasted noobed for the best part of three days each before I started twitching and had to deck them out. First, I thought "mules" like backless shoes. Then I thought "mules" like the kind Mari's neighbor has. For the life of me, it took me a bit to figure out you were talking alts/bots... LOL!

It's everyone's own business how they choose to look. Not everyone is on SL to be the perfect tall thin young pretty barbie and Ken couple (probably things they can't be in RL). Leave them in peace. Maybe they like to spend their SL time with other things than shopping for skins, like building, scripting, being creative. I know many poeple who barely change their clothing. They simply don't care. They pursue other interests.
The thing *I* hate most is when guys tell me "How about putting a human avatar, maybe then we go dancing/kissing/whatever". It's insulting because here I am who I *chose* to be. If you don't like me just go away.

its not so much people who look like noobs are a problem...
Its the people who look like noobs (or worse) that expect you to tell them their avatar is hot/cool/attractive/good looking/well done when it isn't.

From: Jethro Stubbs You get falsey accused of making diatribes No, the diatribe comment was just a slight exaggeration to make a point. What I'm actually accusing you of is not taking responsibility for the skin choice YOU made, and then making it seem as if the skin is somehow at fault. No one forced you to buy it, you chose to transform Jethro into an 'Eastern European Metrosexual.' Similarly, no one is forcing you to continue wearing that skin; if you hate it so much, stop wearing it. That is all.

From: Magdalena Siemens Hi all I think that spending some money on an avatar or on anything in SL is normal. Why? SL is a hobby for most, business for some. On any other hobby you spend money as well, want to know how much money hubby did spend on tropical fish and the necessary equipment - now he starts again, bought a fish tank for the office. I know whats next.....down to the pet shop every week end with the MC in the hand. Compared to that, SL is a cheap hobby. Come on an avatar costs what? 5 USD? 10 USD an expensive one? If you can't afford that it's not your hobby. If you WANT to look standard, because you dont want people to be distracted from YOU with an avatar....fine, I disagree with, but respect that opinion. Just an opinion Maggie QF(maximum freakin')T I fly fish. A decent rod sets you back $250-$350, easy. A reel can run $150-$200 or more. I have about 7 sets right now (I can't remember them all.) Plus lines at $40 each, spare spools, leaders, waders, wading boots, a float tube, hiking gear to get to the water with all your crap, miscellaneous bits and pieces, my pride and joy - a Renzetti tying vice (don't ask how much, it still hurts), geesh. I could have bought a nice car for what I have in fishing gear. Compare that to the ~$100 I've dumped into SL into the last 6 months or so and SL is looking pretty danged cheap. I don't see fixing up Trout as making up for some sort of personal shortcomings. I see it as enjoying a fun pasttime with my friends. I like how he looks, so who cares what other people think. The same is true for people who just don't feel like buying a fancy skin. They're happy with what they have. Everyone enjoys SL in their own way. The money shouldn't be an issue, because who really cares about a dollar or two here and there? It's a matter of getting out of it what you want. I just don't care how people look. In the OP's case, her friends might have to put some more into their looks to get what they want out of SL.

Yes, I wear a modified noob AV. A close resemblance to Legolas.
It is a elf AV. The skin is noob, but tinted, I played with the sliders to get it this way as much as possible.
For guys, there is not many skins out there that would fit such a look. Nor is there prim hair. I had one person try to get me prim hair.. it didn't fit well.
I wear pretty much the same clothes I have worn for over a year.. or is it more now? I just do not care enough to worry about my Avatar's look to go on the un-ending search for what is not out there. I have seen many female avatars and said, wow, that is a nice look. for the guys the normal reaction is "ugg". Some have nice looks, you just don't find them much. And if you are a male elf... forget it.
If you look at my profile pic ( god that was some time ago ) the only real thing that has changed is the green clothes are now a better brown.
I think I became a member in 2005... I think.. I amnot sure.. I can't even remember the begining of this post.

Trap, on the Deviant Kitties sim, recently came out with some male elf skins in a variety of shades. Might be worth looking at.

