If you could AR the ugly it would devastate anyone's ability to freely create.

I'm aware of zoned sims that actually specified that "builds must be of above average quality". That by definition excludes the majority of people on the grid, especially since according to Wikipedia, "the average player is below average".

No reason to stop ARing them, finally some people power, if 16m owners want to have ads they better be nice about it

It's the Valentines day Ad Farmer Massacre

TPing to every yellow dot on the map for around 5 sims radius around home, I've AR'd about 20 different names, highest I found so far is $24k for a 16m, most were about $9k
Found some are in group names witn no objects but for sale at extortion prices, but guess can't do anything about them, as you can't seem to AR a group anyway.

I'm glad to see some progress about adfarmers. I just hope this doesn't get used on regular people who like eccentric builds. Please no SL Home Owner Associations!

I cant wait to get on and do a search for all his land just so I can hop around and file AR's! There is on near my store where he flat out said he wouldnt accept anything less than 6000l for a 16m square. I hope he looses a ton of money with this!

i disagree. I think it will be very tough on LL at first, keeping up with it all, but subsequently it will settled down to a place where the residents know generally what they can and cannot get away with.

Mr. root vegetable's land near my skybox in Disl has also been abandoned back to Gov. Linden. Guess he figured if he couldn't get $2,500 or so for each 16 sq.m. parcel, he'd just abandon them. Of course I would have bought them for a REASONABLE price - but this guy is not reasonable. Good riddance, at any rate.

Rioko, this just adds a step to your AR process.

1. Contact the land owner and offer to buy.
2. Get their price.
3. We'll assume that it's extortionate. Create an AR and send the chat log as evidence.

I doubt that many of the 'advertising networks' will be financially stable without the extra profit from selling the land at extortionist prices. Now they have to rely solely on suckering businesses into paying ad fees for their income. Businesses may be reluctant to do this knowing that LL is taking action against adfarms. So sit tight - ideally, if LL goes through with enforcing this, eventually the rest of them will dry up and go away.

Edit: I've had a look around, and it appears that many of the 'legit' ad networks have taken their parcels off the market entirely. Give it time, and remember that you can always AR them for obscenity if they are displayed porn within eyeshot of a PG sim (eyeshot is a pretty long way if you disable camera constraints.)

the 'advertising' language worries me. i wonder if this will apply to simple rotating, particle emitting 'for sale' signs...

You act like this is a disaster, and linden interference like government interference is heavy handed, however in this case like so many that have gone before, the issue spun way out of control before anything but the heavy handed approach was useless. I for one will be doing a happy dance on any land that used to have a Black spinning cube with an ugly happy face on it.

If it's encroaching off of the border on to your land... then it's harrassment.

Simple 'for sale' cubes probably not - unless the land is at an extortionate price, because surely a 'for sale' cube counts as advertising?

But what happens if the farmer argues that, "we can charge L$50/week for ads in that spot, and there are 12 ads, so it's fair to charge L$2400 for the land since we'll lose far more than that by selling it?"

That would be a concern for a legitimate advertising business too, of course.

I guess the best way then is to AR it anyway if it is beyond what people would consider 'acceptable' and let Linden Lab make the decision.

Being responsible about what we turn in is going to be a good test for the future of the Age Verified policing.

Honestly, I don't want stuff next to my house that is there only to cram advertising into my eyeballs. I want a nice area that actually looks like something, if it's residential I want other houses, other people. If it's commercial, I want other businesses.

So yes, if you stuck that next to my land, I would be very irritated by it. I'd stick a big screen there, which is itself irritating. Or I'd move to a skybox. (Well in reality, I won't buy on the mainland period.)

And honestly, I don't know why someone paying $10-25 dollars for a small 512-4096 plot should have their space ruined by someone who's paying 10 or 20 cents for a microplot.

And really, what is the point of this advertising? Does anyone ever look at these things and buy something? Or is this just some kind of web advertising "impression" scam? Because if that popped up next to my plot, commercial or residential, I'd swear on a stack of Bibles to never do business with the person ever ever ever.

Will this get rid of the problem? Probably not.

Will it reduce it? Probably.

It is encouraging that this is yet another example of how LL is listening to the cires ot its residents? Yes, most definitely.

At the worst, the extortionists will find some new way to do what they do, and we will be after them. Until then, some major eyesores and harassment is gone from SL.
