It's a good start!

Rather that futz about trying to determine ourselves exactly what constitutes a violation, think instead in terms of what you, as a reasonable person, would decide yourself upon viewing such a parcel or group of parcels.

Does it look half-way legitimate? Then it can stay. Is it an affront to anyone nearby? Then get rid of it.

I say, give the Lindens the benefit of the doubt in being able to make simple, common-sense determinations, too.

If you try to hamstring them into a set of specific regulations, they will end up doing nothing.

This way, they might do too little (they have a tendency to err on the lenient side when it comes to griefers of any persuasion), but it's still a lot better than the doing nothing they've done to date.

I will be happy with ANY improvement; I won't be expecting perfection.

(And I think they are doing it because of their new sims on auction that got so blatantly, in-your-face-screw-you messed up.)

What *I* think is an unreasonable price is irrelevant to the application of the policy.

Yep! Same goes with what I think.

Still, I wonder what people think is a good level to start ARing at..

Ah ok. That is a key question. I'll refrain from answering your question. I don't want to give the local ad farmers any tips. ;)

Well, the adfarmers are certainly scurrying around tonight. Got a couple prims returned to me from ad parcels that had been set without autoreturn at least 6 months ago (little phantom transparent things just to keep the parcels from filling with griefer prims). And I see some parcels have been taken off the market.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the policy not enforced for a few days.

That allows time for people to clean up their own act.

And it means that you won't have to clean up after everyone that picks up after themselves, also.

A win-win.

I'm curious to see who will clean up their act voluntarily, too.

Come on guys, stop criticizing this as a failure already. This is HUGE! It may not be perfect but the Lindens are finally listening and they sure as hell are sending a message to the ad farmers. We know some of these slimy lizards are going to try and work around the system some how, but I'm positive we're going to see a helluva improvement. Do you think it'd be spamming if we all IM Um**k H*x and go "nah nah".

*Does a happy dance! :D

I'm sure the ad farmer types will come up with a new business model to annoy and exhtort but this is still a wonderful step in the right direction. I think i'll celebrate LL's valentine's present with an oh-so-sweet ARfest.

one week of listening is not a trend. One affirmative acknowledgement of an actual community-generated complaint is not "LL really does listen". Every once in a while, President Bush says something that most americans agree with. (the recent comments on the noose displays).. but that doesn't absolve him of his criminal actions in office over the years.

Niether will one "yes we hear you" from Linden Labs, absolve them of years of NOT listening, and over/under/mis reacting to real or imagined problems.

I'm glad of Linden Lab's initial (and LONG overdue) moves on this issue, but I have seen them do this sort of thing before. Application is 90% of the job, and LL has a rather poor record when it comes to fair and consistent enforcement of policies.. mostly due to it's love for "onesided" report-investigate-react process which NEVER EVER asks the reported THEIR side of the story.

Yes, it's an encouraging step, but it's only one step. LL has miles to go before I will beleive they've changed their ways.

For the record.. I WANT to beleive. But until I see more of this sort of thing from Linden Labs, I can't give them the benefit of the doubt. Not yet (crosses fingers)

Winter - get your ARs in now whilst the iron is hot ...

I suspect there will be swampage the like of which they've never seen. Also, bear this in mind people - your own ARs might notget done as fast as you like!

W00t! Best news all week!

I'm glad to see the Lindens move forward on this - while it may not be the silver bullet to the problem, it is, IMHO, better than the status quo.

Timing's perfect, too - I've been seriously considering going premium and buying me a little slice of mainland... :D

Still won't stop the lady who has 3 rotating cubes on a 16 sq m for escort services. Ads in general just suck, but at least U***k H*x won't be able to continue how he was.

I'm right there with you, Cherry. I'm worried about how much I'll be neglecting my business having so much fun with this.

No it wont, but those are next on my list to begin sqawking to LL about. Not sure the solution though, since I don't want to regulate taste, but there must be something.

In the meantime, join the celebration!

If no new worker-hours are allocated to processing ad based harassment abuse reports, there will have to be a reduction in time spent processing other abuse reports.

This is going to be a really entertaining weekend, playing 'hunt the adfarm' and filing loads of AR's.