From: Max Herzog I'm intrigued by this notion of Eastern European metrosexuals. Can't say I've seen anyone remotely approaching this definition in the great capitals of the eastern reaches.
London, Paris, New York (and Stockholm) yes. Krakow? Bratislava? Plovdiv? Snow washed jeans still. Well his parents immigrated from Romania and they settled in New York. Brighten Beach, to be precise. This close proximity to New York City is how his love for fashion and extremely good grooming was developed. In fact it was his love for fashion that lead him to a fashion career that has allowed him to escape Brighten Beach and move to a small apartment in the middle eastside part of Manhattan. Because of his good grooming and fashion sense, he knows that he could never be confused with his blue color dock working cousin who lives and works across the river in New Jersey. Nor can he be compared to his cousin who lives across the Atlantic in London. The one who works as a waiter in the one of those fancy Kensignton restaraunts he can't yet afford. But he really cringes at the thought of being compared to his uncle, the transient worker, who lives in his used Fiat Panda on the side streets of Milan. He does want to be accepted by those that he thinks are the well traveled metrosexuals. The ones he meets in his new position, as assistant to the photo editor. He is getting tired of being discriminated against by the few continental Americans and the Western Europeans that he meets in his industry who view his home town of Constanta as just a low class beach resort or a good location for a photo shoot before spending the weekend in Mykonos. So he works, secretly dreaming of the villas on the private Island in the South Pacific that he will one day rent and how those people in New York, London and Milan that he envies so much, will instead envy him.

From: Libby Russell Yes. Funny thing was, right after I made my original post I went to see my (RL) stylist, and while waiting in the lobby I noticed a copy of Newsweek opened to a story called "Our Imaginary, Hotter Selves: Avatars might serve therapeutic purposes, helping those with social phobia become more confident." It was about a psychological study done in Second Life where people were assigned avatars of different levels of attractiveness, how people reacted to them, and how the players' virtual image reflected on their RL behavior. It's actually a fascinating study. http://www.newsweek.com/id/112825Interesting article, thanks.

Matt's not bad, Soji. Connery is hard to tell because of the lighting - Carnival of Doom, right? Anyway, I think Connery is a little heavier - at least he is now. Looks like you're pretty close on the facial features. Just fatten him up a little and see if that does it.

Whoo! Connery is THIRSTY!
In that pic he looks a lot closer. Sean Connery is going to be a tough one to match. He's more famous for his persona than his looks, I think. Matt Damon has pretty distinctive features, but Connery is sort of generic handsome guy with a beard. It's his presence that makes him who he is. So it's going to be tough to get e recognizable Sean Connery.

I like shopping, to some extent. It's fun. Unless you have a particular item in mind, then it becomes really time consuming and frustrating. I also love to tweak my av and even change it completely. Couple of days ago, I got a tiny wolf avatar. I'm not sure how to express it but, it completely changed how I 'felt' walking around SL. You haven't danced until you've danced as a tiny! Hahaha I can't believe how fun that was.
I won't say how much I spend in here, but I'm sure it's less than many hobbies others have, so I don't feel guilty in the least. It may seem strange to others that I prefer 'dressing' as an elf, drow, tiny or borguette, but it amuses me and that's what's important.
I believe that some people who come here (yes, I said SOME) like to use SL as some kind of dating agency. In that case, I understand how someone else's 'look' may be important to them. If you are looking for that special someone, then I suppose you would want others to help you out with your look. Just don't assume everyone has the same motivation for being in SL.
I've met newby (jeans, white T-shirt, default skin) people who have helped me out with techy stuff, shown me their wonderful creations, made me laugh and think, etc. These are the ones I offer/accept friendship with. Funny, they're also the ones who seem to avoid drama. They don't talk to me about their latest conquests, or failed relationships ad nauseam.
Do what you like with your own av. If people ask for help with their look, by all means, help them. If you are here to 'date', you will attract what you radiate - shallowness, kindness, humorous, sexiness, etc.
My 2 cents

From: Isabeau Imako I like the bag and the hat! Very nice, Soji! Thank-you, I got them free from an Indiana Jones Experience I found in world. While Connery wasn't Indiana Jones, he is Indy's father. From: Trout Recreant Whoo! Connery is THIRSTY!

I should have captioned my picture of Connery-me in the chair: "I expect you to die Mr. Bond!" If, for no other reason than I'm in the chair of death in that picture.
