From: Lowen Raymaker and here I was thinking that caring how other people look in RL was shallow You can't honestly tell me that a person's looks/appearance don't mean anything to you in real life. (Unless you're blind, in which case, how in the hell are you reading these forums?)

(Unless you're blind.) I am pretty sure very few blind people participate in the SL forums. Looks matter, but many people are able to look past that. In SL people can look like they want. But its hard to take those who choose to look like Phil Linden seriously

From: Xanthia Nightfire finally needled him into a new skin just because he couldn't get a beard to look right with the sliders. Ooh- who has male skins with beards? One of my friends in question is trying to emulate his RL looks, so he needs a skin with beard and 'stache.

Sometimes, I put on the standard noob shirt and jeans just so "concerned citizens" will make suggestions. A couple of years ago, I went a whole month using an earlier version of Teeny from late 2003. Its especially fun when they see my born date.

From: Wildefire Walcott You can't honestly tell me that a person's looks/appearance don't mean anything to you in real life.
(Unless you're blind, in which case, how in the hell are you reading these forums?) In RL I have prosopagnosia and aspergers syndrome -- other people's appearance doesn't register at all for me. Most of the time I'm only peripherally aware of my own appearance. I don't think people are shallow if they are concerned with how other people look. But if that's all they judge people on then that does seem quite silly to me. For the OP, I suppose if it really bothers you, you could try and mention it tactfully, but the might not care, or might even prefer the 'noob' look. -Atashi (* aka "face blindness". That's how I found out about SL -- someone told me it was a great place to socialize, because everybody has their name floating over their head so you always know who they are.)

uhm, you look like a noob, we can't have that, someone might think I know you... time for a shopping trip, but first, ::gives lots of old inventory away:: ...see if you want any of that stuff.
problem solved. =)

My RL, the Lagwoot Agency, employed an alt., basically for boring testbot purposes like test selling etc. The dumb testbot kept an unchanged newbie appearance for ages, until they decided to become a silver ball.

I'll never forget the avatar who gave me a pretty dress when I was a n00b - so I think I would give them some clothes and Lucrezia's new residents starter kit.
Of course, you could always ask them if they look like that in RL?

Who cares what an avatar looks like, really, does it matter?
I look the way I do because it's my choice. I haven't spent $100 on outfits and crap by choice too. If someone is that shallow and insecure that they have to spend money changing their virtual selves to make up for shortcomings in their real selves... I'd suggest the money be better spent on a good therapist.

I'm shallow.. I admit it...
I have a pair of mules for backing up copies of my shop stock - but they lasted noobed for the best part of three days each before I started twitching and had to deck them out.
One cost me 3,500 to kit out, the other closer to 7,000...
Either way... best way of telling someone they look like a noob is entirely dependent on the person you're asking...

I just hope that the fall from your high horse isn't a bonebreaker... ...and thanks for summing up user-created content as "crap". As a designer, let me just say "Much appreciated"...

From: Broccoli Curry Who cares what an avatar looks like, really, does it matter? That's be the VAST majority of residents who tinker the appearance of their avatars to look a little different from the defaults... From: Broccoli Curry I look the way I do because it's my choice. I guess I'll just go back to being an psychological wreck making 'CRAP' for like addled-minded residents to buy off me... Be careful not to fall off that high horse there, Broc, honey...

Personally not all of us wants to spend the money on skins, or flexible hair. Personally I bought cheap clown looking skin recently but my policy has been up to now if I can't make it, I don't want to wear it. I don't really care if I look or anyone else looks strange or a like noob. What manners more ti me is what they act like, who they are beyond the pixels and if they are creative its added bonus. P.S. Anyone else notice how prim attachments like hats, hair, bodies. etc always end up doing incredibly annoying things?

Personally, I enjoy splurging wads of L$ on hair, skins, clothes etc, purely for aesthetic pleasure. That's my preference, but by the same token, I don't have an issue with how others wish to appear in SL. I have an issue when people act like utter tosspieces though.

"Hello Mr. White, nice to meet you. You know, you may want to consider upgrading your avatar, clothing, hair and skin. You can find quality free versions of each attribute if you have the time to look. People in SL can tend to take themselves pretty seriously, and if you're into the whole mess, it's a good idea to upgrade your 'look' as soon as possible."
*shrugs*

"Hello Mr. White, mayor of Nubville. You need to go shopping for a new life."

From: Kallisti Burns Anyone who spends any money in SL on clothes, hair or other custom content cares - and to these people; yes it does matter. Kinda amusing how people seem to think it's wrong when people choose not to spend thousands of L$ on their avatar appearance (even though it's not real) yet it's perfectly fine for them to pretend to have sex with animals (because it's not real). *shrugs* I'd certainly much rather have "looking like a noob" permitted than beastiality in SL.

Yes, because all SL appearance fascists are closet bestiality fans, quite obviously.

If you think it's wrong to look like a noob, you will be of the view that horsehumping can take place in your back yard and you wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

A lot of the people posting in this thread haven't even posted in that other thread. It seems a leap to assume a consensus based on that.