The two parcels of advertising near my land are, sadly, not for sale *at this time* but this has to hit their business model hard and maybe, just maybe, we are going to finally see the salvation of the mainland.

Thankyou Linden Lab.

This is FANTASTIC news! I for one give kudos to the lindens.. hopefully for a lot of those that blight peoples views to extort huge sums for the small plots the fact that they know people can AR will be enough to stop them in their tracks. I hope somehow this becomes more widely known though as the blog is not read by every resident..maybe not even half?

I have to say and this may make me unpopular but I agree that they should not stop advertising completely..if done right it could work really well and also if they did stop it then its taking away some of the relative freedom of choice we all enjoy in Second Life.

Well done to those that have spoken up! YAY!!

Good start. I wonder how high the price has to be to constitute extortion? It will probably fluctuate with the land market. Whatever that price per meter turns out to be, the farmers will just set their parcels for .1 per meter under it.

Still, it's great that they are doing something. Kudos, Jack et al. :)

Some will resort to hiding the fact that they will sell at an increased rate in the land description, or in their profiles, stating to "contact them if you are interested in the plot"

And when they eventually inform you of the asking price, you copy their communication into the AR.
It shouldn't matter if the price is set on the land or specified via another channel.

Hint: If dealing with such an individual, disable Voice

The Blog posting is a good start.
The process should result in a significant amount of cleaning

Be sure that the ad farmers will look for ways to get around the wording of the blog. I would expect them to test the limits. Don't make the mistake of thinking that they are all morons. Think of U.M. entrapping the bots with his ransom doughnut 512s in order to dump the unwanted sections of the 4096s he had to buy. That's clever.

Hmm I contact adfarmers all the time, "give you $200 for it mate, it's worth bugger all as it's surrounded by adfarms"

When you see one you think is an adfarm, AR it, LL will sort out if it's bad or not.

I am very glad that LL are finally showing signs of doing the right thing and listening to customers. Now let's hope for the execution to be as good as the intention...

I'm alao as glad that they didn't go down the route of restricting parcel size or muting. Muting (whilst probably a useful additional feature particularly just for your own land) won't help with what newbies see (it'll still all look like cr@p), or people who want to explore and have to rez all the ad-cr@p in their viewers before they can go around for a few minutes muting it all. Disbelief unsuspended !

I am hoping that a certain egregious extortionist orthodox Russian Jew, currently residing in Germany is rethinking his actions. The ARs on that guy are going to cause the whole mainland to crash... ;)

In a Riback thread, I posted:

From: Sling Trebuchet

A little story:

One watery Corsican sim has just had an ad plot created by someone who has a lot of land and a club/marina build in that sim.
She's selling of a big chunk of land that wasn't earning as she might have wished.
However, being a twisted sort of individual, she appears to be griefing another person by cutting a 128 ad plot beside them. I can't think of any other reason in the circumstances.
It's really insane. She must be blinded by hate for that person as she had to cut another plot in the row in a strange way to balance the 128 cut. The upshot of that strange cut will probably be a 384m plot being cut loose by someone who wants to optimise tier levels.
That ad plot is devaluing the land that she is trying to sell at high prices. Cutting off your nose to spite your face it seems.

This is the same headcase who banned and muted me for asking her to move her prims out of my land. I think the only reason she didn't cut a little ad plot beside me rather than an expensive 512 is that my place is too close to her remaining land.

Explicitly banning a neighbour simply to grief them with red ban lines up to infinity is one thing, but dropping an ad farm beside them is breathtaking!!
She's probably self-destructive in RL to.

There is KARMA!! :)

The witch has devalued the land she wants to sell by cutting that ad plot.
Now the ad plot won't be able to inflict the griefing she wanted to inflict on the neighbour.
16m of that ad plot has already been sold to someone who collects 16s for other than advertising/extortion, so she's stuck with the cut - unless the buyer takes pity on her.

That is unbelievably wondrous.
Made my day ;)

150 replies, blog post closed.

I only counted about 3 people against this move, and one of those was coming out with the old "freedom of speech" rubbish that we can ignore.

I am going to enjoy the new look, ad-free mainland, when it comes. There's gonna be one hell of a backlog to clear up with AR's this weekend.

I'm still waiting for someone to actually admit buying anything from a spinning cube ad anyway.
