Two people are standing on a streetcorner in December. A guy in a Santa Claus suit pulls his car up to the curb, gets out and hands the female $1,000 because she is crying that she can't have a fur coat. The guy feels slighted, because although he is bearing up stoically, he is unhappy that he can't afford a $50 train set for his two sons, but really, he's no worse off than before the car pulled up.

Why not show up and PARTICIPATE? These are open to anyone: they are ABOUT discussion.

But, gosh, it is more fun to "crash" a seminar and effectively silence the voices there.

Pep, how many different ways does one need to say that domestic abuse is NOT just a woman's issue? Did you not note that the 16 days is NOT called "Activism Against Violence against Women," but rather "Activism Against GENDER Violence"??

MY personal guess on the reason for this is two-fold --- 1) most men that are beating their wives do not want to kill her (maybe cuz then she won't be around for him to beat up) --- 2) if husbands abusing their wives were handling a bit more effectively by the legal system, the wife might not feel like killing the guy is her only real choice.

Well, as you have conveniently avoided quoting the part of my post in which I most directly address the issue you raise, I will paraphrase.

The "16 Days of Activism" is EXPLICITLY not just about violence against women. It is about ALL forms of gender violence. Period.

Most feminists whose introduction to feminist principles didn't begin and end with a screening of "Thelma and Louise" are opposed to ALL forms of violence, regardless of the identities of perpetrator and victim. It's one of the reasons that I, along with many other Canadian feminists, query Canadian participation in Afghanistan: I'm tired of seeing Canadian men being brought home in body bags.

Feminism has come an awfully long way since the 70s. It has branched out to embrace issues of race and sexuality, and it has, for some time now, been addressing a more holistic view of gender relations that also encompasses violence against men. In fact, feminism is increasingly about HUMAN rights, not just women's rights, precisely because we have come to see that the issues that preoccupy us have much broader implications and scope than we once imagined.

As for a Day against Violence against Men: I'd be personally fully in support of such an event, as I am fully in support of any action that takes on our culture of violence. Why don't you start one? I promise you I'll be there. I'll even make up event T-shirts for you.
